Do you think there will be a saga like the Orange Islands or the Battle Frontier after Diamond and Pearl? If so, where do you think this new saga will take place?

I'm sure they'll have one
Maybe the elite four will be like the frontier brains so Ash will challenge them after winning the league and Dawn will get 5 more ribbons for that ribbon society or whatever that is (and maybe try again the Sinnoh GF)

While part of me wants to say yes, an even bigger part of me wants to say no. DP is awesome, but most people agree it's being drug out. Something tells me they might be able to drag it out until the end. If not? We might get a filler arc, but chances are it'll be very small. I don't see any Battle Frontier-like stuff happening again.

I guess a large part of it depends on whether or not the game guys will goof off and take four years again, or only three.

The Fight Area, Resort Area, and Survival Area could be a part of a new saga, or extend the D/P series, so I'm not sure.

It depends on a number of things. If this pace is kept up, Shinou will end up being at least 180-200 episodes long, meaning four years of it. When do the next games launch would be a big factor then. Also, what are the writers planning on doing with the league? If Satoshi wins, I could certainly see some sort of 'filler' saga about the Championship League. It's really too early to say though with so many unknowns.

Not trying to derail the topic, but I gotta ask...

Why would the elite four be considered filler? Because he's not collecting badges? No one says it's filler when Satoshi enters the league tournaments, why would this be considered different? If Satoshi does make it to the elite four this time around, it'll be because of the badges he's earned in this region. Not because he's staring a "new quest" like in the Orange Islands or the Battle Frontier.

Not trying to be a jerk or anything, but the topic title revolved around a filler saga. Since that's the case, obviously the question of "what defines filler" comes in. Is it when Satoshi starts a new quest, or is it when he finishes earning badges?

I agree with Yotsuba. I don't think challenging the Elite Four would be considered filler, since the Elite four ARE in-game characters....

I think "filler saga" is a misdemeanor. Poeple seem to apply the term to any saga that isn't Ash collecting that generation's badges.. those being Orange Islands and Battle Frontier which are in no way "filler". There definetly needs to be a better term for it. Complimentary saga, because OI goes along with Indigo and BF goes along with Hoenn? XD

Anyway, I at first thought there would be one after Sinnoh (be in the Battle Zone, Johto, or whatever) but considering how slowly Sinnoh's going I'm not so sure now what with the slow-as-hell pace and all. Not that the slow pace is bad, it just doesn't seem like it will leave enough time for an additional saga between now and the fifth generation at the rate we're going.

Oh, and welcome to the forum, Mythic Mist!

At this point I say the only thing we'll get after Sinnoh is the Elite 4 matches, and even that is only if we're really lucky.

Why? We have confirmed titles up to D/P 61 and Ash still only has 2 badges. What does that say for the pacing of the rest of the series? We have 6 more Gyms to go to, Dawn only has 1 ribbon, we haven't even explored half of Sinnoh yet, and add all that with the eventual Galactic climax, Grand Festival and Sinnoh league...

...how can all that be in less than 150+ episodes?

Agreed with. Filler is, by definition, something which just 'fills up' space and doesn't advance the plot along. Given the 'plot' - Satoshi's quest to become a Pokemon Master - Orange Islands and Battle Frontier do advance it, so they aren't filler in the traditional sense of the word. Complimentary Saga is a good terminology, I think, which is what I was saying when I labeled a Championship League Saga as being a 'Filler Saga.'

I'm sure no one is seriously going to say Orange/BF were "filler"
I also don't like to call them like that but didn't say anything because I know the intention is simply a shorter saga before the next generation instead of extending the current saga
People really exaggerate with "filler" - some even called DP53 a filler despite how much important this episode was (and it's also irritating some people think that filler=bad despite the fact a lot of fillers are much more interesting than plot episodes)

The whirl islands were just regular Johto episodes, so I don't know why that's counted as something else. Most of those eps are just fillers introducing new Pokemon like Mantine and Chinchou, so its regular Johto. The Whirl Cup was also only three eps long.

I think Johto would have benefited by a real filler saga. If Johto was shortened to about 100 episodes and the extra 50 be used for a seperate filler saga, I don't think anyone would have complained about Johto as much as they did. It just went on for too damn long and stretching Ash's Gyms out over a 3 year saga without a secondary plot like Contests around was a ridiculous thing to do.

Sinnoh is gearing up to be just as long as Johto (and possibly longer), but its a lot more interesting because of Dawn, Paul, and Pokehunter J, not to mention fillers that are actually fun. Hopefully though if the writers start running out of ideas again they end Sinnoh before it gets stale and then gets Ash to the Elite 4.

The Whirl Isands is considered a seperate "filler" saga because it introduced an anime-exclusive goal that became the focus of a short arc. Even if the tournament itself was only 3 episodes, it was introduced back in the first Whirl Islands episode, and most of the episodes had the goal of the characters attempting to reach the island where the tournament would be held.

That was still part of the Johto saga
With that logic of three episode tournament being a separated saga than the tag battles tournament is also a separate saga (not to mention how much more important this tournament was than the whirl cup - Paul release Chimchar, Ash catch it, Paul's Elekid evolve, Ash get soothe bell and Paul gives him his that might be important later)
