Neither way in the poll.

Blue over Red because:
Blue is my favorite colour.

Gold over Silver because:
No clue how I chose.

Pearl over Diamond because:
More people have Diamond so it will be easier to get it's exclusives/it will be harder for people to get the exclusives I can get, meaning I can get better Pokemon. But the biggest reason is probaly because Pearl is my birth stone.

this is a weird poll because I choose my games by the gameplay and stuff like that...

I chose Yellow because it was the most recent one when I joined the fandom. I chose Silver because Gold is too intimidating to me. I chose Ruby because it's my birthstone, and I chose Fire Red for version exclusives because my reformed first gen team required Growlithe/Arcanine. Finally, I chose Pearl because once again, Diamond was too intimidating to me.

I sorta do, for G/S I choose silver first (got both eventually) because it was like my
5-7th birthday and my parents got me a limited edition pikachu/pichu game boy color and silver version. for R/S, that time I did choose by version mascot and choose ruby because for some reason I prefer bipedual legenaries, but got saphire later anyway. For D/P, however, that was different. I let my sister choose first which version she wanted, but when looking at box art we only found diamond cover, so she went with diamond and I got stuck with pearl-though I'm not complaining, Palkia rules!

I certainly don't seeing that I never really use legendaries. Once I catch them, they just end up in the box.

However, I do choose a certain version based on what version exclusives are in it. I've noticed that certain version spanning the generations have several things in common.

Red, Gold, Ruby and Diamond are pretty similar to each other (I refer to them as the hot colours) while Blue, Silver, Sapphire and Pearl are also similar to each other (I refer to them as cool colours)

I've noticed that the hot colour versions are more popular then the cool version counterparts of their respective generations.

I usually choose the cool colour generation since there are also more people with the other version to trade with (However, I did make that mistake with Gold, which contributed to my disfavour of the GS generation as a whole)

I chose Blue because I prefered blue to red color wise :p Though, after playing the game, Squirtle did become my favorite starter.

GSC though, yes. Thought Lugia looked cooler than Ho-oh. Though, I kinda wanted Ho-oh too, because he had always mistified me since Pokemon started in the US with it's EARLY anime appearance. I was asking myself "LOL OH CRAP WHERE DO I FIND THIS POKEMON IN BLUE!??!" until G/S/C stuff started coming around...

R/S/E... went with Sapphire for same reason as R/B. Then I bought Emerald for the extras...

Diamond and Pearl... bought Pearl because EVERYONE I knew had Diamond already, including my younger brother.

I never owned any Gen.1 games, but I borrowed Red and Yellow from a friend and played another friend's Blue. Yellow's easliy my favorite, but battling Brock was HARD (no pun intended) in that game.

So: Blue=Red<Yellow (I live in the U.S, so I never played Japanese Green or Red)

Of course, I choose Crsytal over Gold and Silver, because I've only borrowed Gold and never even laid eyes on a Silver version, but Crsytal was my first game.

So: Gold>Silver<Crsytal

My first Gen.3 game was Saphire, but then I recieved Ruby and started to reject Saphire. I've had three Emeralds, the first one ended up half way across the country (Long story) the second one I plain lost somehow, and the third one I gave to my friend's little brother who likes pokemon because he had a game boy advanced but no games to play on it with. I like Emerald, but the battle frontier could have been easier then it was.

Fire Red and Leaf Green where okay, but since I started playing
in the second gen, the nostagia wasn't there for me.

So: Ruby=Saphire=Emerald

Fire Red=Leaf Green

Finaly, I like Diamond and Pearl both the same, but I've grown attached to my Pearl because I lost my Diamond somewhere. I got Diamond first, and Pearl after I lost Diamond. (I was about to take on the elite four with a really awsome team too)

Diamond=Pearl

I have a personal tradition of always choosing the "blue" version. Which is to say the second game in the set.

I don't really care. I'll end up playing it anyways and i'll end up having the version exclusive Pokemon of the other game.

I'll say exclusives, back when Red and Blue were new out, I got Blue because a friend had told me it was the only one that had Magmar. Funny though, I rarely even used Magmar when I got it. I always preffered Charizard.
Couldn't really say I choose by mascot, Charizard has always been my all time favourite pokemon, If I had chosen by mascot it would have been Red. Although probably if I didn't know about what was exclusive would have taken Red because of the mascot.

Since I always end up getting all the games in every generation it really doesn't matter in the long run, but I always end up getting the "blue" version first (Blue, Silver, Sapphire, Diamond).

I bought Diamond because I couldn't see Pearl and didn't bother looking...

I normally go by exclusives(FireRed for Elekid, Ruby for Shiftry) I got my original red version because red is my favorite color, I got yellow for the extra's(all 3 starters, surfing pikachu etc.. plus I was always restarting on red anyways.) and I got silver because of Lugia. I didn't really care much between diamond and pearl because I was gonna just end up using my FR team anyways so I just got diamond because it was the first one I saw.

Red because it was the only one left. Silver for Donphan. Sapphire for Ludicolo and Seviper. FireRed for Electabuzz. Diamond for Skutank and Rampardos.

Version exclusives, on the grounds that some of them might have my fave Pokemon.

By mascot, I guess. I don't really care about version exclusives. Besides, I usually get both games anyway.
