Lately, within the past few weeks, whenever I try to recharge my DS, it makes a loud squealing noise. I've checked it in several plugs and they all do the same thing, so I know it's got to be the system.

What's doing that? And why would it suddenly start when it never did before?

Poor connection of the cable to the DS could be the reason why it is mucking such a weird noise. Perhaps it's best to purchase a new cable from Nintendo directly.

If its not the plug then maybe it's the battery, though trying a new cord first would be a good idea. [Is this the old DS?]
You can actually check the condition of the battery by unscrewing it from the casing and checking to make sure the leads and contacts are in check. If any of them are rusty looking or corroding with odd liquids [er don't touch!] get a new battery.

It's a DS Lite, if that does anything. I got it last Christmas, so not even a year old.

What do I do if I need a new battery? Is it a standard rechargable, or would I have to order it from Nintendo?

"Replacement batteries are available from select electronic stores and Nintendo's website."

Says Wikipedia.

My local EB Games actually sells new batteries with tiny battery charger pods (for the battery itself not the DS.) Have you checked any stores that might sell anything like that?
