Simple question. When a pair of games come out (for example: Red & Blue, Black & White, Tartan & Burburry), do you only buy one version and that's that, do you buy both versions, or do you buy one at (or near) launch, then the other one at a later date?

In my house, when a pair is announced, me and my older brother discuss the version exclusives etc, and we choose the version we like the most (so if I prefer the exclusives from White more, I get that one while he gets Black, but if he prefers the exclusives from Blue, I get Red), then I buy the other version for myself at a later date (except recently, when I've been buying both versions on launch day).

I only did that with HGSS and only ended up beating one....maybe I will end up digging out my HG in the future....

I have never bought two versions. It's more fun to have to trade for the exclusives with other people. Buying both defeats the purpose of having version exclusives, plus it's more expensive to buy another game with basically the same story. That's why I only buy one.

The only time I've gotten both versions was in Gen III. I bought Ruby and then got Sapphire as a birthday present later that year.

So my history so far:

Gen I - Blue and Yellow
Gen II - Silver and Crystal
Gen III - Ruby and Sapphire
Gen IV - Platinum (I completely missed D&P)
Gen V - Black

I always buy the game that I personally prefer as it's released, in the case of Gen V for example, I bought White.
A few weeks later, as the initial euphoria of the "new game feeling" has died down a bit, I usually end up with the other copy.
Whether it be a gift from a family member or bought on my own accord, I always end up getting the second copy!

I usually buy just one. A friend of mine has always waited until a third version of the games came out so that it includes most of the version exclusives together. Unusual fellow - my friend has Yellow, Crystal, Emerald, Platinum. Still waiting in hopes for a third Gen 5 game XD.

When my brother and I were younger, we always got the games in pairs. After R/S, we both stopped playing for a while, and I had to buy any new games with my own money (his last game was Ruby). Once I had my own job and regained an interest in Pokemon, I started buying them regularly again -- since I bought a second DS on eBay last year, I've been buying one at release and the other once I get tired of the first/want to finish my Pokedex/I'm bored. To date, the only games I don't have are Gold, Emerald, and Diamond. I'm headed out to buy Black version once I finish this post.

It doesn't defeat the purpose when you only have 1 DS. :p
I usually get one significantly after the release date and then feel compelled to buy all in a generation after awhile just because I'm like that. With BW, however, I bought both on Launch day. It really doesn't benfit you though when you have one DS. I still don't have a Vullaby in White.

I buy one, and then buy the third version of the game. I think it's more sensible, money-wise.

I buy one, then normally get the second version later on, normally as a gift.

I always buy both, then the third whenever it comes out. I usually only play one of them though. So yeah...I'm practically wasting my money, but I don't mind.

I buy both. I'll play one to begin with, then play the other one a few months later when I feel like going through the main story again without having to restart.

I've never bought both versions in a pair. In fact, I've never even played the other versions. I've never started up Red, Gold, Ruby, Pearl, or Black. I see no reason to get those games since the whole point of having version exclusives is to give you a reason to interact with other people who have the games.

I get one version, brother gets the other.
We decide together in advance which of us gets which version.

I always get one, my sister gets the other, and I always get the third version too. So Blue/Yellow, Gold/Crystal, Sapphire/Emerald, Pearl/Platinum and White!

I normally only buy one version and my brother gets the other one and then I buy the third version. There is one generation in which this is different which is in generation I when I got Red version first and my brother got Yellow version and at a much later time I got Blue version and I'm hoping to buy my own Yellow version soon.
