The GS Ball was an excuse to go to Orange Islands and Johto. It serves no purpose anymore.
They should have admittedly done something with it. In Orange they built it up like a big mystery and then in Johto they just forget about it.
I just consider it one of the many screw-ups of the Johto saga, where the writers didn't give a crap about writing anything interesting. If the current writers were in charge of the GS ball, they sure as hell would have done something with it.
It's a shame, because one of the biggest plotholes of the series exists because of Johto. You'd think instead of that lame filler they gave us back then they'd chop off at least 10 of them to give a mini-arc about whatever was inside the GS ball.

The current writers are in charge of all the anime canon. So if they want to do something with it, they would. (If we get any episodes set in Johto it would be easy enough. Or Professor Oak could just ask Ash to do something else involving it.)
And the writers didn't decide to bring in arcs to cut down on the filler until the second half of Johto. If Kurt had been in Master Quest, we might have had three episodes around it.
