Review DP165: Ōba of The Big Four and the Gym Leader Denzi!

- Robot tentacles are coming out of a building's entrance and grabbing Satoshi.

- Looks like there's a huge pile of mass-produced Beacon Badges. Kasumi would cry if she saw that.

- Ohba has Denji by the collar, as if they're fighting.

- We learn that Satoshi and Ohba are going to fight each other.

- It looks like Denji has a Raichu.

- We see Goukazaru vs. Pikachu.

- The preview ends with Denji brooding / looking thoughtful.

Also, I never got the "Denzi" romanization. Why don't people use "Denji?"

Looks like this is really gonna be Pikachu's shine time. Not only is it probably being used in the Gym, it battles Flint's Infernape too. Slight disappointment imo, would've like to see anyone but Pikachu battle Flint.

as for romanization, who knows, same reason people write "nyarth" even though the japanese language has no "th"? because it was written that way somewhere on some official product by translators with no real concept of how things should be romanized and pronounced? XD

Wow, Volkner looks like a drunk in that one scene where Flint grabs his collar, almost like he's in a bar drinking away his sorrows, probably not though he's probably just not himself.

Looks like Flint's Infernape will do something powerful against Pikachu, maybe blast burn, judging by that one scene.

And I'm sorry but I'm not feeling Flint's Infernape at all, I really think Ash's is better, it could just be the way it was animated but Flint's Infernape doesn't look right.

And Geez, I know Flint is an Elite Four, but come on that quick attack should have done something, Infernape isn't a statue. Judging by that quick attack not doing anything, I honestly don't see Ash battling the Elite Four after the league, sorry for those who thought there would be one but if Pikachu can't do anything to Infernape regardless if its his strongest or not then Ash sure isn't going to get far. He might beat one of Aaron's Pokemon but that's about it.

But "Nyarth" IS how his name is pronounced. "Denzi" is just waapuro romaji.

I agree, has Ash used anything other than Pikachu against an Elite Four? And no Grovyle doesn't count since Ash used Pikachu as well.

Now that I think about it, it would be Lorelei wouldn't it? Ash just used Charizard against her, right?

Still that was the first Elite Four he fought so maybe it doesn't count too much.

and RE: the title being weird, four heavenly kings is just a weird way to translate "elite four", so it's pretty normal ep title XD

Actually no. Lorelei's Slowbro used Disable to stop Charizard from going out of control.

Ash was provoking Lorelei for a real match, and by the end of the episode, Lorelei used her Cloyster against Pikachu and Ash lost badly.

The episode is called A Mandarin Island Mismatch, in case you want to watch it online.

Preview looks cool, when I watched it, couldn't help but think, wow, Volkner's going to be a character, isn't he?

Considering this episode features Infernape and Raichu instead of the infinitely more sensible combination of Magmortar and Electivire, it seems likely at this point that we're getting the team with the Octillery in it... lousy D/P and it's poor distribution of Gym Leader types.

Su is the closest thing the Japanese language has to the "th" sound. Pretty much every foreign word that has the "th" sound in it has that sound represented, in Japanese, by "su."

The "Nyarth" romanization does bug me, though, because of the unnecessary "r" that's in there. There's no letter r in the words nya or mouth, and nobody really romanizes ニャー as "nyar" when talking about the sound a cat makes. And, reading "Nyarth" makes it look like the pokemon's name should rhyme with the word "hearth." It shouldn't.

"Nyaath" or "Nyath" are much better than "Nyarth," in my opinion.


On topic...do we know who's going to be voicing Ohba and Denji?

Omg, soooo much sexual tension between Oba and DenJi (<_< ... >_> So I got it wrong before... I just followed the Bpedia romanisation! It's wasn't my fault!). But yeah, sexual tension <3 Yum yum.

Ash didnt use Charizard to battle Loreli since at that time Charizard wasnt listening to ash.

I do wish ash used something other then Pikachu to battle an elite four

voices:

these are the three characters who aren't "regular".

Masaki Aizawa - voiced archie from AG
Hirofumi Nojima - only voiced a COtD in DP
Nara Tooru - has never been in pokemon before

tooru is probably the grey haired man, and the other two are listed first on the list of VA's after the ones who are in every episode, so it's probably those two, if they are listed in order of appearance... but who knows!
