I'm getting a new DS soon, as my old one (a DS Lite) has a severe crack near the hinge. I've heard that hinge cracks are a common problem with the DS Lite, and that DS Phat (the original DS) is more durable.

I'm unsure as to which one to get, as DS Lites are said to be less durable than DS Phats, but DS Lites are smaller, and it is easier to obtain the accessories for them (carry cases, screen protectors, etc)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated :)

Hm. That's interesting, I've had no cracks in my Lite and I've had her for a year. :) Guess I'm rather lucky..

Both are fairly durable, so I'd go for a Lite. If you get a case for a Lite, you have a smaller chance of getting cracks.

Both have their ups and downs. Lites, I think at least, are much more common, (Although this WILL be different for other people!!) and plus, I think they're cuter :D

I have nothing against regular DSes. ;)

Huh. Guess I'm just unlucky, then.

I had a case for the Lite, but the strap on it was craptastic, so it kept breaking. I noticed the crack a while ago, but it was small back then, so I guess I ignored it... *facepalm* I got a new case for it a while back, though.

Lites are more common where I live, too.

By the way, I've had the DS for over a year, so sending it to Nintendo is not an option (I wouldn't send it away, anyway, as our postman sucks DX)

Get a DS Lite, more battery life and the screen is WAYYYYY brighter than the original. My sister has an original DS and I have a DS Lite, and I hate playing on her's because it's so heavy and dark DDx

I have a minor crack on my hinge, but it's really no big deal. I don't really see the problem . . .

DS Phat for the win.

The durability makes up for the blinding screen...

Mine's pretty bad, it's not unplayable, but I'm worried about it breaking...

I have used a DS Phat before, and the screen was kind of hard to see compared to my Lite.

Yeah, I'm still kinda torn between the two, though, as it is difficult to find DS Phats/DS Phat accessories (cases, etc) where I live, and I've heard that Nintendo has made the Lite's hinges more durable...

Well, DS Lites are more common where I live, but I miss my Phat one. She was stolen from my bag at school. After that I got a Lite, the touch screen on which broke. They aren't very durable at all. I'm on my third one now which, as of yesterday, has a smashed top screen. By a HUGE stroke of luck, my friends brother-in-law fixes consoles for a living, and is now performing a top screen transplant between the two (My warranty having expired already.)

I think that the major problem with Lites is that the top part is a little to thin and flexible. If you look at the Phat ones, they have a much more solid top section, not to mention a stronger hinge (another problem with my first Lite.)

IMO, if you want your DS to last, buy a Phat one. The screen may be duller but at least you'll be still able to see it in the long run.

I actually like the screen on the Phat ones. That being said, I had never used a backlit screen before this one, not even the SP which I never bought, and I have grown accustomed to it. Plus, I agree with the statement that the Phat ones are more durable. Mine accidentally fell down 4 concrete steps with an edge, and only has a minor scratch in the case.

Yeah, I never had an original ds but I have had a lite for half a year and I use it daily, often carrying it in my pocket. The only problem I have had with it is I have a dead pixel that will randomly show up for a week then leave to return a month later >.>

I've never dropped it and I cant seem to find any cracks by the hinges but now im worried... would one of you guys mind posting a picture of were these cracks start so I could have a reference? o_O

The original DS is the best.

Plus, it's a stupid name for it. The opposite of Light is either Dark, or Heavy, not fat.

Whoever created that name is a moron.

Yeah, I noticed that my cousin's DS Phat has better hinges, and after taking a closer look at my DS Lite, I noticed the plastic near the hinges is rather flimsy. The screen's a little darker, but I can live with that.

Buy a phat, mod the backlight. Now you've got the best of both worlds. :)

I don't know how to do that, and I don't wanna mess with it... :sweatlol:

@ Haseo: I have no idea who created that name *shrug*

They stop making stuff for the plain ds so you should go with the DS lite because it lighter, brighter, smaller. But Like in 1 or 2 years nindeno is going to make a new ds. And you can move by moving you ds the ways you want to go. I can't wait :D

Yeah, but I've heard the original DS/DS Phat/whatever you want to call it is more durable, and the screen is slightly brighter than a GBASP's screen with the backlight turned off (played my cousin's a while back, so yeah) I'd like my DS to last longer than a year... >_>

Nintendo is making a new DS? Do you have proof?

I'm going to see if I can get an original DS.

Yes, and even that DS isn't "fat". "Fat" is the Game Boy brick.

Anyways, having both a DS and DS Lite (the regular DS is actually my brother's, but we share stuff), I have to say I prefer the Lite only because of the image quality. The enhanced backlight does make stuff look a little more vibrant, and the fact my DS Lite is black helps the effect too.

Outside of that, the DS Lite is a lot more fragile than the normal DS. The plastic feels a little weaker, and since it's more compact, it's more susceptible to impact damage. Also, GBA carts stick out of the GBA slot. THis is a real pain when you have it in your pocket and you are sitting down.

Also, the DS Lite seems to have a higher prevelance of dead or stuck pixels. When I first got my DS Lite, it had a very bad one in the upper left of the top screen. It would show a really bright green/blue when the screen was black or had a dark BG. Nintendo sent me a new one. This one has two very subtle ones. One on each screen. They are nowhere near as distracting as the big one on the first DS Lite, but still.

Also, cracked hinges. D:

Don't get me wrong, I love the Lite. :) But I think people shun the larger DS too much. They both have their goods and bads, it's what you prefer to deal with that should make your decision. The sturdiness of the original, or the more vibrant visuals of the Lite...

My old (And current) DS:

-Had it's R-Button fried
-Fell down a flight of stairs
-Had it's hinge break
-Was stepped on a few times
-Fell off an airplane and landed on a plate of Concrete
-Eaten by an Elephant
-DIPPED IN LAVA!!!!!

........

Okay, so maybe the last three were made up. XDDDD

But yeah, mine's pretty durable. It's only been through one repair in it's lifetime.

I havent' tried DS lite, though. I'm happy with my own.

Well, I've got my new DS (original version) and I'm pretty pleased with it :D

Umm, since this thread is kinda pointless now, can a Mod/Admin close it? Thanks! :)

Well, DS Lites are brighter, smaller and just better looking (except for how the GBA Games don't really fit). But, I wouldn't be surprised if the DS Phats are more durable and they're cheaper. Overall, both play the same games, though. So if you have some money to spend go for the Lite, otherwise I'd choose the Phat, although it gives you less "Street Cred." *Giggle*

Whoops, sorry for posting after you decided.
