Saw this over on Daizenshuu EX:

  • The DBZ TV series is receiving an extensive "refresh" for Japanese television airing
  • This is a celebration of the 20th anniversary of DBZ
  • While based on the original animation production, it is being updated with new technology
  • This includes extending the frames for formatting on an HD 16:9 display (note: not cropping the image)
  • The original Japanese cast is re-grouping to re-voice the show (where available, and unfortunately not including those that have passed on, such as Hirotaka Suzuoki [Tenshinhan])
  • Sound effects are being updated
  • Unlike the general show, the OPs and EDs are being completely redone
  • While not in the above announcement, other reports are noting that the number of episodes is being reduced from 291 to approximately 100
  • This begins 05 April 2009 @ 9 am

The site has a copy of the scan where all this information comes from.

Re: Dragon Ball Z begins reairing on Japanese TV in April with re-edited footage, mor

So it sounds like they're doing something similar to the Funimation remastered boxsets that were released last year.

Re: Dragon Ball Z begins reairing on Japanese TV in April with re-edited footage, mor

Except these will actually be properly remastered instead of being cropped and then put through a "remastering" process that blurs everything.

Re: Dragon Ball Z begins reairing on Japanese TV in April with re-edited footage, mor

I guess so.

So if the US re-airs DBZ they'd just use the Funi remastered episodes and not just re-dub this new Japanese reairing?

Re: Dragon Ball Z begins reairing on Japanese TV in April with re-edited footage, mor

Reducing the number of episodes from 291 to 100? Holy crap, were there really that many fillers? Well... I know the Saiyan Saga was ridiculously fillertastic and they could definitely skip the Garlic Jr. Saga, some of the episodes before the Cell Games (what a shame, I liked the one where Goku and Piccolo learn how to drive!) and even the underworld tournament thing. Was the Freeza Saga full of junk too? I can't remember.

Re: Dragon Ball Z begins reairing on Japanese TV in April with re-edited footage, mor

The Freiza saga was super full of junk! The fight between Goku and Freiza alone tooke atleast 30 episodes!

Re: Dragon Ball Z begins reairing on Japanese TV in April with re-edited footage, mor

Would cutting them not disrupt the flow of the series? Or is it totally okay to just have them fuse some episodes together to shorten those five minutes that took five hours? I seriously have no idea, I watched the Freeza Saga once and kind of skipped most of the middle of the SSJ Goku vs. Freeza battle.

Re: Dragon Ball Z begins reairing on Japanese TV in April with re-edited footage, mor

Yeah, the episode reduction is giving me some serious LOLs. This is kind of a surprise, I was thinking this was an announcement about Cartoon Network re-airing or something. This will be interesting, but I wonder how the intros will be and what the modernization will be like. (I just am thinking it'll be weird to see Dragonball Z with modern J-pop music, but I'd believe it if they used the movie song)

Re: Dragon Ball Z begins reairing on Japanese TV in April with re-edited footage, mor

I'm thinking they'll just use the new opening animation from the Shonen Jump 40th Anniversary special that was online up until last month.

And yeah, the Freeza saga had a lot of filler. Aside from the long drawn-out Freeza battle (which can be reduced by removing all the unnecessary flashbacks and staring contests), there's also a bunch of anime-only stories such as the whole fake Namek thing, the orphan ship, Bulma and the crab, Bulma and Ginyu switching bodies, Vegeta seeing Goku as a Super Saiya-Jin before he leaves Namek, all the stuff with the Ginyu Tokusentai up on Kaio-sama's planet, etc.

I really think Cartoon Network is done with Dragon Ball Z. It's no longer the ratings grabber it used to be.

Re: Dragon Ball Z begins reairing on Japanese TV in April with re-edited footage, mor

Naruto succeeded DBZ's ratings grabbing... but what will succeed Naruto?

Re: Dragon Ball Z begins reairing on Japanese TV in April with re-edited footage, mor

I'm down for more DBZ.

I just thought they'd reduce the amount of screaming per fight scene :p

With that said, I want to see it aswell.

Re: Dragon Ball Z begins reairing on Japanese TV in April with re-edited footage, mor

Cutting it down to 100 episodes...Well if that means they're just staying 100% true to the comic without all the filler then things should be great.

I hope not. That intro actually looked worse than the original it was a remake of. When I first saw the title logo I thought I screwed up and downloaded some fan project.

Re: Dragon Ball Z begins reairing on Japanese TV in April with re-edited footage, mor

Really!? I thought the new opening looked fantastic.

To each his own, I guess...

Re: Dragon Ball Z begins reairing on Japanese TV in April with re-edited footage, mor

I'm not really a follower of Dragon Ball, but are they using new voice actors to replace those who have passed on, or are they simply retaining their original lines?

Reading the first post would have helped you.

Re: Dragon Ball Z begins reairing on Japanese TV in April with re-edited footage, mor

The two that have passed away - Kame Sen'nin's original VA and Tenshinhan's VA - have already been replaced. Kame Sen'nin's VA, Miyauchi Kouhei, was replaced by Masuoka Hiroshi for the remainder of the Z series and portrayed the character throughout Dragon Ball GT and the PS2 games. Tenshinhan's VA, Suzuoki Hirotaka, got a replacement in the later video games as well.

So my best guess is that they'll have those guys' replacements redo all the old lines.

Re: Dragon Ball Z begins reairing on Japanese TV in April with re-edited footage, mor

I remember reading many things about how Funimation treated the Saiyan saga back in 2000. Fans were saying that the whole thing was butchered to the likings of 5 year olds because that saga had a huge reduction in episodes. Now the folks in Nippon are doing it further and NOW nobody's complaining!
Take that GreatSaiyaman777 of dbzuncensored2 !!!

Anyway...does anyone know who will succeed Naruto?

MasterTrainer, you are aware that there is a difference between cutting out a crapload of stuff for censorship and cutting out a crapload of stuff because it's filler that is simply there to drag a five minute fight over a dozen episodes, right?

Anyway, since it hasn't been mentioned in the thread yet, new title for the series: "Dragon Ball Kai"

Re: Dragon Ball Z begins reairing on Japanese TV in April with re-edited footage, mor

I only found out about this yesterday and I thought it was pretty sweet. It'll be interesting to see the Anime fitted to the Manga without the fillers.
Though I wish they'd do the same for Dragonball (more or less just Remastering it than editing it though)

Except these will actually be properly remastered instead of being cropped and then put through a "remastering" process that blurs everything.
Madman released a Remastered and Uncut versions of the series in High Def and revised English Dubs and they have been pretty clean and cut.
