Do you consider Charizard and Squirtle to still belong to Ash?

While we know Ash can call them at any time, do you still consider them his Pokemon?

I remember when Ash returned home from Hoenn and showed all his older Pokemon to May/Max, Ash said something like, "All my older Pokemon are here." and then May says, "Don't forget about Charizard and Squirtle too." Even though she never saw them at that point, I imagine Ash told her about them off-screen.

I think the problem was when Charizard and Squirtle originally left, we had no idea if Ash would ever see them again. We had no clue if they would wind up like Pidgeot and Butterfree or if Ash would call them back at some point. However once Ash did call them back during the end of Johto and again in various points of AG, it became apparent he still owned them.

I think the writers knew people were pissed that Ash never went back for Pidgeot and/or Primeape, so they didn't want to make the same mistake with Charizard and Squirtle, especially given how popular Ash's Kanto team was back in the day.

So do you see no difference between the Pokemon at Oak's lab and where Charizard and Squirtle are?

Considering how often they come back, I'd say they still belong to him. He's just letting them stay elsewhere because he knows they can get better training there than they could with him, and that's pretty darn noble of him.

I consider both Charizard and Squirtle still belong to Ash. It's just that they both somewhere else insead of being with Ash or Prof. Oak.

The funny thing was at first when they left during Johto I thought they were gone for good, but both Charizard and Squirtle seem to show up and help out Ash often enough on special occasions that they still belong to him

I Think they still belong to ash, he hasnt released them so they are still his pokemon. And as someone else said he calls on them enough to seem that they still belong to him.

Wait, there are people who don't?

You'd be surprised what I see people say on other Pokemon forums. The only reason we don't see it here is because Bulbagarden tends to have more hardcore fans of the show than other places.

I'd say Charizard still does because of where it is, a place for charizard who belong to trainers train, but because squirtle went off with the squirtle squad (didn't it?) it does not belong to Ash technically anymore, it could probably help him occationally if it were found by Ash.

But Squirtle still hasn't actually been released.. It has gone to fight fires for a living. Ash never released it like he did with pidgeot or butterfree, so it still belongs to him.

I think Charizard still belongs to Ash, definitely, since it's just supposedly "in training." Squirtle is a different story, as it isn't really for Ash's use anymore. But Ash and Squirtle are still friends... so I think it's up for Squirtle to decide if it belongs to Ash or not =)

I was pissed we never saw Butterfree again. :( But yes, I still consider Squirtle and Charizard Ash's Pokemon.

I was upset too about not seeing butterfree again, but I think the reason was is that in real life after butterflies mate, the females lay eggs and they both die soon after and pokemon being a kids show, they never wanted to show this and upset anyone

Hoping one day Ash will go back for charizard again and use it as I lovec charizard. Hopefully if there is a Battle Frontier in anime before the end of Sinnoh arc.

I think Charizard and Squirtle are still Ash's Pokemon. I mean, Charizard's in training and Squirtle is helping its friends in the Squirtle Squad, but whenever Ash needs them they come back and help out. None of his released Pokemon ever came back except for these too. I know it's because they're popular, but within the story it means they're different than Ash's other released Pokemon - they weren't actually released at all.

I imagine Jenny and especially Liza, are like daycare owners in the video games. Even as Charizard left, Ash told him to stay there to get stronger, and Liza stated that as her purpose as well, so yeah. They're still technically Ash's though.

In short: charizard yes, Squirtle no.

Even back when charizard's goodbye episode actually happened, I had a feeling that it would probably come back again, since it seemed clear to me that Ash was leaving it there to train and get stronger. It was sort of like the anime version of a breeding center. Plus, even before that episode aired we all knew about Charizard's cameo in the 3rd movie.

Squirtle's goodbye struck me as totally different. Ash let it leave the group to pursue a goal unrelated to battling or training in the normal sense (it wanted to help its friends). I didn't really see it as any different than Ash letting Butterfree go so it could mate, or letting Pidgeot go so it could protect its own kind. I always assumed that Squirtle was "released" when that episode occured, or at least transferred to Officer Jenny.

I guess my main point is that, when those goodbye episodes occured, I always suspected that Charizard might return, but I *never* suspected Squirtle to come back.

Edit: ><, why do my posts always seem to be either the last post on a page or the first on a new page?

Yeah, we knew about Charizard in the 3rd movie, but there was really no guarantee we'd see it used in battle again. After all, this is the same show where Ash promised Pidgeot he'd come back to it after the Orange Islands, and it never happened. Ash leaving Charizard there to get stronger and never going back for it would be pretty much the same thing, but thankfully the writers weren't as idiotic to do the same thing.

I also imagine the reason Squirtle did come back is because let's face it, you don't bring back Bulbasaur and Charizard and then leave out Squirtle. They're called the "original team" for a reason, excluding Squirtle, his first water Pokemon and part of his original team, would have been a horrible thing for the writers to do.

Its funny, Squirtle never did get as much glorification as Bulbasaur and Charizard did, but the writers did make sure to give it its moments. I actually liked Squirtle the most of Ash's original Kanto starters, so I'm happy it got to come back during the Johto league and to battle Brandon.

Hopefully for the Elite 4 arc or whatever after Sinnoh, the original Kanto team is reunited once more but this time Squirtle gets to have most of the glory.

So do you see no difference between the Pokemon at Oak's lab and where Charizard and Squirtle are?

Yes, I see it in game terms. Professor Oak's is the PC. What you put in there is yours. But if you give them to some stranger you just met (like Liza or whoever), than they're not technically yours - no matter what the chick says. I mean, if Charizard and Squirtle still belong to Ash, than Cacnea still belongs to James, Onix and Geodude and Zubat still belong to Brock - etc. etc. The only reason we even get implications otherwise is because they were popular.

To me, its just like they're Oak'd.

Its funny that we see Charizard and Squirtle more than most of Ash's old Pokemon, and here we are wondering if they're really his.

They still belong to Ash, aslong as they are willing to help him in battle when he needs them, they are still technically part of his reserve team.

But the annoying thing about all this is, specially with Charizard, Ash doesn't play any part in them getting stronger and that just seems unfair. While Ash trained Sceptile to become the powerhouse we know, he didn't really do any work to help Charizard become the powerhouse he is. He just let others do the job for him. D=
