Do you think there should be a 'second protagonist'?

Something I was discussing with some friends sometime ago. It's been stated by the head anime writers that as long as the series is going, Ash will always be the protagonist. The debate over wether or not this is a good idea or not is a big base breaker but... What if the anime introduced a 'second protagonist' for a region?

Maybe someone who already is an experanced battler, who would deal with more of the serious plotlines from the main games the anime is currently based on. Maybe have a few episodes where Ash doesn't appear at all while it's going on? That would it give the people who are tired of Ash a break.

What do you think? How would you want a 'second protagonist' to be handled?

You mean like how Dawn was treated in DP?

And I'd like it, but it'd probably mean 1/3 of the twerps would be screwed over. Poor, poor Brock.

I believe everyone who travels with Ash throughout a region is a protagonist. The show already has three right now

He's talking about a leading protagonist that has their own story and quest, not sidekicks.

May & Dawn was a second protagonist and Iris and clian are close to being one because of there rivals

Unless he means a second protagonist in a second series or special, like what Jimmy was in the Raikou special, I agree that would be fine.

it would be a nice way to test the waters with another male lead who isn't Ash

Wow, wow, wow.
Having two protagonist? Wouldn't that just mess up everything, having two POV of both characters. If the writers of Pokemon are thinking of that, I think that they'll have to find a backup plan if that fails.

The Team Plasma storyline, which is currently non-existent, would be a lot more interesting if it involved a protagonist other than Ash. I don't think Ash is intelligent enough to understand N's qualms.

Brock has always been a protagonist! he's been becoming the "world's best pokemon breeder" for like 600 episodes. What? Brock never did anything? oh nevermind

bahahaha, I love that! N will start talking philosophically to Ash and he will just look at him with a blank look.

I would love to see Ritchie take on team plasma to tell you the truth, but I doubt something like that will happen .

If U mean for a trainer who stars too and challenges gyms i don't think that would be smart at all!
The show would be to messed up! U can not switch from ep to ep to a diffrent group of twerps! than there are the POkes either on would catch it just wouldn't work. a main protagonist with an other goal like Dawn and May can work as we saw, they just should find an interesting goal for them.
for me time has come to change Ash for a new main protagonist! Ash has had such a nice way and I really like him! But it is time for him to win the league and become as near to a champion as he can be! He has a team with real potential and if the half of them reach the final stage he can do great things in the league!
So I hope we get a BRAND NEW PROTAGONIST in Generation 6 !

Honestly im not sure if having parallel protagonist to Ash character would be good idea at all.Sure if they are part of traveling group with Ash still being main star like May or Dawn were than sure that could work as it was showed already in past(although this reflected negatively on proper distribution of screen time for other characters).

But having Ash and traveling companions kept along with parallel adventures being done with new hero most likely couldnt work causing disbalance and clash between two main leads storyline with there not being enough available screen time to properly develop both characters.
This would more than likely cause consequence of characters ending up underdeveloped and it simply wouldnt make any sense to introduce second star treating him as parallel driving force for this show.

Writers are barely able to handle three characters in main cast at same time(at max four)having problems to adequately distribute focus already and introducing another protagonist would only make things worse for development of others.

So im going to say no to this with Ash as only main star being sufficient and already doing its job just fine.

And sidekicks dont have their own story and quests?

To be fair winning one league wont make Ash master with there being a lot more he has to do to become best trainer in world. So even if he wins league his journey doesnt stops there with their being other tasks and regions to conquer to advance his story.

Splitting the show between two trainers would indeed wreck a lot of things, if they even have the capacity to keep up with that much. I really think that kind of idea should have it's own show.

I'd love a second primary protagonist. With a second primary protagonist, they could reintroduce or reinforce any character/pokemon that we've seen the primary primary protagonist encounter--particularly the characters or pokemon who were simple plot devices the first time they appeared, such as the multiple Fungus in "Facing Fear With Eyes Wide Open!," or something like Darmanitan with its feature in its premier episode. Alternatively, the primary primary protagonist's journey could fulfill this role in various places or, with the second primary protagonist, we could get a look at pokemon that the primary primary protagonist wouldn't meet. (For the record, I'm calling Iris and Cilan "secondary protagonists.")

They could give Team Rocket or various of Ash's rivals their own episodes though--regularly, that is.

Meh, I thought that the idea behind Pokemon Chronicles was pretty cool. They could just bring that back, although they could have a "current" storyline--one following a character in Unova.

So, do you mean as in a protagonist when Ash isn't there, slightly like... forgive me if I'm mistaken, but a replacement for a certain region?
Then yes- I'd like a whole series of a different leading character of that region to explore that region. I think they'd bring in... fresh air, I mean the companions do contribute to fresh air, but I think the Main Protagonist brings in the most.

Yes, and it should be a female. Why? Females usually get the shaft in terms of battling if they are not a main character or some rank battler and having one as a main protagonist would be great and true justice. Can you say, meooww hehe

If you're talking about something like Jimmy and Raikou, then YES!!

I hope for a Brendan episode - they could make a short special with May.

Of course I'd been wanting a permanent female co-star to side with Ash.

The writers need to practice how to give enough screentime to side characters. D&P lasted nearly 200 episodes- they could've given Brock more screentime without getting rid of the "co-star-ness" of Ash and Dawn.

EDIT: Wait... "for a region"? Forget it, imo. If they're not gonna be a permanent co-protagonist, I'd rather they not have 'em as a co-protagonist.

A sidestory with Hilda/Hilbert fighting Team Plasma while Ash and co. are completely oblivious would be amazing.
