Copied from a guy on SPP:

In Japan or China (1 or the other) it's a myth about the 4 guardians of the North, West, East, South. They used it in Digimon (The 4 Salavriegns were a dragon, Golem, beast, phoenix) and in Pokemon (Birds=Phoenix, Dogs=Beast, Golems=Regi's, Dragons=Dragons).

First the birds of the south - Moltres,zapdos,articuno
Second the beasts of the east - Raickou,entai,suicune
Third the golems of the west - regirock,registeel,regice
fourth the dragons of the north...???

so they'll probably be dragons in this new gen..

Now correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the West a Tortoise, not a Golem? Cause in Digimon, their was not a Golem Sovereign, but a Tortoise (who resembles Naetle XD).

BEsides that, this seems like a likely theory. I'm guessing the dragons may be asian-looking.

That idea has been tossed around for ages. Who knows?
There should be a trio in the 4th generation, but we don't know if there will be.
And, by the way, Entei, Raikou, and Suicune are cats, not dogs.
Entei=Lion
Raikou=Saber-toothed tiger
Suicune=Cheetah.

I didn't say they were dogs.

I always thought Suicune as a Panther.

The I quoted is an idiot, but this was a good post of his. lol

Yeah, I guess you could consider the Regi's a turtles kinda. Maybe they didn't want more turtles?

I would not consider the Regis turtles in the least. It's a cute idea, but it just doesn't fit. Occasionally the Golden Dragon or the White Tiger is replaced with the Qilin though, depending on what region of Asia you draw the myth from.

I don't know where people got the following idea, but I seem to remember people saying that the guardian of the north could be represented as a golem as well. However, although Xuán Wǔ does mean "black warrior" (at least according to Wikipedia; I can't read Chinese), I just can't seem to find anything supporting this. Maybe someone versed in Chinese mythology could offer more information?

I thought it was

north - tortoise and/or snake
south - phoenix
east - dragon
west - tiger

Well, this guy was wrong, so don't believe the stuff in the top.

And by the directions, their wrong as Hoenn is south, yet don't have the "Birds", and Kanto is "East" but doesn't have dragons. Only Johto matches.

The thing is, Xuán Wǔ/Genbu is pictured as a tortoise with a snake or two wrapped around it.

Well, in Digimon, it was a two headed one with a tree from it's back (sounds like the final form of a certain Pokemon). And I believe it was named Xuanwumon.
