Dugtrio: three moles or one?

While pondering various Pokémon who evolve by "multiplying" moreso than changing (such as Magneton and Weezing), I realized the oddity of Dugtrio. Diglett is already puzzling enough, since one never sees the part of its body underground. However, this is all the more confusing for Dugtrio.
Is Dugtrio a group of three large, angry-looking Digletts? Or is it one Diglett that grew two extra heads? And if it's the latter, could other parts of its unseen body--such as the tail and claws--have multiplied as well?

Discuss.

It's three digletts that seem to come together (and possibly are stuck).

GameFreak called it a new Pokemon as they are so much creative then they are now....

Diglet and Dugtrio's heads are just tiny tentacled extensions of a horrible, underground, eldritch, gigantic writhing mass of Lovecraftian horror. Why else do you think no one knows what they look like? You think someone owning them would find out easily by simply calling them out on a steel floor or the second story of some building.

The answer is that anyone who tried that is now horribly, gruesomely, dead or insane.

I always believed the dirt around them were legs disguised as dirt.

Yet Magneton gets away with the same thing because it's mechanical?

Wasn't there an eppy in which someone pulls up a Diglett?
I think that it's a single Diglett multiplying by three, as in it grows three heads. And in regards to other limbs, I would assume those stayed in the same quantity. Much like a Doduo growing a head, Diglett grows two extra heads during evolution.

The other possibilty, I read this fic once and in a Diglett decided it needed to evolve an opponent so another two came by and togther they morphed into one.

Well, originally I considered that they actually are seperate diglett who become one group after they reach a certain point in their training. Just basic partnership.

But after looking at pokedex entries it seems that the game view (the ever so consistant game view) is that two others spawn from the first. Therefore they are three seperate diglett but they all, originally at least, think in similiar ways.

Why is the group of three allowed in pokemon fights? Cause you can't seperate them.

My interpretation at least.

A better question is why Kangaskhan is allowed to run into battle with a baby in its freaking pouch.

Maybe the Joey really isn't a joey, but the real kangaskhan, and it pilots the bigger one like a gundam!

Also on dugtrio, it's not three digglets because each head is taller (and slightly different than a digglet). They probably are all connected.. or maybe the in ground the bodies vanishes below them...

It's like how Shellder transforms on becoming Slowbro or Slowking. The genetics are affected but three Diglett have to be around for the evolution to happen.

Bell alpha, the heads aren't taller, they just come out of the ground more than other times.

And a diglett doesn't necessarily need two others to evolve. It could. But not necessarily.

She's right. You came to the VERY wrong place to bash Pokémon. BACK TO SUBJECT!

How come in the anime, they never show Digletts getting caught, and more to the point, what they look like when released from a poké ball?

Perhaps a Dugtrio isn't simply three Digletts. My guess is that during evolution, it goes through the horrific process of getting two extra heads. Like a Dodrio.

Or maybe Zeta's right, and Diglett/Dugtrio are really Cthulu.
