NEW YORK - Genial comic Drew Carey was tapped Monday to replace silver-haired legend Bob Barker on the CBS daytime game show "The Price is Right." The deal was set Monday afternoon shortly before a taping of CBS' "Late Show" with David Letterman, where he confirmed it.

"I realize what a big responsibility this is," he said. "It's only a game show, but it's the longest-running game show in American television and I plan to keep it that way."

The selection attracted more attention than usual for a daytime show because of the prospect of replacing Barker, 83. Barker retired after 35 years in the job last month following taping of his 6,586th episode.

The opening attracted widespread interest, including from comic Rosie O'Donnell after she left "The View."

Carey, 49, spent a decade on his own ABC sitcom and also was host of the improvisational game show "Whose Line is It Anyway?"

He will also be host of a new CBS prime-time game show, "The Power of 10," that will air first next month. He told The Associated Press on Monday that CBS officials first contacted him about "The Price is Right" immediately after he completed a pilot of the other game show this spring.

"My agent called me and said `I was talking to CBS casting today' and in my head I was thinking, `Oh, `CSI' guest star?' And he said what would you think about replacing Bob Barker on `The Price is Right?'"

Asked if he found the prospect of replacing such a TV legend daunting, Carey recalled talking to a friend who knows the game show business who told him, "as long as Bob Barker is cool with it, the fans will be cool with it."

"I'm cool with it," Barker said after hearing Carey's remarks.

Barker said he's not familiar enough with Carey's past performances to offer an opinion on his selection. But, he said, "I understand he ad-libs very well and that he has a very nice, friendly way of working, and I think both of those would be helpful to him on`The Price Is Right.'"

His advice for Carey: "Go out there and do that show the way you think it should be done. Don't imitate me and don't imitate anyone else."

While Carey said doesn't know Barker personally, the younger comedian said he was comfortable that his predecessor would be accepting when he took on the job.

The negotiation process was nerve-racking. While he was talking with CBS about the job, Carey said he got a call from another lawyer in Hollywood who told him one of his clients was offered "The Price is Right" job.

He figured CBS had lined up back-ups if the first choice did not come through.

"If I was going after a second baseman, I wouldn't just talk to one second baseman," the Cleveland Indians fan said. "If I were the general manager, I would be talking to a few second basemen."

He wasn't my first choice.... actually, he was never even in my mind until quite recently. He isn't the one I thought would've been perfect, but there were much worse candidates in the running (George Hamilton, Mario Lopez, Ian Ziering) and he does have experience running similar shows in the form of "Whose Line?" and the upcoming "The Power of 10" along with 2004's "Play For A Billion" one-off special. I'm willing to give him a shot, I think he could be surprisingly decent.

Yeah, I think Drew Carey could make a decent host of "The Price is Right". I really liked "The Drew Carey Show" and "Whose Line?", so this should be interesting.

I hope to see a few Price of Right shows this summer if I don't overslept! XD

Could be worse. Could be better. At least he's a Hollywood personality who legitimately seems like he can be happy for other people.

I just wonder if he'll do the "have your pets spayed and neutered" or if he'll do something else (or nothing)?

I wonder how long he'll run the gig.

Thinking about it, Barker has done this for a good chunk of his life. Imagine a whithered old Carey doing this till he's in his late 70's, nuh-uh.

I loved the way Bob Barker always brought his charm and charisma that really showed through his appearance making him seem to have aged much less.

I dunno if I want to see that if Carey plans to do this for another quarter-century.

I loved him in Whose Line and he has excellent hosting capability, but the bottom line is that I can't see him doing this job forever.

And that's the next thing, I think Price Is Right will really loose it's appeal if ever host replacement becomes common. Of course it's not fair to say much as this is the first time anything like this has happened. It's really difficult to replace the person who built up the very reputation of the show.

I watched this along side my grandmother as a kid and we enjoyed it so much!
I haven't seen an episode in a good while, so while it may not be fair for me to judge Carey's place, I'm sure the people watching daily will have many mixed opinions about Carey's new role. [certain other events in a certain anime come to mind]

I wish him luck, but I'm not sure what to think of Carey just yet.

Shoot, I had a difficult time adjusting to the rather upbeat side announcer they use now. I thought it changed pretty dramatically when they lost Rod Rodney as the backup announcer. :'(. It felt as if a certain spark had lost the urge to ignite.

Drew Carey on The Price Is Right...interesting concept. I love him on Whose Line, I have all the episodes of the American version on my computer and watch them often for laughs. Barker gave him great advice, to do the show the way HE thinks it should be done.

Anyone remember Ray Combs, the host of Family Feud who (sadly) committed suicide in 1996? For some reason I get a Combs-like vibe from the idea of Carey as a game show host, and that's a good thing---had he lived, Combs would've been one of the true stars of the genre today.

EDIT: When I saw Todd Newton doing the live stage Price at the Showboat casino in 2004, he used the spay and neuter line at the end, but I believe he did so because he has a huge amount of respect for Barker. (The line isn't exclusive to Barker anyway; Joker's Wild host Jack Barry used it on occasion too)

He's alright, but not exactly who I would have chosen myself. :(

Instead of selecting a well-known celebrity to replace Barker, they should have found an ideal candidate from the pool of regular joes. That's all Bob Barker was before this series (and its 35+ year long run) catapulted him into superstardom: he was just a regular joe who hosted game shows.

I met Drew Carey in person when he came to visit the U.S. Navy/Air Force base in Diego Garcia during Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was wearing his old Marines uniform, but he had stapled an "AIR FORCE" patch on top of the patch that said "MARINES".

*resists the urge to explain how bad Drew Carey was in comparison to Clive Anderson in terms of Whose Line it is Anyway? hosts*

I'll be intrigued to see how Drew Carey does. My big thing is that the set of The Price is Right looks as though it has seen little to no renovation in its 30 (35?) years, making it feel like you're watching a piece of history. Yeah, you could argue the same about Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune, but these shows have had renovations that are noticeable, wheras Price is Right, I feel, has looked exactly the same everytime I've seen it. It has the old school game show feel as opposed to the sets of things like Deal or No Deal and Who Wants to be a Millionaire?. I wonder if Drew will change that?

Hey, alright. Drew Carey is great, I hope he'll do well with the show.

'Gonna miss Bob though =/.

"Good evening everybody and welcome to The Price is Right, the show where everything's made up and the points don't matter...er, sorry, force of habit..."

lol, Makes me wonder how he'll he introduce contestants.

Barker did suggest that Carey 'carry' it off in his own style.

I heard from somebody who was a stand-in for today's rehearsal of Drew's other show, "The Power of 10." He said that Bob Barker actually called Drew personally during the rehearsal to offer him some words of advice and that Drew was nothing but respectful and enthusiastic about keeping the show the same, even requesting permission to use the spay and neuter line (Barker said he could).

Not true. He was already well-known and very popular for his then sixteen-year run on "Truth or Consequences."

(As a note, "ToC" lasted 1956-1976, so of the three game shows he hosted---"Price", "ToC" and "The Family Game," only the third lasted less than twenty years. He also served as a stand-in host on "Dream Girl of '67" for one week and "Tattletales" for two or three weeks.)

Judging by his interactions with audience members over the course of Whose Line, Drew does seem like a good guy, and that experience should help a lot in TPIR.

Some new notes:

It's been revealed a new set has been built for the show, incorporating "retro elements" but able to be taken apart for road shows (Carey mentioned he only saw the new set for the first time last Thursday, and also that a New York show is being planned)

The theme song will be rerecorded, in stereo. This doesn't seem like a huge change but they may alter it, I don't know.

Interestingly, the title of the show in ticket information is now "The New Price is Right," the title Barker's had when it began in 1972 to signify the difference from the old Bill Cullen version. (TNPiR was also the title of a very shortlived nighttime version with a different format in 1994, hosted by soap actor Doug Davidson)

Does anyone remember on Tonight Show when he's temporary hosting when Jay Leno was Michael Jackson's Witness? Anyone?
