So, here goes my first serious fan fic ever... I hope despite this you enjoy it!

Rated T mostly for safety; I do not plan on introducing anything too shocking apart from minor violence and cursing.

Synopsis: Wally has a normal life, even though his asthma cripples him down. He begins to be invaded by strange dreams to alert him of an upcoming doom. The warning has been given, and there is no turning back. Together with his Pokémon, Wally goes on a journey full of perils and adventures which teach him the importance of willpower as he fulfills his fate of becoming a Dreamer.

Prologue

He was in an alley. Without any idea of how he got there, the boy began to analyse the path in front of him. Floor, roof and walls were all covered by tiles with a chessboard pattern. Because of that the alley made the boy confused, lost, and dizzy. With difficulty, the young man kept on walking, after all alleys had to have an end. However, he did not find a door, the alley kept on going forever.

Luckily, the boy stumbled upon an attic hatch, although it was on the ground. Without any more viable options, he opened the hatch. The boy looked, but there was nothing to see. The division the attic hatch connected to was completely dark. The young man shrugged. Either he kept on going forever or he jumped. He chose the second option.

Carefully, he fell down the floor, and as he did so, the division suddenly got illuminated by an orange and warm light. The boy quickly examined the room he was in; it was a playroom! Toys spotted the white floor, shelves filled with playthings stood near the yellow and blue walls and the roof... the roof was black, so he could not see anything there. Not even the bulb that was illuminating the room. At this, the boy raised his lime eyebrow. However, it was not over yet. When he peered around the room again, this time the toy shelves were replaced with all kind of random things: a bathtub in front of him, a wardrobe by his side, a plastic chair opposite to a huge television...the list went on. Suddenly, energy hit his head, and he flinched, falling to his knees.

“Finally!” these were not words! They were something else, but this feeling, this sense of comprehension boomed, like an intruder was injecting its feelings into his mind, “I waited for so long...Come to me!”

The young man gasped unintentionally, but soon he understood this gasp had been right. Suddenly, gravity played a trick as it attracted him to the roof, and during his short flight the boy was flipped upside down. Logic be damned, he was now walking on the black roof! Wait... it was not black anymore! Now it was green, his favourite colour. Due to the colour change, the young man could now see the one who summoned him. It was a purple figure, of short stature and bulky body, with two spiky ears, wide reddish eyes and the biggest grin he had ever seen. It was a Gengar!

“This is the floor; you were on the roof.”
comprehension rumbled for no apparent reason.

Then, the boy understood the Gengar was in fact explaining what was going on. At last! He decided to ask a question that had been burning inside him since the Pokémon first contacted him.

The boy wanted to ask “Who are you?”, but his lips could not move! Still, the Gengar looked at him knowingly, like it had heard the mute words!

“I am Gengar. I am here to help. You cannot understand now... but you are too involved. You cannot turn and run away at this point. If you ever meet me in the reality outside... the time has come. Please, do not forget this! It is too important.”, the feeling of understanding invaded him once more, this time like a plea.

The ghost Pokémon waved at him, and a pink and green swirl caught the boy, making him fall and scream, while he waited for the certain fall... for all the eternity.

Door to a Dream - Chapter 1

Chapter 1

Breathing heavily, the boy woke up. That had been the most intense and alarming nightmare he had ever had. He heard footsteps and then the door to his bedroom was open by a woman. She was short and used glasses which she nervously adjusted after entering the division.

“Are you ok honey?” the woman said with a caring tone as she walked up next to the bed.

“Yes, mom...why do you ask?” the boy replied, piercing her with his grey eyes.

The boy’s mother raised her black eyebrow while she made a face of incredulity.

“But...but... Wally, you screamed!” the woman stated.

Wally rose up and sat on the bed’s side, while scratching his forehead. He knew the dream was bad, but screaming?! That was something new for him. He had never screamed while sleeping.

“Uh, I probably had a nightmare or something.” He said hastily, waving his hand dismissively showing that he wanted to change of subject.

The woman understood and cleared her throat to get his attention once more, and her face acquired a wide smile. She then opened her arms towards Wally.

“Happy birthday, darling!” she wished cheerfully.

Wally gasped. He had forgotten his own birthday! Now smiling as well, he hugged his mother. It was his fourteenth birthday, a pretty mundane number but each year was an achievement for him. Before leaving the room, the mother advised her son to get well dressed for the occasion. He nodded and after she left the room he went to his private bathroom.

After taking a bath and brushing his teeth, Wally combed his hair. It was wild styled, but soft and easy to comb. Satisfied with the green forest on his head, he moved to dress up. Wally chose a white loose shirt, a pair of khaki trousers and black sneakers.

“Simple yet elegant.” he thought.

However, he felt like he needed something else. After all, it was his birthday! On his bedside table there was a blue box, clashing with the green coloured room. Wally opened it, and inside there were many necklaces and rings. The boy picked up a golden necklace and put it on. He dispensed his own image a last evaluating stare, and, satisfied with the result, he left the bedroom to get downstairs.

The simple family kitchen looked like what one would expect of it: the walls were made of white tiles; the floor was of a light wood and on it were many kinds of carpets; finally, around were all the kinds of domestic appliances to suit the family’s needs. At the centre of the kitchen was a round table with four chairs. On one of them was Wally’s father, a tall and strong man with tanned skin and piercing green eyes. He was very different from his son, who was almost a copy of his mother, with pale skin and a frail figure.

“Good morning, son! Happy birthday!” he greeted with a wide grin. Wally could not help but compare it with the Gengar’s grin. It was not as wide, not even close.

“Morning, pa! Thanks.” Wally greeted back, replying the grin with his delicate smile while sitting on a chair opposite to his father.

The mother was behind her husband, frying something while looking through one of the division’s few windows. The man picked up his newspaper and began to read it. Everyone stayed silent for a handful minutes until Wally’s mother was done with the cooking. The woman served everyone with a pancake, two doughnuts and a glass of milk. She also put a pot of sugar and a jar of honey on the table.

“Special breakfast, your favourite!” the mother said breaking the silence and smiling at her drooling son.

Wally nodded and attack the food was soon as possible, making sure all his food was well irrigated with honey. After he was done, he left a small burp, making everyone laugh. He looked at the kitchen clock. Two past ten. He excused himself and dashed to the living room. The match he had been waiting for the whole week was about to start.

***********************************

The living room, like the kitchen, was pretty normal: a sofa, a television, and a few shelves. The colour scheme, however, was unusual, with a mixture of gold and red complimenting each other.

Wally stopped and picked up the remote control from a corner table. Next, he laid down on the fur rug which was between the luxurious red sofa and the plasma television. Finally, the boy turned the television on and zapped through the channels until he found the one he wanted.

A tall teenager with scruffy black hair and red clothes stood on the right side of the screen while a boy using a scarlet jacket, black pants and expensive sneakers was on the left side. They were both on a Pokémon stadium, and in this case the arena was a rock rectangle delimited by white lines.

“Let the battle begin!” the announcer boomed with its common excited tone.

The two competitors threw a red and white ball-like device known as Pokéball at the same time. Both opened and spit a ray of red energy which turned into different creatures, floating back to the trainer’s hands right away. The first competitor’s creature was a yellow mouse with his cheeks painted of red and the second’s was a dark blue wolverine decorated by a flaming necklace. They growled at each other and the audience boomed with enthusiasm.

The mouse concentrated its energy and unleashed an electrical bolt, and meanwhile the wolverine did the same but instead launched a volatile fire stream. The energies clashed, resulting into a flashy explosion.

The battle went on, and for many times Wally was so tense he would get really close to the television, almost embracing it. Finally, they were both down to the last Pokémon; the teenager was using an orange fire lizard with huge wings, and the boy was using a bulky green creature akin to the dinosaurs made of stone. Wally identified them as being Charizard and Tyranitar, respectively. Tyranitar had the clear advantage against the flying lizard, but its trainer was renowned and the stone Pokémon had fought a little beforehand. Wally waited for the final moves in amid of expectation.

The dinosaur rushed to the lizard, but it was not fast enough. With ease, Charizard dodged the assault and prepare to attack back. The fire Pokémon opened its mouth, unleashing a purple and yellow flame, causing some solid damage to Tyranitar. The attacked Pokémon’s eyes began to glow blue and lightened rocks ascended from the ground. Knowing what was going to happen, Charizard reacted just in time, opening its mouth and releasing a round of orange flames which repelled the speedy rocks threw by the dinosaur, hitting the foe instead. Without wasting time, the lizard’s wing began to glow white as it flew towards Tyranitar. The impact was huge, and Tyranitar hit the wall provoking a mini earthquake. It tried to rise up, but fainted.

Wally cheered. That had been a great match, intense since the beginning. Before turning off the television, he zapped to a random news’ channel to check the time. Seven to twelve. He had about an hour before the guests of his birthday party would arrive. He got up and lolled. How to kill time? Wally went to his bedroom; he knew the perfect way to distracted himself for an hour.

^I'm being watched...Is that a good thing? ;)

After some ponderation I reached the conclusion Chapter 2 wasn't...a chapter so I fused it with chapter one. It's the second part, divided by a few *s. I'll be more careful next time.

That part doesn't have a lot if any plot involved, but I'll be waiting for you to accomplish the easy challenge of identifying the battlers, heh.

Took a bit, but the plot is starting to move... a bit.

Chapther 2

Wally was writing on an old, worn out notebook. He was at one of the final pages and the pencil flowed through it leaving words behind. Suddenly, the boy heard someone knocking at the door, and closed the notebook abruptly, hiding it below his pillow. He got up and left his single bed, while giving permission for the person to get in.

It was May, Wally’s best friend since he could remember...even though things were getting kind of weird lately! Sometimes he would feel intimidated while in her presence and other times even blush. This time, the first case was true.

“H-hi!” he said nervously.

“Happy birthday!” she wished, while making a cheerful expression.

“Than-“.

Wally did not finish the sentence, because his friend got him between her arms. The boy was feeling hot like a volcano and blushed accordingly. She was his friend, why did he feel like that?!

Fortunately, May did not seen to notice the slight blush Wally still had when she let him loose, or if she did she ignored it.

“So, let’s get downstairs! There’re more people waiting for you and lunch is almost ready!” the girl said animatedly while looking at Wally using her blue eyes.

Wally nodded nervously and they left the room.
The boy examined his old friend. She was the same as always, her brown and neat hair curled on the tips and hold by a bandana. Other than that, she wore a shirt, shorts and sneakers, nothing too unusual as well. Her clothes colour scheme was red, though Wally preferred her green outfit. When he understood May had noticed he was staring, his head turned around, and fortunately his sight met a painting.

“I was just thinking you look as...pretty as this painting!” Wally complimented awkwardly.
May gazed the painting.

“Err, I guess...” she said.

Wally paid attention to the picture as well and felt like he wanted to ram his head against a wall. The painting was interesting, but aesthetically ugly! Monochromatic and made of random repulsive forms, it looked like everything but May. He coughed and suggested they kept on going. She nodded, still perplexed by his statement.

They arrived at the kitchen after two minutes that looked like eternity to Wally. His father and mother were there, along with two other men and a teenager boy.

Wally greeted the men, first a bulky one inside a lab coat whose brown hair had a strange haircut and with a beard which only covered his chin, then a tall and slim one with tidy black hair and who wearing a fancy red jacket along with black gym trousers. They were respectively Birch, May’s father and Pokémon professor, and the new gym leader, Norman. Both of them gave their happy birthday wishes, to whom Wally replied with a “Thanks” adorned by a smile.

Lastly was the boy, who wore very showy clothes, including his signature white barrette that could be mistaken as being his hair. He was Brendan, Norman’s son and a rookie trainer. He and Wally did not go along so well...

“Happy birthday, kid. How many are you making this time? Ten?” he said mockingly.

“Fourteen, in fact.” Wally replied, trying to sound neutral. It was true he looked younger than he was, but Brendan had no excuse.

“Ooh, you’re going to be as old as me!” Brendan said, trying to sound surprised.

Wally sighed inside at the other boy’s behaviour. Why did he act like that? The birthday boy had never done anything too severe to him... Wally’s mother even gave Brendan private lessons for free so he did not have to travel to Rustboro!

“Well, let’s eat!” Wally’s mother announced, destroying his thought line.

The first dish was composed by roasted turkey and potatoes, accompanied by a lettuce salad. They all drank orange juice, except for the two men who preferred to have a glass of wine. Finally, Wally’s mother served a simple chocolate cake, Wally’s favourite, cooked by May. They all sang “Happy Birthday” to the green haired boy and after that everyone ate at least a slice of cake. It was delicious!

“Why did we eat it so early?” Wally asked after he ate a piece of cake.

“Because...” his mother began, winking at Norman, “You are going to catch your first Pokémon today!”

Wally gasped with surprise. His first Pokémon? Oh boy, he had always wanted to be a trainer! This would be the best birthday present he ever received!

“Cool!” Wally squealed. Then, he frowned slightly, “But how? I don’t own any Pokémon that I can use to catch another Pokémon!”

“That’s where Norman enters.” Wally’s father said, looking at the taller man.

“Indeed, Joe.” Norman confirmed, nodding at the Wally’s father, “Wally, meet me by the gym in an hour. I and Brendan will be waiting for you.” The Gym Leader announced.

Wally nodded and bid Norman and Brendan a quick farewell as they left. May also left with her father, they got some things to do at his lab. Wally said them a timid “bye”. Now, he had to wait one hour until he could meet the gym leader and...

“We have some preparations to do, honey”, his mother said, “It’s a short trip, but you never know...”

Wally sighed. Like always, his disease haunted him at the worst times. He nodded and went to pick up a small green and yellow backpack. There, they put a full charged inhaler together with one which was already used, four cheese sandwiches and two big bottles of water as well as a map of the particular region of Hoenn they lived in.

“Don’t forget the contact card!” his mother advised.

“I already know the numbers...” Wally noted exasperate.

“Brendan doesn’t.” she said, ruining his chances to retaliate.

Wally understood what she meant, it was rare his disease could get harsh enough and make speaking almost impossible. He put the contact card in his pocket. Looking at the kitchen clock, he noticed he had at least forty minutes to spend. The boy decided to write a bit more on his notebook.

Chapter 3

A shadowy figure stared at a computer’s monitor.

“Warning. Target exiting security perimeter.” announced a mechanical feminine voice.

The figure leaned forwards, checking a detailed world map. The map software zoomed towards a lightning dot, until it was only showing a little town’s map. Outside a house, the target travelled to another place.

Suspicious, the observer thought, returning to his old position. It looked at the dot, making sure to catch every detail of its movement.

***********************************

Wally finally arrived at the gym. Despite being with the Gym Leader once in a while to hear about his Pokémon battles, it was the boy’s first time inside the building. The entrance was bigger than what he expected from outside and it was entirely made of wood. Many signs were on the walls, with all kinds of messages from “Never give up!” to a simple “Zen”. The tall gym leader was already standing at the middle of the entrance, his presence dominating the division. Curiously, he was holding a book. Brendan looked smaller and frailer next to his impressive father, but he too caused some impact.

The green haired boy began to walk in shyly while two pairs of eyes watched his every step. It felt like the entire world was watching him, expecting everything from him. Fortunately, that sensation endured less than a minute, when Norman’s lips finally curved into a warm smile.

“Welcome!” the Gym Leader boomed as a greeting, the loud sound making the newcomer to flinch.

They were all together, forming a triangle, when Norman’s word stopped to echo.

“Special sound effects” Norman explained, rolling his eye soon after.

“So, time to get your first Pokémon, eh?” Brendan said, interrupting his father’s protest “This’ll be interesting.”

The words were supposed to be mocks; however Wally did not feel taunted, he was too happy for that. Norman took two Pokéball from his belt and handed them to the frail boy.

“One of these Pokéballs contains a Zigzagoon. I’ll lend you it so you can capture a Pokémon...your very own Pokémon!” the man declared, “The other one is empty.”

Wally hated Linoones with passion, and he had good reasons to, although he had no problems with Zigzagoons. In fact, they were kind of cute in his opinion. He received the Pokéballs and thanked the man. The Gym Leader also handed Wally the book he had been holding.

“It’s an encyclopaedia. It contains all the information you will need” he explained.

Wally accepted that second gift, already delighted with the opportunity to learn more about Pokémon. He put all of the gifts in his backpack.

“Now, don’t think I’ll let an experienced trainer go on the field alone!” Norman said sternly. Wally found it amazing to have the most powerful battler in town calling him a trainer.

Brendan knew it was his prompting, and walked closer to Wally.

“No problem, I’ll be his tour guide” he said.

More mocks. OK, I can take them, Wally thought.

Norman nodded, pride evident in his new smile.

“Very well my son. Go and teach Wally how to catch ‘em all!” the Gym Leader ordered.

It was time for Brendan to nod, and so he did. He grinned to himself. Near his father, it was necessary to fake and role play, but outside...things would be different.

***********************************

The boys were walking for quite a few minutes on the road and among the trees, imperial silence commanding their steps.

“So, kid, I’m the leader here, and you’ll obey me!” Brendan said as soon as they were outside the town.

“Fine.” Wally simply said.

Brendan bit his lower lip. Wally’s indifference to his taunts drove him nuts! His face turned red as he exploded with rage.

“LOOK, IT’S NOT FINE! IT’S ‘YES SIR’ OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT INSOLENT CHILD!”

“Roger.” Wally said.

He was still calm! How was that possible?! Brendan was getting really, really pissed off. Brendan fumed angrily and tried to ignore the other, but eventually they began discussing the plan to catch Wally’s Pokémon... after all, if they returned without one Brendan would get the fault. For now, there was not more he could do against the other boy.

***********************************

Sun was going downside when they finally arrived at the green zone east of the town. They began to walk with louder steps to attract the attention of a Pokémon. Suddenly, a bush started to shake... both boys looked at it, making sure to be noisy enough. The bush stood still.

Wally threw one of the Pokéballs Norman had given him. The red laser turned into a small raccoon Pokémon, with bristle fur adorned by a brown and cream zigzag pattern. The Pokémon raised its jagged muzzle and spiky ears, and its black nose began sniffing, picking up a scent. Its eyes, surrounded by a black mask, lowered alongside the head to the ground. The Pokémon followed an invisible trail.

“Zigzagoon!” it growled, a few inches away from the bush, making it to shake again.

A small white form left the bush shyly. Its head was carrying a curious green helmet, jagged by a red horn, hiding completely the likely eyes. It had on what looked like a dress, making it look ghostly.

“Raaaalts!” the Pokémon cried.

“Good job Zigzagoon!” Wally praised.

Brendan observed passively as Wally began his first battle. He retrieved the book Norman had gifted him, and opened it at the Zigzagoon’s section.

“Zigzagoon, start out with...uh... Tackle!” Wally commanded after examining the options.

The Pokémon charged towards Ralts, tackling it and making it to fly a few feet away. Zigzagoon landed perfectly on all four paws.

“Raa...” Ralts murmured with grief.

“Use Tackle again” Wally ordered.

The raccoon began charging again. This time, however, Ralts opened its mouth and a painful shriek left it, making everyone including Brendan to flinch and attempt to cover their ears, and stopping Zigzagoon’s attack.

“Ugh...try, uh, Headbutt this time!”, Wally said, again after taking a glance at the book.

Zigzagoon snarled at its foe and dashed forwards, slamming its head into Ralts before it could retaliate.

“Fast, finish it off...oh wait...” Wally said.

Ralts looked pretty beat up already. The boy picked up the second Pokéball and threw it at the ghost-like Pokémon. Before it was sucked by a red ray, the Pokémon looked at the boy with pleading eyes, making him to take a step back after looking at those beautiful and sorrowful eyes. The Pokéball fell to the ground and began shaking, the button at the middle flashing. Finally, it emitted a beep. Ralts was caught!

Wally picked up the Pokéball carefully. He was not too sure if he should be happy or sad...

“Hurray! I caught MY first Pokémon!” he roared with excitement, making his option.
