are you really specific on what pokemon you use for double battles? like related pokemon.

examples:
tauros and miltank
nidorino and nidorina
minun and plusle
volbeat and illumise
dialga and palkia
etc

or do you just go with a random team?

like pinsir and magneton, rhyhorn and mr. mime, eevee and skitty, etc
and if you go with random, what strategies do you use, or have come up with? (if you're comfortable sharing)

I like using opposites..

example:
Infernape and Honchkrow
Spiritomb and Alakazam
Milotic and Luxray

Not really. I just go with practical partners if/when possible, such as an Earthquaker paired with a Flying type or Levitater.

My Gastro Acid Victreebel works wonders with my Regigigas too.

I usually pick the two pokemon I'm trying to train, or in some cases a strong pokemon to defeat the opponents so my trainee doesn't die.

In some cases, I'll have my Kangaskhan use Earthquake in a Double Battle ONLY if my Cloyster or Crobat are paired with her. Crobat is immune to Ground-type moves, and Cloyster can use Protect.

I usually follow the EQer+Levitater strategy, recently I began using something like, one poke using Endure, the other attacking the first on their weakness, as in a Typhlosion using endure, and the partner EQs on the same turn. Next turn, it uses Flail/Reversal.

I usually put the strongest two in my party in the top two slots. Or I'll put the strongest one in the top slot then a weaker one (that I want to gain experience) in the other slot.

in-game usually just my two best pokémons, competatively two pokémons with as big tpye coverage possible.

I usually have my double battle team of Jolteon and Walrein in XD because Jolteon's mega fast and Walrein is like a tank and for Colosseum I have my team of Umbreon and Espeon cause they rock!

I'll usually just pick two random Pokemon that work well together.

Ex: Feraligatr and Manectric, Manectric has lightningrod and knows Overheat to cover Feraligatr. Feraligatr knows Ice Punch to cover Manectric.

Odd pair I know, but hey, it works.

One I've been using recently is Excadrill and Emolga. Since Excadrill's a Ground-type, using Discharge won't affect it, and it itself has a variety of differently-typed moves for multiple opponents. =)

The last time I did a double battle, it was in the Battle Subway, and I only used two Pokémon - Gastrodon and Kingdra. Gastrodon uses Rain Dance, while Kingdra spams Water-type attacks. It was fun.

Serperior and Archeops is pretty fun. Use Gastro Acid on Archeops to take away the crippling Ability and then sweep. Works with Galvantula and Archeops as well.

Also, Tyranitar (holding the Air Balloon) with Excadrill.

I use a variant of EQ on levitaters with Discharge on Ground types. That way I have more coverage on field damage without team fire, and get rid of predictable water types wanting to hurt my predictable ground.

Generally I build my entire team thinking on Pokémon (specificaly movesets) that go mainly with other two ones. And sometimes are paired with another team member for an specific purpose.

I've been using lately also Magic Guard Espeon and Synchronize Umbreon for when something wants to use status effects. (Ideally to aid a psychic sweeper) Espeon is naturally special sweep and aiming to get rid of such threats, while Umbreon is to further cripple back or to get rid of a psychic sweeper. -- So basically, it counters itself.

My Emolga and Zebstrika make a great team on the Super Doubles subway. Between them they have all the coverage moves needed to get rid of Electric-resistors, and Emolga can spam Discharge to potentially paralyse two opponents at once and simultaneously boost Zebstrika's Thunderbolt and Overheat, while Encoring any opponents that make lolworthy moves.

Plus if things look bad they can both just Volt Switch the hell outta there for whatever backup Pokes I'm using to finish the job.
