Just curious, since in D/P we've entered our third round of Pokemon Contests (although with different characters).

Do you enjoy the Contest/Grand Festival episodes in the anime? This is counting all of them combined from Hoenn, Kanto and what little of them we've seen in Shinou so far.

Do you like them or would you prefer the Johto approach with just Gyms every 15 episodes, the female companion doing nothing (or perhaps a different goal?), and Contests done away with?

Do you think Contests were a good addition to the anime or not?

Much much much much much more exciting then in the games.

They gave us great characters, great plots, and usually great animation.

I mean, I see some hate simply because May is in them, but I certainly felt it really helped make the season better.

I like them much more than the gyms, that's for sure. We get lots of interesting characters and the appeals are pretty fun to watch, although they're usually more miss than hit. :/

Also, it's annoying how deus ex machinas and contests seem to be lovers at times. I'm lookng at you, Squirtle.

Agreed with what Habunake said.

However, I don't really see what's so different about contests, especially in the Kanto contests when Pokemon were getting knocked out left and right. It seems like it's just battling with a time limit with some attack show offs in the beginning.

And while the rivals are interesting, the commentary is far from it. I'm getting to the point that hearing "remarkable" makes me cringe.

The biggest pro is the music. The dub usually keeps the music mostly in tact and the E4 theme is used commonly which is my favorite piece of AG.

I hope the Gyms in DP take a cue from Contests (which, it looks like they may, since Hyouta seems too possibly have some nice CD)

Contests are kewl. Definitely more interesting than gyms. I like the way each one is a mini-tournament. And the "remarkable" guy is awesome, back off. :p

The one where Scott imitaded that was frigging hillarious.

I started enjoying them in the Battle Frontier more than Hoenn and most of the time the characters introduced by the contest arcs are more interesting than Ash's rivals, except of course Gary and Shinji.

Kasumi speaks so much truth in this post it kicked everyone's asses twice before it was posted.

Contests are okay. It's pretty to see the attacks and how they can be displayed. Plus Lilian's "heaa weee gooo!" pwns and so does "ahhh, suki desu neeee."

Harley > Gary AND Shinji.
Harley may be cool and gay but nothing beats Shinji

...and Masamune.

Right?

He was cool...and hot!

I personally liked almost all May's contests, but I can't say the same about DP contests. No more May, Drew and Harley. Hikari is still utter crap for me and so is her rival. The only thing I liked in first DP contest were
Ash and Aipom. But since there's no chance for them to enter contests again, I will definately be disapointed with DP contests.
But it's still better to have contests than just random fillers between gyms. I only hope there will be more plot with Team Galactic in DP, Because that make DP more enjoyable for me.

I find the contests in the anime enjoyable. :3 The rival dynamics, the plot, the appeals - all enjoyable. However, I think they should extend them a bit more to avoid some pretty redundant fillers while replacing that little margin with something worthwhile to watch.

I could care less now that I can't watch the show.
I blame the evil cable companies for overcharging.
But when I could watch the contests, they were mildly interesting, but too formulaic. SNOOZEFEST.

Icorporating some game rules might make it interesting....

Eh, if you're talking about the Contests in R/S, all they had was Pokemon firing off attacks to impress the judges. That's basically what the appeals in the anime are, they're the same thing only more creative.

If you're talking about the D/P Contests...I think seeing the dancing in the anime would have been amusing. Maybe not in every Contest, but here and there would be fun.

It's fairly disappointing that the anime didn't include more of the aspects from the D/P Contests, Hikari wearing pretty dresses is about the only thing they really took from D/P.

As for Hikari's arc, Nozomi at the moment isn't anywhere near as interesting as Drew was, but we've only seen her for two eps so far so that will likely change. Nozomi/Hikari is going to be fun if we go by the hints they scattered around in their first Contest together...
