I personally am not fond of the battle system in Gen. 4 & 5 because compared to gen. 3 it is way too slow... I am normally Pokemon but come on 2 minutes to finish one bloody battle?!

It's too slow because of the frame rate. Back in the pre-Gen IV games, it required very little frame rate due to limited space - giving a feel that it's too fast, and now the DS cartridges allow more frame rate.

The battle system is fine. I just don't like how long some of the animations are.

Well it is not all bad... in Pokemon black I like how my Pokemon are always moving so they look more life like and less like statues

Up till Gen4 was fine, but Gen5 was kinda horribly slow. I would just press an attack button, work on an essay, come back to see the screen just shifting into the next attack preparation scene. I have to smash the A button like mad to get through a battle fast enough.

I think the battle system has a fine speed, especially this generation.

Agreed, but some people say its slower now, and i still don´t get it, to me, it was fine in GenIII but GenIV... dear Arceus...

I find Gen-V battling to be faster than the previous gens. I like how they show the weather animation just when it's first summoned, instead of every single turn it's on. Now THAT was slow.

The only thing I find that slows the battle down is during some of the stat-changing moves, where the cam will focus on the Pokemon doing it, move away, then focus on it again to show the effect. They could've just kept the cam pointed at the monster until the move was over. I suppose that's my only complaint.

I think the battle system is just fine in gen 5. It was fine to me in Platinum too. But Diamond and Pearl, ugh. It was too slow there.

I think it's faster in Generation 5. Well, it's definitely faster then Generation 4.

It was slow in DP. The pauses between attacks really got to me. But thankfully they improved that in HGSS, and I personally don't find BW slow, if anything I find it much faster than some of the previous generations.

I'm an impatient sort of person, so I'm used to turning off battle animations for most of the games. I don't with BW however, unless I'm really focusing on training my team. So no, I don't think it's slow.

It's never bothered me, and you can always turn the animations off it you want, you're not being forced to watch them.

In which generation does it take you two minutes to finish a battle? If it's in Gen V, then the problem might be on your end.

Don't lump Gen IV and Gen V together.

Too slow, eh? Honestly, I never noticed the speed. I'm going to have to say no.

I remember when I played gen 3 and compared to gen 2 it was boringly slow. My friend could finish a battle in FFVI even before I could get to the attack menu in FireRed. And we should not talk about Pokemon Colloseum . . .

The battles in Gen V are faster than DP, which were also terribly slow. I'm actually happy about the speed in HGSS, for being a new game with its graphics, it is very fast, especially when you turn off the animation. The battles in BW are a little slow, but mostly it is the opening. They could speed that up.

I've never really had a problem with the battle speed.

The only reason I think the GenIV battle system is "slow" is because I've now played GenV and gotten used to the faster speed there.

I think there are improvements to made throughout the game. Including cutting down recovery time at the Pokemon Center but keeping the do do, do, da, do!

I thought it was too rushed in the Gen. III games, but Gen. V has it perfect for me. Although there was a speed change between DP and Pt. Slight, but it's still there.

The reason the battles are slow is because it is heavily menu based... and menus have been made slow.

What I am talking about is, that there has been a high tendency to leave a delay when choosing options in a menu. A quick animation is good, but Gen. IV had VERY long pauses between options and messages, making them last forever even if you turned the animations off.
The delays of the first two generations were mostly caused by the text speed and the hardware ACTUALLY taking that long loading things. Gen III is considered the fastest because it had negligible pauses between everything. Gen IV on the other hand has these long pauses for purely aesthetic reasons. (Gen V mitigates it by having the text go faster, and better animations in exchange of the pauses)

Basically it goes like
- Select
- Animation for the option
- Pause
- Animation to fade out the menu (load time in Gen I/II)
- Pause
- Animation to fade in the new menu
- Pause
whenever you select anything. I can select an option five times before it actually gets selected.

And this doesn't just affect battles, it affects everything, but it affects mostly battles.
But it's far from a problem just in pokémon though, and more like with interfaces in general as of lately. They looking glossy and with fade outs and wait times so it is pleasing to the eyes to read and you surely don't skip taking your time to read is prioritized over functionality.

As for the move animations... they've been following a similar idea. Instead of just having the effects happen more "globally" like in the first three generations, now it goes like:
- animation to first pokémon
- pause
- global animation
- pause
- animation to second pokémon
- pause

Which was annoying in Gen IV, and instead got dramatized on Gen V with zoom-ins etc. (Which makes sense, as if you have that option on is because you WANT to see them)

But in any case, the principal culprit is the speed of the menu transitions.
It's too slow because of the frame rate. Back in the pre-Gen IV games, it required very little frame rate due to limited space - giving a feel that it's too fast, and now the DS cartridges allow more frame rate.
Actually, you are incorrect: The Game Boy games ran on 60 FPS, while Gen IV ran on 30. I don't know about Gen V.
