Do you? I'm rewatching Kanto and Johto for the sheer epic moments of the two sagas, which were awesome, and I can't help but miss Ash and Gary's rivalry.

Paul was an excellent rival, as far as pushing Ash. But Gary is straight up nostalgia. I love how cool and chill Gary was, and cocky, but how he changed.

TBH, I didn't find Ash vs Gary in the Johto League all that great, except for the fact that Ash finally beat Gary.

But Ash and Gary definitely could've lasted til the end of AG, IMO.

Does anybody miss Ash and Gary's rivalry. Not, is Gary better than Paul, but do you miss the rivalry between him and Ash.

yup, but only because Gary is motherf***ing hot >:D
oh ya, i said it xP you could hear the boy sizzle from the next region! xD
their rivalry was just an excuse to give him some fanserving screen time :p
at least, it was for me haha

(but on a more serious note, yes, i do. it was the kind of cliche rival that i loved if only because he was the 1st.)

No, because it reached a nice conclusion, and after Ash beat Gary there was no place for it to go really.

I would agree, but sometimes I still wish had that kind of motivation.

Because, I always enjoyed watching Ash pushing his eager self ahead consistently because Gary would always beat him to different towns. It put a first, more than now, personal rivalry. Not to mention they were from the same town, and Gary would just tease Ash for fun.

Now, the closest thing we have is Ash's rivalry with Paul, which is just serious, because they have different views of Pokemon. It was based on one topic, how they treated Pokemon, and that sparked the rivalry. Sure, we also have his rivalry with Barry, which is also more lighthearted, but it doesn't come close to how strong the Gary rivalry was.

I would say that just with that one rivalry throughout more than the 2nd series (GS) would have eventually gotten old. But it was definitely the most fun to watch IMO.

Occaisonally, when Ash is not with a rival ATM, I miss it. But like Hellwarden said, it came to a nice conclusion.

Well, it's different from the other rivalries, I'll say that. Gary never really presented a direct threat at first, he was more about the talk, putting Ash down, but with the fact he was always one step ahead of Ash, you could still believe he was more skilled. Then, he gets disqualified in the league while Ash remains. Later, their rivalry wasn't featured as much anymore, but Gary is shown to be a much bigger threat, his skills as a trainer much more apparent. This all builds up to what many remember as the most epic battle the anime has known: Ash vs. Gary for the final time. I don't remember much of the battle being noteworthy myself save for the battle of the starters. It was pretty good rivalry, and I am satisfied how it turned out. Gary would eventually return to smack Ash out of his complacency, and in my opinion, show that he has matured more than Ash has in all that time. True, the anime would make an excuse that Ash is favorable, but I will still believe Gary has more sense. Do I want them to be rivals again? Not really. Paul has proven to be an even greater threat that Gary himself once was, and Ash is evidently going to face another strong trainer in BW. I will admit, Gary is still strong, but he is happy where he is, and I think he knows Ash can get stronger without him. All reason they had to face each other went away at the end of the Johto league, and I think we should leave it at that.

I do miss it, it was one of the reasons why I gave up on the Pokémon Animé.

I do sometimes, but just for the nostalgia. I think it came to a good ending as others have said.

Like most things on the show, it ran it course. If it continued past Johto it would have been a disaster.

What's with all these nostalgic topics lately? If you miss anything from the older seasons, simply rewatch them. Instead of wondering why its not here right now.

No.

It lasted a while, and it ended. I'm fine with them not being rivals anymore, so I don't miss their rivalry. It I want to see it, I know where to look.

Na I don't miss it, I like Paul's rivalry with Ash ten times more.
Gary rarley came into the show and all he did was pick on Ash.

Hell yeah I do. I loved Ash and Gary's rivalry. Ash and Paul's intense rivalry is cool and all but when I rewatch the episodes with Gary in them I remember how much I loved his interactions with Ash. That, in my opinion, is the sign of a real rivalry. Ash doesn't really give a flying fuck if he's on Paul's level or not, it just pisses him off that Paul is so cruel to his Pokemon. With Gary, it was all about having to surpass him and be the better trainer. Paul is a jerk to Ash, no doubt, but Gary simply teased Ash in a way that kept Ash motivated. I'm sorry, but that's the kind of rivalry I like the most.

tl;dr Yes, I miss it very much. I couldn't see it going any longer than it did, but I still miss it.

I just wonder why Gary appeared so rarely in DP.

What was the point of bringing Gary back after a long absence and then hardly doing anything with him? Gary got 3 appearances over the 200 ep span of DP.

What was the point...?

Because they felt like it. Because he's a familiar character. Because it was a nice tie-in between the new and old. Because because because.

I never liked Ash and Gary's rivalry, not even as a kid. Not even now. I'm probably in the minority here, but I hated OS!Gary. He made me want to punch him square in the face.

I was happy that their rivalry was resolved in Johto. But I liked their Johto battle. It made their rivalry end with a big BANG.

But now I like Gary. He's incredibly mellow compared to his older self. I liked Ash and Paul's rivalry 100 times better.

Now that I rewatch the episodes, it seems like a rather bland rivalry. Has Ash even ever beaten him?

Not really, no. As others have said, it's done and with a good conclusion. It was decent while it lasted, but I certainly wouldn't want to revive it.

Yes, in the Johto League.

There are people out there who never knew Ash beat Gary in a league? That only happened what...8 years ago now?
