Exacly what it sounds like:

BBC said:
Veteran games developer 3D Realms has closed down because of a lack of funds.

Founded in 1987, the firm popularised the concept of shareware gaming and published the seminal Duke Nukem and Wolfenstein 3D first-person shooters.

The company was working on a follow-up title, Duke Nukem Forever, which after being in development for 12 years has become the object of industry derision.

Publisher Take-Two says it will no longer fund development of the game but retains rights to the title.

"We can confirm that our relationship with 3D Realms for Duke Nukem Forever was a publishing arrangement, which did not include ongoing funds for development of the title," said Take-Two's Alan Lewis in a statement.

There has been no official comment from 3D Realms, other than a forum posting from the company's webmaster, Joe Siegler, who said: "It's not a marketing thing. It's true. I have nothing further to say at this time."

Other companies with links to 3D Realms or the Duke Nukem series were quick to distance themselves.

In a posting on Twitter, Apogee Software said it was "officially not affected by the situation at 3DRealms".

"Development of the Duke Nukem Trilogy is continuing as planned and further announcements about upcoming games will be made in the near future," the statement added.

Guardian newspaper games writer Steve Boxer said it was astonishing 3D Realms had not finished the game after more than a decade of development.

"It would have been nice to see another Duke Nukem game, but given they had more than 12 years it's just incompetence of the highest order.

"3D Realms made some great games in the past, but they got overtaken by the 21st Century.

"Sadly, Duke Nukem Forever was the most aptly named title in the history of games. Now, it's just Duke Nukem Never."

If it's been this long, I don't think anyone will mind if Duke Nukem never sees the light of day again.

Eh...I haven't played Duke Nukem since...well...probably since the last Duke Nukem game. Loved the old sidescrolling ones, and still have them. Guess they'll have to last me. And poor Wolfenstein.

Let's be serious though: did anyone honestly think DNF was ever going to release?

(on another note, I just now realized that "DNF" is an abbreviation in auto-racing for "did not finish" in the results of a race when a driver leaves the race early because their car is ruined in a crash or whatever...)

Wow, I was three when it started, and just now they decide not to make the game? Man, at least let the young people have some hope!

There are still 3 Duke Nukem games in development by Apogee studios. Duke Nukem will return.

Also, since Take Two owns the rights to Duke Nukem Forever, it's not necessarily the end for the game. They could hand the project over to a new studio who might take slightly less than 13 years to make it.

This is so hilarious!

The ironic part would be if some other company picked up the rights to Duke Nukem and created Duke Nukem Forever for 2010.

Oh, well,... there you go!

Exactly. It could take only twelve years for them to make it.

This news made me laugh. I mean, Duke Nukem Forever was In-Development Forever. I guess that means Wired Magazine now has to find a new First Place “Winner” for their annual “Vaporware Award”.

Everybody's said pretty everything I could say. I just think it's funny that people still had hope for this game over the years. I remember years back, I went into a Gamestop (may have not been Gamestop yet) and the guy was like "did you know Duke Nukem Forever is coming out at the end of the year?" That was pretty funny.

And then when was it... either last year or the year before, they came out with that new trailer, and everyone was freaking out and I was just *yawn*.

Honestly, I'm glad that this happened, because maybe this means that there actually will be a Duke Nukem Forever one day. As long as Jon St. John does the voice acting, I'll be happy. I'll be terrible at the game though because I haven't taken a FPS seriously since... well, Duke Nukem 3D. I just loved that game so much that nothing else could ever compare.

But just because Apogee has games in development doesn't mean we'll get DNF. I mean... I honestly don't know what 3D Realms was doing... they kept promising DNF but then we got Manhattan Project and all the console spin-offs (though Duke Nukem Advance was pretty good). Ahh well, at least this ironically good news!

Duke Nukem Forever WILL be released. It WILL. YOU GOTTA BELIEVE.

Duke still needs to park his bricks somewhere, and lack of funds will not stop him.
