Do you have a formula/pattern when you choose/start your game(s)?

When it comes to how you set up your game—choosing your character's gender, choosing your starter, heck, even choosing your version—do you have a specific formula or pattern you follow?

Mine is thus:
  • Get the primary version (i.e. Ruby) first. Choose a male character with the Fire-type starter.
  • Get the secondary version (i.e. Sapphire) next. Choose a female character with the Grass-type starter.
  • Get the third version (i.e. Emerald), if any, last. Choose a male character with the Water-type starter.
However, there have been exceptions to this formula:
  • Blue Version does not have a female choice, so I was forced to play as a male regardless. This will be corrected in LeafGreen.
  • Yellow Version only allows you to choose an Electric-type starter, so I was stuck there, too. This will be corrected in Emerald, which will see the return of my Yellow character.
  • My Generation II formula is TOTALLY messed up. I actually ended up getting the SECONDARY version first, where I was forced to be male regardless, and, seeing as I was, like, five or six at the time, I just picked the starter my brother told me to pick: Cyndaquil. And I wouldn't have it any other way. Likewise, Gold ended up following my secondary version formula (except I was again forced to play as a male). Crystal followed my standard third version formula, except I used the female character.
  • If/when I obtain HG/SS, the primary and secondary version formulae will be swapped, in imitation of my Generation II predicament. The difference here is that my Crystal character will take the place of my Gold character, so I'll still have a female character.
How 'bout you guys?

well, until Platinum, in all the games I ever played (Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver, Emerald, Diamond) I was the guy. But I switched to Dawn in Platinum on a whim.

I always have used my own name (Matt) on the first playthrough.

Sometimes, I went for a theme with the names of my player and Pokemon (for example, I named my trainer Ace, my starter King, my first female Queen, my second male Jack and so on (a deck of cards)

And for Platinum, I'm playing as Hikari (no explaination needed...)

I've never used a grass starter ever. I've used mostly fire (Charmander, Cyndaquil, Torchic, Chimchar), but I have used Squirtle, Totodile and Piplup as well.

My pattern?

1) Be a girl named Emily (my name)
2) Pick a starter (fire or water type)
3) Catch one or two more Pokemon I like, train them along with my starter
4) Catch the game's signature legendary
5) Beat the Elite Four
6) Do some contests? Otherwise, restart.

Why, yes, I do have a pattern I tend to follow subconsciously when I start a Pokemon game. It usually consists of the following tasks...

~ Pick a male character. (I used to always pick the females because they looked so cute, but now I tend to stick to my own gender, so I can relate to the character better.)
~ Pick a Grass-type starter. (I've had a preference for Grass-type starters ever since the Gen-I games, though I have sometimes picked a Water-type starter instead.)
~ Bring my team up to six members as soon as possible, before arriving at the first Gym. (No duplicates, and all must have at least one of its Types different from the rest.)
~ Train up everyone to at least Lv. 20 before attempting the first Gym challenge. (This allows for an easy fight obviously, but also gives me time to decide who would be in the team, and also gives me time to catch anybody I haven't caught yet.)

From there, I just pretty much go all out, though I still tend to stick to the same formula of being several levels higher than the next Gym Leader, and balancing out everyone at the same level, occasionally trading someone out for someone else to try everyone out, for team compatibility.

1. Use my real name, even though I couldn't play as a girl until Crystal.
2. From Crystal and beyond, I always pick the female character.
3. I believe the first time I played, I've gone with a grass starter every time except for Ruby, where I chose Torchic because I like chickens.
4. Recently, I've started making sure that before I engage in a gym battle, each Pokemon is at least at level 5xwhatever number gym it is.
5. Rather than try to catch all the Pokemon, or even go beyond the Elite Four, I like to just start the game over and try and beat it with other Pokemon.

1. Choose the game with the legendary and/or fossil pokemon you want.
2. Choose a male player, named Ash (My name is Ashton XD )
3. Usually choose a grass starter; Bulbasaur and Turtwig are the only starters I've ever had.
4. Play the game just to play the first time through, learn the new stuff.
5. Beat the Elite Four and either continue playing or start a new game!

1) Girl with a name I like
2) Fire type
3) Catch HM Slave
4) Catch Pokemon I like, grind to exact same levels
5) Beat the Elite Four
6) Contests, breed, attempt to get shinies, fail at getting shinies
7) Complete any post-game challenges (Battle Frontier, etc.)
8) Restart when desired
9) Repeat.

I always play as the guy, generally with the fire or water starter. Fire more so than water. Then, depending on the game, I train. Hard. By the time I have my first rival battle (if this is Gen 2 or 3) then I have my starter beyond level 10, sometimes leveled up. Also, I usually only get one game in a set with the exception of Gen 2 so... yeah, I don't have too many options.

--Get the version with the more appealing mascot/has the Pokemon I want/relates to me in a special way
--Assemble my full team early on
--Name the hero/ine and rival after their official English names (if they are known)
--Try to build a Sailor Moon theme team
--Have a Pikachu on the battle team if possible (in R/S/E, I had to relegate my chu to the contest team, something I will likely do again in D/P/Pt)

I try to avoid patterns as much as possible. I like each game to be as different as possible from my last play through, so I always choose a different starter, different pokemon to train, random gender, different name, and beat the gyms in a different order if possible.

However, I will admit some patterns that I usually fall into.
-I almost never use the grass type starter.
-In RSE, I always catch a Ralts in the beginning.
-I always train a Dragonite as early as possible in any game.

I always pick the "red" versions of every genearation though it is coincidential.

I'm always the male apart from in Ruby as I didn't like Brandon.

I usually choose the fire starter however in both Diamond and Platinum, I chose Turtwig.

I've really never had a consistent formula...

But I prefer the secondary version (Blue/Silver/Sapphire/Pearl) and I generally pick a Water starter my first time through. I will usually use a Grass starter my second time through, and a Fire my third. If I play again with like a special version I will make a fun team that I like and transfer the eggs.

Also I try to never use the same Pokemon twice (save maybe starters) when going through the main game. Like I used Staraptor and Luxray my first time so the second I excluded them, and sometimes I like to do mono teams.

Primary version, Fire starter, character's a dude named after me, has been that way since Gen II.

I don't match starters to versions, but I do use all three over the course of all three versions, generally starting with my favorite and ending with my least (who I usually end up liking anyway).

Also, I always pick a male character, and from Gen. III on, I've named him according to the version name and/or things associated with the versions:

Ruby: Landon
Sapphire: Sean
Emerald: Skyler
Diamond: Damion
Pearl: Paul

One exception: my Platinum name was Lucas, just because I couldn't figure out any English names that started with "Pl". (And I have to admit, if I had known more about Kingdom Hearts at the time, I might have gone with Riku, Kai, and Sora in Gen. III. XD)

As for my team, I always have to have a very diverse team with no repeated types, and I try to use Pokémon I've never trained before whenever possible. But as long as I have all types covered by at least one STAB, I don't really care what those types are - I think I went through Diamond without a Water-type (with a Surfing Rampardos 8D). Lately I've been plotting out my teams in advance of getting the game, but that's been kind of ruining the fun, so for HGSS I'm just going to wing it. And I never use HM slaves.

Ruby
-Male
-Torchic

Pearl
-Female (The male sprite is shockingly ugly.)
-Piplup, then Chimchar

Platinum
-Male (Why not?)
-Turtwig (to round out the starters)

I'm doing my best to get HG as opposed to SS to continue the pattern.

I always get the blue version (without realizing it until now) and the 3rd game (although I've only played from generation 3).
I always pick the male and chose whichever starter I feel like. All of my first games are JEREMY, while my 3rd games get different names.

I pick gender, Name out of hat, but use my name often.
I get one of the 1st of the duo, and the 3rd version. My bro takes the other one.

I rarely get the Grass-type.

I buy the pairs at the same time. Pick one that appeals most (i.e. Diamond) Choose the male character and a starter that I would like (i.e. Piplup). After I play through, I'll do the other version as the girl and a different Starter. Third version is also a male Trainer. (Except for Crystal.)

My patterns:

1) Buy the two first editions of the game at the same time, but start with the "Primary" edition (Red, Gold, Ruby, FireRed, Diamond). Play and beat the "Secondary" edition (Blue, Silver, Sapphire, LeafGreen, Pearl) before getting and playing the third edition.

2) Pick a boy! Even though I'm a girl, I don't really like the girl players. I only broke that pattern when I picked the girl on a whim in Pearl.

3) Give my player character a Japanese name. In the primary edition, I usually go with the official name or the anime-based name of the character (Satoshi, Yuuki, Kouki, and soon Kenta in HeartGold). In the secondary and third edition, I pick whatever seems cool. Again, Hikari broke my pattern in Pearl.

4) Pick the coolest Starter (IMO) for the primary game, the second coolest for the secondary game, and if I don't hate the last Starter then I pick it for the third game. If I do hate the last Starter, then I'll be picking the coolest Starter again. That's what happened with Chimchar and Piplup. The coolest Starter is usually the Fire Starter, but in RSE it was Treecko instead.

5) Female Starter. ALWAYS.
