Hello all:

I am 97% certain that I will be buying myself a DS Lite when they launch in the US. Now, I've already decided that I will be getting a copy of Opera DS when that is made available*, but I'm also looking at the games.

I loved Age of Empires, which I played back when I used Windows, so I figure I can pick up the DS version cheap (used).

So I'm looking at another game. Unfortunately, Diamond and Pearl are not out yet, and an import of one of them would be my choice. I'm not terribly crazy about the other Pokemon games I've seen for the DS either.

So what would you suggest? I've looked at the Brain Games, but don't know much about it... any thoughts for someone who's largely a non-gamer?

If there has been a remake of Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins for GBA or DS, I'd definitely buy that, but I haven't seen one...

* If the US release date is unveiled soon and it's not too far from the Japanese one in June, then I'll wait it out. Otherwise I'll probably import. I want it before I go on vacation at the end of July.

What about Animal Crossing and Mario Kart?

Someone else recommended Animal Crossing to me, but I know absolutely nothing about it. I don't know much about Mario Kart either (though I've at least seen that played before).

Honestly, I'm not much of a gamer at all. I know nothing about most games out there. I do like racing games, but what sets Mario Kart apart from the many other racing games I saw?

Animal Crossing: WW
Mario Kart DS
Nintendogs
Meteos
Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time
Advance Wars: Dual Strike

Heck, just go here for a list of the top-rated DS games, and links to reviews of them.

Well there so many great games on the ds. I almost own all the games.
My Favorite games are Super Princess Peach. Brain Age, Nintendogs, LostMagic, Trauma Center under the knife, metroid Prime hunters, pokemon Trozei,Trace Memory :which is a short game, and Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney,Electroplankton.
Electroplankton is only brought nintendo and selective online stores. NOT sold at local walmart.hehehe

People, I didn't want lists of games stolen from other sites--I've already looked at all of them. I want to know what YOU think. Pick a game you like that you think a non-gamer like myself would like, and explain why you think I'd like it.

I came here for the opinions of people I know from BMG, not from faceless corporate websites.

I own 9 Nintendo DS games. I bought all but one (Spider-Man 2) and have been happy with my purchases (Spider-Man 2 sucks horribly). But games that I would recommend to anyone:

Lost in Blue. HIGHLY addictive. EXTREMELY engaging storyline. Great use of the touch screen, and a game that really forces you to use your head (or a guide). While the story's pretty straight-forward, there are enough surprising turns you run into JUST as you're about to get bored. Really a great game.

Advance Wars: Dual Strike. If you're a fan of strategy-based games, you canNOT own a Nintendo handheld and not own an Advance Wars game. It's not the most challenging series, but there are enough extras (especially on Dual Strike) to make you keep playing.

ANY Mario game. That's just a must have for any Nintendo system. Just wish I had the cash to pick up New Super Mario Bros. when it comes out. But I'll snag it eventually. And until then, I can play Super Mario 64 DS.

Animal Crossing: Wild World. A great game to play when you're sick of every other game you own. No REAL objectives, so you never feel obligated to keep playing until you've made it to a certain part. No real challenges. Just a generally fun game.

There are others, but they're really only fun if you're familiar with the other games in the series. Pokemon Dash and Trozei are fun, but I wouldn't recommend them unless you're a die-hard Pokemon fan and want any game with "Pokemon" in the name.

I would personally suggest Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney~

It's a particularly well-written/well-localized text adventure, in which you play a rookie defense attorney trying his best to stand up for the wrongfully-accused. The gameplay itself is simple - it focuses mainly on investigation and critical thinking; to find pieces of evidence, and then to present them at just the right time to find flaws in witness testimonies. So, the game has a more relaxed pace than some others.

*shrug* But I'm not a non-gamer, so I can't really say whether or not you'd enjoy it. It's really the type of game anyone could get used to, however, if you're not into solving cases or sitting through courtroom drama, there might not be enough of a draw for you.

Wario Ware Touched! is a highly addictive game. The game is composed of hundreds of mini games that force you to use the touch screen or microphone to do things like trace a drawing, tap a stone repeatedly until it becomes a statue, or draw a path for someone to follow, to name a few. It may be a little fast-paced at first, but before long you'll get used to it and love the absurdity of some of the mini-games.

I also absolutely love Viewtiful Joe Double Trouble, but that game may not be the best thing for a non-gamer to jump into.

A non-gamer should like Animal Crossing. It's easy to understand and get into, and terribly addicting.

Wario Ware Touched! was very addictive....but if you're going to get too addicted to it, you'll probably get tired of it fairly quickly, as it doesn't take too long before it becomes fairly repetitive, if you're good enough with the touch screen. I hit the Gnarly Mix the day after I got the game.

Age of Empires on the DS is NOT the same as the PC version. It's turn based. Steer clear if you don't like that sort of thing.

Of course, if you do like that sort of thing, I strongly recommend any of the Fire Emblem series for the GBA. Damn good games, and being a non-gamer, you'll appreciate that it can save your game with you just turning the console off at any point in the action. Of course, this means that if you screw up a mission (say, one of your people dies), you have to restart from the beginning of that mission, but that's part of the whole challenge of the game. ^^;

I saw that... I assume it's like Civ III?

Something like that, yes.

That's cool then--I loved Civ III. Even if I sucked at it just as bad as AoE. =P

(Never won a multiplayer AoE. Ever. Except against the AI, but yeah.)

A propos of nothing, Arcy, whatever happened to that rumored EU II port for the DS? I haven't been keeping abreast of news on that particular field.

(Also, whooo, EU III in 2007!)

Let’s see:

Get it by now? Meteos is pure awesomeness rolled up in one simple looking puzzle game. It is, quite simply, the best puzzle game I have ever played. Yes, I like it more than Tetris even. Plus, it’s not just a simple “get the high score and brag to your friends” puzzle game either, similar to Super Smash Brothers for N64 and GCN (they were designed by the same person) there’s a lot of stuff you can collect; new planets, music for the sound test, and items.

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow is also a must have action game. It’s the first Castlevania game I’ve played so the story is confusing me a little, but the best part of the game is the game play anyways. If you’ve ever played one of the 2D Metroid games it’s sort of like that mixed in with RPG elements; the game is entirely nonlinear although you’ll need to collect various abilities to get past obstacles that block your path at first. You can get various kinds of weapons such as your standard swords, stronger yet slower axes, weak guns and other things that are able to attack distant enemies, and so on.

If you like platforming and never played it on the Nintendo 64 I also recommend Super Mario 64 DS. It’s a fun game (although somewhat awkward to control at times), plus it has four different characters and 30 some minigames that can be unlocked. There’s a lot of levels and objectives in them, some of which are really hard... Then again, I’m not the best at platforming games...

It seems you like strategy games somewhat, so you might want to check out the Advance Wars series (two games on GBA, one on DS). They’re similar to Fire Emblem, however instead of having predefined units you (mostly) need to collect money and build them yourself as is standard with most PC strategy games. There are quite a lot of units (although they don’t vary much from version to version) each of which has different purposes, such as tanks, rockets, AA missiles, recon vehicles, subs, fighter boats, jets, APCs, and others. In addition, in Advance Wars 2 and DS (not sure about the original) there’s a map editor mode you can use to make your own maps, which you can then face your friends on in the single game multiplayer (you take turns passing it around when your turn ends). I have Advance Wars 2, and while I’m not that good at it it’s still a lot of fun to play.
