Do you think the dub will switch to HD when the time comes?

I've gotta say...things are looking bleak for the possibility of Pokemon DP Galactic Battles switching over to HD from DP 121 onwards like the Japanese version did. Why do I say that?

The first hint was that the Season 12 opening doesn't feature a single clip from High Touch. While there could be a number of reasons for this (like "we just didn't want to use it"), there *is* a possibility that they didn't include any clips because they were only given an HD version of the opening to work with and just didn't feel like cropping the footage. I have no proof of this, of course, but it wouldn't surprise me.

What really got me doubting the possibility of the English version airing in HD was learning that Cartoon Network has, apparently, not really been playing a lot of their shows in HD on their HD feed. Reports here and here, for example, state that a lot of their "HD shows" are just SD shows stretched to widescreen. So even though CN can air shows in HD, they're not.

So to me, the chances of an acquisition like Pokemon actually airing in HD are pretty slim to none. What do you guys think?

A lot of things will be cropped and it will look stupid.

I'm not really that knowledgeable (sp?) on HD, but it's a bit worrying that the OP is made up entirely of clips from the pre-HD episodes. I can't really see them having made another OP for when the switch occurs, and wouldn't it be a bit jarring for the OP to be in a different format to the show itself?

I am going to be positive and say maybe it will change although if not now, maybe in season 13, that the switch to HD will come.

So are we saying all dubbed eps will be cropped and we'll be missing footage like in FUNI's DBZ boxsets?

A better example would be the DVD releases of the Pokemon movies 4Kids dubbed, with the chopped off heads and people talking from off-camera. But the DBZ comparison works too.

My local TV-Tokyo station automatically crops the show, and it looks pretty terrible because the show is obviously not framed for a 4:3 display.

It'll be really shitty for the dub watchers if it remains in 4:3. I concur with Dogasu as to the awfulness of 16:9 pokemon cropped -_-

I give 50:50 odds on the switch occuring on the appropriate episode. On one hand, CN hasn't been the greatest network in terms of HD content. On the other hand, they really want and need HD content so they can get the HD feed carried on more cable providers (their HD feed is already on both sattelite services). It also depends on whether the dubbing studio has made the upgrade to support HD as well. If it is going HD, I would expect an announcement shortly before the actual airdate.

I believe it'll air in HD solely because Movie 11 did. Not sure if it'll happen when its supposed to, but I have a strong feeling it'll happen eventually.

Though I have to say I hate how the HD feed stretches every single show. Even the widescreen shows don't look right because those are just stretched out as well. They really need to get someone who knows what they're doing to fix it.

Well, my TV doesn't have HD, so it makes no difference to me. I agree, however, that this is a problem. The thing is that the dubbers are probably working on these eps as we speak and we won't know what happens until it airs.

Was movie 11 in actual HD or was it just stretched/zoomed? I know it said HD (at least on the first showing), but I'm not really sure since my cable company doesn't have CN in HD.

The streching you're referring to is common to most cable networks operated by the Turner branch of Time-Warner (CNN is a notable exception). It tries to keep the center proportional while distorting things at the edges.

I didn't have it at the time, I'm just going off what Bulbapedia said. But it seems odd CN would have a bug that says it's in HD if it wasn't.

Bah. I really wish we could get to the point where everyone just keeps everything in their original aspect ratios. First they're afraid people wont like black bars at the top and bottom of the screen, and now they're afraid people wont like black bars on the sides.

I think it will. It will have to eventually since it looks like everything is going HD.

I have CartoonNetworkHD, and what you say about the SD being stretched to HD, the colors and quality is still sharper and better than the SD counterpart.

With the availability of HD episodes and the fact that Cartoon Network has an HD channel... I don't see why not.

SD maybe for the regular cartoonnetwork.

And Movie 11 was in excellent quality, clear pictures, fluid animation.

I'm sure the dub would go HD sometime. They can't just keep cropping the episodes all the time. If it isn't in this season, it would just be in the next one.

Interestingly, the opening song won't include a single clip from HD episodes. Uh, I really hope they crop it accordingly..or don't crop at all. D:

I hope so and hopefully PCI will switch over to a High Touch version of the theme song by then too. Otherwise, Pokémon is likely going to be a very hard show to watch. I don't see why it wouldn’t go to HD. I mean isn't Star Wars; The Clone Wars air in HD?

I don't know if it will air in full HD, but definitely in widescreen.

Read those threads I linked to in the first post. CN's HD feed is apparently not airing more than like two hours of HD programming a week.

We really can't be sure about that. It's possible that TPCI would see a switch to widescreen mid-season as being awkward and tacky and would therefore want to hold off until the start of Season 13 before doing that.

Why would they wait to Season 13? How is that "less tacky" than switching to widescreen when the episode calls for it?

We've seen changes in mid-dub seasons before, and we've also seen openings kept despite a season change (like the way the Kanto, Orange and Johto Journies openings were arranged according to arc, not by the dub seasons), so I don't see how anyone would find this tacky.

Why would PUSA go through the work of cropping episodes when they don't have to?
