Review DP108: Mio Gym Match! Steel Battle!!

Someone told me the preview confirmed Ash is going to use Chimchar, Gliscor and Buizel
While I like Buizel and don't mind at all to see it used a lot... I wanted this Gym to be Chimchar/Grotle/Gliscor and DP 106 caused me to think it'll as I wanted... next Gym is ice and Buizel is likely to be there for the ice Aqua Jet while Grotle won't be used since it's weak to ice... so only one Gym battle for Grotle in the very last Gym? that's really stupid
Oh well... at least I love Buizel so it'd be less disappointing

Yep, though it doesn't look like buizel will get the lime light in this one again. I hope gliscor get a big role in this one, it will be interesting to see how it reats to some strong opponets will it lose it or as I suspect go on to become a competent battler.

He uses Chimchar and Gliscor because his Fire attacks moves are effective against the Steel Pokemon (Bastiodon and Bronzor), and Buizel to battle against Steelix's Ground type.

Looks like Chimchar is going to battle against Byron's three Pokemons, so this is my guess:

Chimchar vs Bronzor (Chimchar Wins)
Chimchar vs Steelix (Ash retires Chimchar after some minutes)
Buizel vs Steelix (Buizel Wins)
Buizel vs Bastiodon (Bastiodon Wins)
Gliscor vs Bastiodon (Bastiodon Wins)
Chimchar vs Bastiodon (In a critical moment, Chimchar evolves to Monferno)
Monferno vs Bastiodon (Monferno wins, Fighting are very effectives against Steel/Rock Pokemons).

Ash wins his sixth badge.

What do you think?.

Gliscor will probably be the one to finish of Bastiodon in the 'final clash'. Buoysel is likely to go down to Steelix since Chimchar is seen battling all three of Byron's pokémon, and I doubt they're going to have Chimchar floor all of these steel guys. That'd be a bit too much methinks. Besides that, Gliscor really does need this one. It's far overdue for a decent battle.
Grotle not seeing any usage is a dissapointment, since they've been playing it's defensive card for a while now, but it's no big deal. I'm looking forward to see Gliscor do some damage, and it's going to look good too, since Iwane is in charge of animation direction. Huzzah.

The annoying thing about Buoysel is that it's not just the Gym Battles it's seeing a lot of action in. Ash constantly uses it for lots of other minor things, such as disposing of Team Rocket, crossing rivers etc. It's rather irksome that, after 11 or so years of writing this show, there's still this awkward imbalance regarding pokémon usage. It's an issue they really should focus on sorting out, imo.
Though having said that, at least Pikachu is finally taking a back-seat. It's not like Buoysel is going to be around forever.

With its recently leared Firefang, I agree there's good odds Gliscor will be the "final victor". I'm glad, as I don't think it's done so yet, and it needs a good win.

Hmmm...Grotle would NOT be a wise choice against the next Gym, so it seems he might be the "hero" against Valkner. Either him or Pikachu-preferably Grotle. Just not Buizel.

How many times does Ash have a PERFECT set for his opponent, anyways?

Though having said that, at least Pikachu is finally taking a back-seat.

I think Pikachu's taken the backseat before, actually. It didn't seem very prominent in the Frontier up until Lucy, so it sat out three whole important battles. It still got to blast off Team Rocket, but that's about as noteworthy as eating lunch.

I must admit, I would've expected Chimchar to get the extra attention considering it's connection with Paul, though.

Given all the different matchups seen in the preview, there oughta be quite a lot of withdrawing from Satoshi's side, similar to the Wake battle.

I honestly don't think the writers sent in Buoysel to take an instant loss, I'd say it'll at least defeat Steelix.

The animation looks gorgeous as well XD

Wow, even I'm starting to get annoyed by Buizel.

WTF? Grotle has never been in a Gym battle yet.

They're really crossing the line here with the balance between Ash's Pokemon.

It's funny how people blame Dawn for only using Pip while Ash doesn't get the same "hate" despite he's doing exactly the same thing with Buizel

It's something they always do, they never EVER handle six pokemon right on Ash with balancing things out between them and i doubt they will start now.

Yeah, its sad but the imbalance happens every season.

Torkoal was only in 1 Gym battle in Hoenn, unless you count the Wattson rematch then it was 2. Glalie was captured so late that Snorunt only briefly got an appearance in Juan's Gym.

Back in Johto, Heracross and Phanpy didn't get used in any of the Gyms, oddly enough. Likewise Totodile and Noctowl only got 1 Gym battle each.

Staravia really is being screwed over this saga, what a damn shame.

A bit disappointing that Grotle isn't being used, but I don't mind Buizel at all. I don't think he'll get a KO this time though, cuz Steelix is thrashing him around badly. I'm pretty sure this is Gliscor's star time right here and I believe it'll take out both Steelix and Bastiodon.

I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that there may be a Monferno by episode's end. Desperation evolution to take out Bastiodon.

Wow . . the preview for this battle looks intense.

Is it confirmed Satoshi wins? Because to me . . this kind of looks like a loss.

Not confirmed. However, Tougan's VA has not posted any more episodes that he is in on his blog (I've checked), which strongly implies that this is a win.

My thoughts seem to be similar to everyone elses. I was looking forward to a Grotle - Bastiodon show down, plus it'd be good having turtwig/grotle take out both fossil pokes. Plus finally a chance to give energy ball a good work out. I do like Gliscor getting some time in the spotlight as well it looks like it has some good matches. Personally I'd have done the match

Chimchar vs Bronzor - Can't decide whether heatproof should come into play and have Chimchar dig for the win or just a flamewheel win. Chimchar is quickly overcome by Steelix possibly using sandstorms and ground moves.

Gliscor vs Steelix - Gliscor wins based on fire fang and its strength against sandstorm and ground attacks. Despite an impressive try Gliscor cant cause enough damage to Bastiodon and is beaten, Ash is very proud of how much its grown.

Grotle vs Bastiodon - Partly weakened by Gliscor the two stand up fairly evenly with Grotle eventually overcoming it with the use of synthesis and a barrage of energy balls (of course now we know Bastiodon has flamethrower Grotle would get killed).

So unless they are playing for the Monferno evo (which i dont see coming this fight) Im not expecting alot, hope im wrong though.

No gym matches doesn't necessarily mean neglected. Grotle still got a lot to do. (Energy Ball, DP106 fights against Piloswine) With the newly introduced defense strategy, Grotle can do defense in the 7th gym. And Ash can always overcome type disadvantages.

Grotle still needs to perfect his new battle-style, so it's no surprise to me he most likely isn't being used here.

Gliscor battles FINALLY. Time for her to show her skills.

Buizel AGAIN? Eh, least it's because he has a type advantage here...not just to show off his battle strength like in the last gym battle. Though it looks like he gets thrashed pretty badly; I bet this'll be the gym Buizel doesn't get a single win in.

I'm hoping for a Chimchar evolution, but I really don't think they'll pull off an evo in a gym battle.

"The VA list shows that Hyouta will be sticking around for one more episode. "

Yes, Roark said at the end of 107 that he will referee Ash and Byron's battle :)

Also, I also noted that Mr. Kazuki didn't post any more episodes he will be in. How sad! But Byron's debut episode was better than all four of Roark's put together, so I feel satisfied (as a fan of Byron).
