According to The Hollywood Reporter, the upcoming Iron Man 2 is now minus one Terrence Howard, but is adding actor Don Cheadle to replace him.

Cheadle will assume the role of Jim Rhodes, the best friend of Tony Stark/Iron Man, and also the military liaison to Stark Industries. There’s strong speculation that Cheadle will also be donning armor in the sequel to this summer’s film, as the Rhodes character looked at a silver suit of armor in the film and said, “Next time.” In Marvel comic book continuity, Rhodes wears a silver/grey suit of armor and goes by the name War Machine.

As for Howard? From THR:

Marvel had no comment, but sources close to the deal said negotiations with Howard fell through over financial differences, among other reasons. Marvel, which had wanted to work with Cheadle, then decided to take the role in another direction and approached the actor, who is shooting Antoine Fuqua's "Brooklyn's Finest" with Richard Gere and Ethan Hawke.

Rhodes is expected to play a larger part in the sequel, which is rumored to go beyond high-tech villains. Justin Theroux is writing the screenplay.

Jon Favreau will direct the sequel in which Robert Downey Jr is expected to return to the role of Tony Stark, along with Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts. As has been reported, and as the writer himself recently told Newsarama, the sequel will be similar in tone and approach to the monthly Invincible Iron Man series, written by Matt Fraction.

Iron Man 2 opens on April 30, 2010.

I really like Don Cheadle, but I really don't think he's right as War Machine/James Rhodes. But I'm more than willing to wait and have him prove me wrong.

Really, though, I think he'd be better as the Michael Collins Deathlok. Far more depth with that character.

Could be worse. I'd rather have Terrence Howard, but they could do much worse then Don Cheadle.

I hate casting changes, but with this one I'll reserve judgment. I really don't know enough about Mr. Cheadle to say whether or not he'd be a decent Rhodes. I'll just have to wait and see.

ohh come on i kinda wanted to see tereence in that war machine armor

Terrence Howard speaks out:

After the announcement a few days ago, speculation ran rampant about why Howard wouldn't return, but on Simon's radio show, Howard said that he found out about the news the same way the rest of us did.

"It was the surprise of a lifetime," he said. "There was no explanation. [The contract] just...up and vanished. I read something in the trades implicating that it was about money or something, but apparently the contracts that we write and sign aren't worth the paper that they're printed on, sometimes. Promises aren't kept, and good faith negotiations aren't always held up."

I thought Rhodes' character was boring and flat in the first film.

Well, in all fairness...you can put some (if not all) of the blame on the script. He only had a couple of good scenes, and only one REALLY good scene. Personally, I was happy with Terrence Howard in the role. Hell, I was happy with everyone (except Jeff Bridges. Don't know why...).

To me, this is disappointing. Terrence Howard makes a more believable Military guy than Don Cheadle. I can see Cheadle playing Green Lantern or something, but not War Machine.

Honestly, I can't see Cheadle playing ANY superhero. He just seems...too good an actor. The kind of guy who should be doing big dramas with super-deep characters. Comic book movies are good, and fun, but they aren't exactly artistic.

Why did Marvel Studios recast Col. Jim Rhodes in Iron Man 2? The surprise announcement that Don Cheadle was taking over the role from Terrence Howard in the sequel (and now The Avengers) left many fans wondering what happened. Entertainment Weekly has an article possibly explaining how this came to be:

Hollywood insiders believe the exit stems from Terrence Howard's difficult behavior on the set of Iron Man. But those with intimate knowledge of the situation suggest a far more dramatic backstory: Howard was the first actor signed to the film and, on top of that, was the highest-paid. That's right: more than Gwyneth Paltrow. More than Jeff Bridges. More than Robert Downey Jr. And once the project fully came together, it was too late to renegotiate his deal. It didn't help that, according to one source, Favreau and his producers were ultimately unhappy with Howard's performance, and spent a lot of time cutting and reshooting his scenes. (Favreau could not be reached for comment, while Howard's publicist says: ''Terrence had a tremendous experience working on Iron Man.'')

Interesting side to the story. And it's nice to see there was another reason. Not just "we wanted to work with Don Cheadle."
