I've had the original DS for a long time now and I finally feel it's approaching its end, its lighting issues are beginning to but me, the prevalent scratches, etc. I've decided I want to spring for a new DS system. I've always disliked the DS Lite, mostly for the awkward placement of the power button and the hinge issues the earlier ones had, so I've held off for the longest time. Until now.

The DSi and the DSi XL, DS systems with internet capabilities more or less. I've decided that I was going to spring for a new one, but (For the life of me) I can't decide which. 8[

I've heard a lot of talk how DSi XLs are for the older crowd, larger screens, bigger styluses, etc. But I think the larger screen idea is a blessing, but I'm not sure if it would show the choppiness of the graphics or sprites in the games I play. Predominantly, I use my DS for Pokemon, but I use it for Final Fantasy III and Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days too.

I'm just wondering if anybody has any input on which would be the better deal. /=[

The only games I have are pokemon, so I don't know anything about final fantasy. I just use the dsi, I got it pretty cheap on amazon, and screen size isn't really an issue, so I'd reccomend a regular dsi.

I personally prefer the DS Lite because of its GBA slot, and I have a lot of GBA games. But between the two you listed, I would choose the XL because I don't mind the slight pixelation gained from a bigger screen size. I love its bigger screen.

Well, Like the above, I'd say DS Lite. Cheaper, GBA capability. The camera sucks anyway. Seriously. It's a bad gimmick. But of the two listed, the DSiXL. At least it made the Gimmicks the DSi Added better.

DS lite. It is cheaper, it has a GBA slot, and it is reigon free, so while DSI users will moan about how they can't play blakc and white in japanese, you will be able to play it.

Though, if you despratly want a dsi, get a DSI XL. It has a huge screen, and is bigger too.

Umm, the DSi is only region-locked for DSi features and such.

They'd be able to play it, they just won't get the enhancements.

But anyways, get the DS Lite, the DSi is just a stupid gimmick.

DSi > DSi XL. Seriously, XL is just DSi, but you have to have huge, HUGE pockets to carry the damn thing around. To me it's a step away from Gunpei Yokoi's "lateral thinking of withered technology" idea that made Nintendo such a beast in the handheld market.

It is locked for carts too, though. It has been tested.
Since B&W are DSI enchanced, they are reigon locked (on dsi) too.

I belive the DSi and the DSi XL are a waste of money, the DSi is just a DS with a camera, so what, I can just use my regular camera, or even my phone, and the internet features are just plain crap anyway, the DSi XL is the same thing but less compact and non-portable, so go figure, want my advice? Go for the DS lite, it's light, it's got awesome colours (I have red :3) and it doesnt cost a fortune, trust me, you dont need a DSi, it's just a cheap marketing gimmick, "Hey guys, lets make a DS and stick a camera inside it and pretend it has exclusive games! Put that in the adverts too! And watch money pour out of guillible pockets!". When playing the games, you won't notice ANY difference.

EDIT: Oh, DS Lites have GBA game slots, so add-on's such as Guitar Hero or the dongle method on the Pokemon main sereis games will be rendered useless.

EDIT 2:Wow, a lot of people agree with me on this one...

Apparently the DSi XL has the same screen resolution as the normal DSi. The buttons are squished up against the sides as well. I'd recommend a DSi, as long as you already have something to play GBA games on it. These people are saying that the DSi is just a DS with a camera, and that it's a waste of money, but it's actually a lot more. And it costs a good $30 less than a DSi XL.

But if you get a DSi or DSi XL, you won't be able to migrate.

Since when were BW DSi-enhanced? I've only seen them advertised as DS games. I'm thinking you mean 3DS-enhanced. As far as DS games, though, my Japanese SoulSilver plays normally on my US DSi.

If you care about GBA compatibility (and Pal Parking, etc.), then like some others in this thread I'd go with a DS Lite. It's cheaper, and the GBA functionality (IMO) beats out the DSi's added features.

However, if GBA compatibility isn't important to you for whatever reason, and you like the look of a decent number of DSiware titles... you may as well go with the DSi or XL. Unless you can stand to wait another 6 or so months, anyway, as the 3DS may very well be out by then. Between the regular DSi and XL, it depends on what you're looking for. The XL is basically just a more expensive DSi with a larger screen, and it isn't available in very nice colours.

As noted in this thread, the game code on the revealed boxart uses the "TWL-xxxx-JPN" format, instead of "NTR-xxxx-JPN". That indicates the cartridges will be DSi-enhanced, which means they'll be subject to region-locking when played on a DSi.

I understand I wont be able to migrate or play my GBA games on the DSi or DSi XL, but that's not really an issue. I'm still going to HAVE my original DS 8P. I don't migrate excessively, but it still has its uses, plus I have a couple GBA games I want to be able to play in the future, so my current DS isn't going anywhere.

A lot of you recommend the DS Lite, which I understand completely. I just have a couple issues with them that are minor all and all, but still can be a bother (my little brothers both of them, so I'm familiar with them). My biggest issue is the Power switch placement: on the side of the DS? Where my hand is going to be right on top of it while I play? I feel paranoid I'm going to flip it accidentally with a single slip of my hand (Sort of how on the original DS how your thumb can slide right off the directional pad onto the power switch, luckily, I've never had a problem with that). =[ That's my biggest reason against getting a DS Lite, besides some other things I've seen in my brothers' DS's.

I mean, I'm not ruling the DS Lite out completely, but I'm curious as to the DSi's "added features" that may be available in B&W for example.

I'd personally recommend waiting a little while longer. I know you say you've waited pretty long already, but later this month we'll be learning more about the 3DS at E3. If it has all the DSi's features (especially the DSiWare library), wait for that; maybe get a used DS or DS Lite to tide you over in the meantime (I've never had any issues with the power slider, so I don't think you need to worry).

If that's not feasible, I'd say it depends on how you game. I usually play my DS at home, and when I do take it out I keep it in my backpack more often than in my pocket, so if I were to spring for a DSi, I'd go for the XL to take advantage of the better battery life and screen size (both systems' screens are larger than the DS's anyway, so there'll be resolution issues either way; from what I've heard, they aren't that bad). If, on the other hand, you carry your DS with you a lot, like Phalkon seems to, it'd probably be better to go for the smaller model.

And despite what some people say, the DSi is definitely a great system. I'm just not sure if it's great enough, given that the 3DS is coming up soon; a few months ago, I'd have recommended it, but now, I'd rather wait and see.

Nintendo saw that, it only turns off if you push it up completly, plus your hand is just going to slide over it unless you purposefully apply pressure, trust me, I just tried it.

DS>DSi>XL

DSi's just a rip-off of the original DS. Internet? Bleh. NO FLASH PLAYER. Camera? Bad-quality. Size? Could've included the GBA slot...

If you've got your heart set on a DSi, then I'd say go for the XL. I saw it at Best Buy the other day and I was in awe of how huge the screens are, since I'd never seen one in person till then. But! Japan just announced more colors for the XL for them, so you might want to wait and see if more colors are announced here [assuming you're in North America]. I think the burgundy and bronze [?] look hideous.

It depends. If you think portability is more important, go with the DSi, but if you like the bigger screens, go with the DSi XL. One thing that I can tell you is that I wouldn't recommend the DS lite, especially if you're not worried about migrating. Take it from someone who owns a DSi, the DSi and DSi XL are essentially the same system as each other, but they aren't the same as the DS lite. The DSi and XL are more than just a DS lite with a camera duct taped to it, they are a superior system with new features, bigger screens, and DSiWare. I wouldn't waste my money on an obsolete system like the lite. However, on that note, you should realize that the DSi is a stopgap before the 3DS much like what the GBC was before the GBA. We know that the 3DS will have all of the DSi's features, considering it will be backwards compatible with DSi games, so if you're willing to wait for the 3DS, I'd say wait.

DSi XL, or if you can wait, the 3DS. The DSi is just going to have the same durability issues, and the DS Lite is the same way without all the extra "sales gimmicks". The 3DS will probably have the same issues, but the addition of 3D and the fact that it's technically a new system entirely, with the added bonus of backwards comparability with the DS.
