Do you have a team build "quirk"? If so, which is it?

By "quirk", I mean a very specific pattern that you always follow when building your team. Me, for example:
*if a pkm is given during the story I keep it in the party 'til the end (like lucario in XY);
*I try to keep the "regional bird" (that one bird from the first route) as much as possible;
*I never carry two mons of the same type;
*all my pkm are male;
*no legendaries (although I can think of 2 exceptions);
*no nicknames;
*the starter has the highest lvl;
*no single-form mon (like sableye or audino)

Well, aside from always using my Starter, I don't really have any universal quirks that I apply to every game, but I am very particular about the structure of each individual team. I try to avoid using more than one of any type, unless I feel that it makes sense within the story (for instance, Pangoro is a Dark type, but Pancham only evolves if there is another Dark type on the team - so I could have, say, Greninja (my Starter) as a Water/Dark type, and then when Pancham evolves, it feels narratively justified, and the Water and Fighting types are different enough from each other to lessen the feeling of redundancy). I suppose I am a little more lax when it comes to Flying types too, but again, only if their primary types are different.

In Gen VI, I never use more than three Mega-capable Pokémon at a time.

I am specific about which gender my Pokémon have individually, but the overall ratio isn't a concern. And that is not to say that I am opposed to things like Male Gardevoir or Female Machamp - in fact I completely support that - it's just that I like to imagine different personalities for my Pokémon, and gender tends to factor into that thought process.

Gift Pokémon... well, I'll use them if I feel like they fit the team and the story.

No Legendary Pokémon, though. Unless it's for the final battle in BW, but even then, I don't use my Tao Dragon every time. A lot of the time, I prefer to use my full, proper team.

*if a pkm is given during the story I keep it in the party 'til the end (like lucario in XY);

Even Castform?

well, it would've been the case IF mine wasn't female, thus it's not in the team[/QUOTE]

I try not to use Pokés of the same type, especially flying types for some reason, not sure why. And I almost always try to have a Water, Fire, Grass and regional bird on my team. I've done that since RBY as a kid. Also Gengar, didn't realize that until I sat here thinking about it. I'll almost always trade one over if I can't get a Gastly in game.

I don't really have a quirk. I like to keep my team flexible. For example if I use Electric, Water, Grass, and Fire in every game, that's leaving out by default a lot of other potentially great Pokémon like Lucario, Gengar, Alakazam, and Hippowdon solely based on not being those types. So it's case by case, based on the games itself and which I feel will contribute the most.

No duplicate types here either. I also try to have a Steel/Dragon/Fairy trio alongside Gengar.

That's an interesting combination, because sometimes those types aren't really obtainable until the latter stages of the game so you'll have to adapt a bit before that point. Also do you trade over Gastly for games that don't have it like RSE and BW?

I tend to not catch Fighting, Flying, Bug and Ice-type Pokemon for some reason, I guess cause Fighting and Ice Pokemon usually don't appeal to me, Bugs feel so fragile and Flying cause back in the day I always had such a weakness to Electric cause I carried Water and Flying types (read: regional birds) all the time and they were always my strongest and somehow that stuck with me. Water has always been one of my favorite types, so I decided to just skip the birds. If there's a Pokemon a like that has those typings then I'll catch them, though.

On the contrary, I usually have Water, Electric (revenge!), Psychic, Dark and Dragon types on my teams, Pokemon I like often fall into those types (especially Dragon) so makes sense.

Otherwise I don't really have any particular quirks I guess, except for maybe the fact I always keep and use my starter and stay away from the regional birds/rodents/Pikachu-clones etc..

I try to have an even balance of male and female Pokemon. Don't know why. I just do it. If a Pokemon has a less than 13% chance of being female, I spend a lot of time looking for that female Pokemon just to even out the team.

For everything else, I wouldn't call it a quirk, but I do have a rule that when playing the main storyline, I do not use Legendary Pokemon during any duration of the game. I hate that in Gen V and VI they forced you to use legendaries and I hope that doesn't carry over into Gen VII.

I also try my hardest not to use duplicate types. It's hard when so many of my favorite Pokemon are of the same time. So many awesome Fire-types to use in Gen VI.

I use the first 5 Pokemon I catch and the legendary except firered

I like to use a variety of types (although I have exceptions, like in my last Sinnoh team, Garchomp and Gastrodon were members, but the latter was treated as the Water type, and in my Blue team, I had Fearow and Charizard, but Fearow was treated as Flying-type because this is Gen 1), try to make a full team before midgame, try to have a Surfer and Flyer on the team (although sometimes Strength and Waterfall show up), and they always have to be pokemon I've never used before in a team (Really trying to enforce this since I used Crobat 3 times, once in White 2, Alpha Sapphire immediately after, and a shiny one in Platinum).

They didn't really "force" you to use them so much as they did "strongly recommend." They give you the option to decline, with the exception of Rayquaza in the Delta Episode.

Hmm... let's see here.

- Starter Pokemon must be highest level on the team (otherwise, grind for it). First caught Pokemon is usually 2nd highest.

- Shared HM duty (e.g. no dedicated HM slaves)

- No legendaries (except for that one time in Pokemon Colosseum because, 1, favorite legendary trio, and 2, it just felt awesome.)

- Long-term team members are kept mostly on personal preference, not overall viability.

From my FireRed adventures with my little brother when we were kids, one things stayed strong as we played our own games.

The Starter, The Flyer, and the Surfer. (Except for that time in BW when I chose Samurott with my starter, so I got a free spot in my team.)
But, that's the pattern we usually go with. My brother has an obsession with Pseudo legendaries ever since he spent time to raise Dratini to a Dragonite back in FireRed, so he always added a Pseudo Legendary in his team.

The Flyer is usually the regional bird.

And I like to keep my team to contain a variety of types, as I usually choose a Fire-type, a Water-type guarantees a Surfer, and I have a Flying(Maybe Normal, or Fire if it's Talonflame)-type in the Flyer. The others are a free for all of things I find and like in my journey.
Gender isn't really a focus in my Pokemon, except when I made a deal with my brother to capture the female Pidove because of the differences in appearance they have as Unfeazant.

I'd have to say...

  • No starter unless they're for a monotype run
  • No legendaries or Megas
  • Every Pokemon participates in battles. No HM slaves.
  • Not required, but I prefer to use Pokemon I haven't used before in each new run. It's a good way to get to know a species, I guess.

Good to know I'm not the only one with that obsession:p

As for other quirks:
  • No mons of the same type (though there are exceptions if they have a different second type).
  • No legendaries.
  • Use Pokémon I haven't used before in every new run.
  • No HM-slaves.
  • Keep all Pokémon evenly leveled as much as possible.
  • Always have a Flier and a Surfer (though if HM's really are gone in S/M, I can finally stop with this one).
I don't always keep to these rules, but I try to as much as I can.

Very Aga style. Off beat style while having power. So I go for off beat, rarely popular Pokemon, keep the HM thing going. No Legendaries, no starters, no main regional bird (Spearow is an exception), defense and speed are the main characteristics.

A big one I've used often is trying to not use a Pokemon an important trainer uses, especially if it's their signature Pokemon. Sometimes though the regional dex doesn't support this and sometimes I really want to use a Pokemon someone else uses. I guess I also like to use Pokemon that are hard to catch or out of the way like Tauros, Skarmory, or Heracross. I've realized that those two contribute to seeing all the Pokemon in the region since that is sometimes a concern of mine.

Using multiples of the same type doesn't really bother much especially if they have differing strengths and weaknesses, like Swampert and Camerupt. Sometimes I don't even notice I have multiples of one type which I'm guessing is because of the roles they play. Bringing that up I'm much more concerned about team members having very similar coverage or similar roles.
