I read that Shellos was originally slated to have been a Gen III Pokémon. Now of course, this has made me wonder...

Since we got so many new evolutions of old Pokémon in Gen IV, and so few in Gen III... does anyone think that at least a few of them were originally slated to be Gen III Pokémon instead, but were removed because their prevo/evo wasn't available in Hoenn?

I think Gamefreak said they always do that. They make tons and tons, and trash some, and save up others for another time.

I wonder what evolutions and pre-evolutions they've made that we haven't seen.

I know there was some (Like Cleffa) that were originally slated for Gen I but ended up in Gen II as well.

Cleffa? Really? I wonder what features (like breeding and time) were slated for certain generations and ended up in others. Makes me wonder about the "trashed" ones too. Pokemon abortions? o.0

that really makes me hope that they are saving a Kangaskan pre-evo because really how easy would it be the baby already looks different and kangaskan has been over looked

needs more SAMURAI FARFETCH'D EVO

I have this weird feeling that every Pokemon, save legendaries, will have a pre-evo or evolution sooner or later.

As the generations go on, it is becoming more and more likely that Pokémon from previous generations will get new additions to their evolutionary lines, especially the farther back you go. I mean, in Generation I, 20 non-legendary Pokémon out of the 151 weren't part of any evolution family. Right now, there are only seven of those 20 who still have no evolutionary relatives. For the Johtos, it's 21 who didn't and nine that now do, with nine of the 20 from Gen I getting a relative.

...and then we got to Gen III. That was pitiful as far as new-oldies go. Of those that didn't previously undergo evolution, only Wobbuffet got a new relation. Which is where my theory came from: We only got Azurill and Wobbuffet this time, while in both Johto and Sinnoh we got a ton. Heck, #461-478 is all new evolutions of old Pokémon, with the other 11 new-oldies mixed in among the Sinnoh originals, for a total of 29. Sixteen of them all are related to Pokémon that previously didn't evolve, and twenty of them are related to Pokémon not in the Hoenn Dex. Bear in mind, of course, that only seven of them are related to Pokémon we first encountered in Hoenn, too. Only TWO are new evolutions of Gen I/II Pokémon that we could find in Hoenn.

So, yes, that Game Freak holdover thing seems like the best theory... But I'm definitely thinking that many of the Gen IV new-oldies got thought up for Gen III.

The question is... which ones? I'm thinking that Magmortar may have been, since Mt. Chimney and Team Magma would be perfect for it. Porygon-Z. Leafeon, and Glaceon, too, mostly due to the sort-of tradition it would have been by Gen IV if that had been the case.

I think it's some sort of pattern though.

1st Gen - primary all new Pokemon
2nd Gen - new with evos and pre-evos
3rd Gen - almost all new with VERY few pre-evos and no evos
4th Gen - Almost a carbon copy of how the 2nd gen was. Tons of pre-evos and evos.
5th Gen - May be similar to 1st and 3rd gens.

I do believe however that every single Pokemon that are not part of an evolutionary family will have a relative sooner or later. I pray for Shuckle ;O

Why do they have to make these pre and after evos? I like Pokemons that does not evolve into any other... And I hate when there is two stage 2 (after basic and stage one) pokemons to choose which one will you take.. (Poliwag -> Poliwhirl -> Poliwrath OR Politoed)

I agree with TOG. It seems to be a pattern of all news for odd numbered generations and 1/3rd addons for even numbered generations.

I thought the agreement over Dawn's dub name was that you can't call a pattern with limited information...

Well, that was over 2 names versus four games . . . I actually though the agreement was that something can't be a pattern till it happened thrice.

I saw pictures of Wailmer, Sharpedo, Azurill, Wynaut, and a few others way back when G/S was almost out.

The practical consequence of all this fragmentation is that the Pokedex is now insanely scattered - only the first evolutionary lines are found together in the Dex. I hope they create some new dex, say the Nova Dex, that reorganizes Pokemon based on their evolutions as opposed to their order of introduction.
