I was looking on my pokedex a few days ago and I notice that flying types arent there own types. It seems that its just normal-flying I think thats a bit stange this by the way is a poll so post what you think to.

Y'know, there is a poll function...

I never much liked the normal/flying thing myself, I mean, pokemon like Pidgeot don't feel like being a mere flying subtype to me... Sure, they use physical, often normal-type attacks, but plenty do, I've never really liked it...

(Though I might just be saying it 'cause the flying/normals would be more useful if fighting attacks didn't work well on 'em. :P)

You know, that never hit me. There is no pure flying type.

In my personal opinion, it feels off to include "Normal" to Pidgeot and Swellow.

Then again, Normal types have always seemed strange to me.

I don't really know why there are only Normal/Flying myself. As they are, they are invincible to Ghost, and Fighting hits them for normal damage. Take Normal away, and they become susceptable to Ghost attacks for normal damage, but it is resistant to Fighting. Looking at this, perhaps Normal/Flying was more advantageous, but it would still be interesting if there was a pure Flying pokemon. It is the only type where there is not a pure specimen.

I think flying isn't supposed to be an elemental description as much as a physical description, so it makes sense that another type was tacked onto it to me.

the way I see it...

if a Pidgeotto was hit by a Machamps cross chop,
would it barely phase him, or would it hurt him?

Roses Ablaze's explanation I agree with, but I never knew how to explain it

a pure flying type would be weird in my eyes

What's particularly weird about flying is that some pokémon with obvious flight capacities have been passed for the type due to the two-type-per pokémon restriction. See Latio/as, who are dragon-psychic despite being obviously able to fly; same for Flygon at dragon-ground.

This is why Levitate was included in the Ability list, dear, which they all have. To give various pokémon the benfits of Ground attacks missing (thank you, says the Gengar) and no added weakness to electric attacks. Lose the STAB, sure, but the only flying move used anywhere outside the pool is Aerial Ace anyway, so.

I've also thought of flying types in the same way that Roses described, that Flying is more a physical attribute than an 'element'.

Yes, me too. Although I do wonder at the sort of pokemon a pure flying type would entail...

A cloud perhaps?

Ok, you got me there. Everything having to do with the Flying type has to either do with ability to fly or with avians. There are only a few moves that demonstrate a connection with the only element this could be associated to; Wind/Air (Aeroblast, Air Cutter (I think), and Gust). I don't know what Mirror Move has to do with anything other than only avians can learn it, and Bounce is kinda like Fly, but not really.

Mirror Move is based on the way parrots can mimic noises they hear - except the Pokemon are mimicing attacks instead of speech. Hence the reason it's a Flying-type move. ^_^

Zeta, you're stretching a lot there. :P

(Does sky attack count? It's energy in the shape of a bird... And is whirlwind flying these days or still normal?)

A pure flying type would be nice -.-;

Normal shouldn't be a subtype of flying all the time >>;

Yes they should. Just because they happen to fly doesn't mean they should be segregated. Flying isn't all that special in the Pokémon world if you look at it.

Actually, I'm not. The original name for Mirror Move is "Oumu ga Eshi", which could losely be translated for "Talk like a Parrot".

No. Pigeot (and I have one on Silver) is strong enough. He needs the added weakness. Besides, it was considered "of supreme power" when used at the Fighting Dojo in R/B/Y.

I think that flying types should be their own type.That way it won't get confusing when there's a pokemon with wings you think is just a flying type but,is actually a normal/flying.That is what confused me a lot.:lx192:

Mono-flying would be rather pointless. Atop from that, apparently in the coding of the color Red/Blue/Yellow generation, anyone who's seen the MissingNo./Ketsuban glitch will know of the "bird" type. One theory states that it was originally a type that was going to be used, but cut right at the production floor, perhaps and never totally removed. Bird-type may be a lost beta type about which little is known. Anyway, it was most likely removed since it was identical to Flying type. Having a Flying/Flying type would lead to quadruple weakness to electric and ice. Either way, normal-type seems to describe if they have no real elemental basis with the rest of the types. Making them pure-flying-type would take away the normal STAB which would leave poor Swellow's Facade less powerful. :lx129:
