So we all know about the actual Mew glitch, but when the first generation games were still fairly new did any of you hear any strange stories about ways to get Mew (or Johto Pokemon like Marill or Togepi who were introduced early in the anime)? Since Pokemon was the topic du jour every day in fourth and fifth grades it seems like everybody who claimed to have beaten the game had some strange story about how to get Mew.

I remember one where they said if you beat the Elite Four X number of times (I think it was 150) the S.S. Anne comes back and you find a Pokeball there that contains Mew or you battle it. One variant even had the S.S. Anne traveling to the Orange Islands and you could battle their league and find Mew there, or something.

Another had it where Mew was Professor Oak's reward for completing all 150 Pokemon in the original Pokedex.

What stories did you hear? (This also applies to strange Celebi/Jirachi/etc. stories from the later generations, I just remember more Mew ones since that was from when everyone I knew was into Pokemon and we were all talking about it.)

I heard if you caught all 150 pokemon, Bill would let you into his backyard, where you could catch Mew.

I wasn't into Pokémon at the time, so I'll just take one from TRsRockin.

Somehow obtain an HM called Ghost. This is done after the S. S. anne has sailed. Use ghost to scare away the guard who is blocking you. Surf and you will find Mew. If you catch it you can keep surfing and you will find team rocket and they have a giant robot that is near impossible to beat. If you do end up beating it, you will find that the guard called the cops because of your ghost menuever. You must go to the lab and talk to Prof. Oak before they catch you or it will delete your file.

The most common Jirachi/Deoxys rumor was that after a set number of rocket launches at the Mossdeep Space Center, the player could get one or both of them.

I have some that aren't specifically for obtaining Mew, but secret pokemon that were supposedly hidden in the game.

-Surf around the unknown dungeon until you find a note. Then talk to the traders on Cinnabar Island 100 times. They will give you a Pokegod called Flareth.

-First get Eevee, Flareon, Vaporeon and Jolteon. Go to Bill's Sea Cottage and use his PC 200 times. Talk to Bill and he'll give you Pikablu.

-Train a Nidoking to level 100, then talk to a Team Rocket member in Celadon City. Give him the Nidoking. He'll give you a set of keys for the SS Anne truck. Start the truck up and move it. Mew will be hidden in the spot where the truck was originally.

-Get a Pokemon that resembles a Digimon (Charmander for Agumon for example). Talk to ALL the people in Goldenrod city 30 times. Then go to the radio tower. There will be some Digimon tamers there and they will give you a Digimon egg.

...WTF

I also remember at school, when people were into Pokemon cards. There was a rumour that if you put two Pikachu cards together in the night, they'd "mate", and in the morning they'd be a Pichu card.

I'm not making this up.

My question is why is that other thread in the Pokemon World section, when it seems to focus almost exclusively on rumours about the Video Games?

Quite possibly the actual method that turned out true. Sounds so fake, but isn't.

The Bill's Backyard method always sounded the weirdest to me.

I got told if you mated a venasaur with a charizard you got a squirtle WTF?

First, what is the truck thing?

the mew one i heard, and someone posted a video on youtube of this:

Diamond/peral
defeat the E4, walk in and out of rowans lab 2 times then walk into grass and wala, mew

In R/B/Y, there was a random truck at the port in Vermilion... it was pretty much the ONLY decorative sprite that was only used in one place, so hundreds of fans made up fake "cheats" and posted them on Geocities. Supposedly the truck was related to getting Mew... the most popular rumor was "Use Strength on the truck to make it move and get Mew from under it", which couldn't be disproved for a while since you can't HAVE Strength at that point in the game, but trades and glitches managed to let fans test it- it was false. A while later the madness started again when there was supposedly a "key" to the truck somewhere, and that was a whole other wild goose chase. Along with the "Pokegods", a very consistent set of false information on a very specific set of imaginary ubers, the truck spread through the internet and real life like wildfire, and showed the importance of using sources on the internet and how quickly incorrect info can spread.

Yep, i remember geocities. Many people went on geocities, freewebs, tripod, angelfire, and sites like that, and made up loads of loads of Mew/Pikablu/Crystal Onix rumors. There were many other rumors too with other games.

Also, the truck was included in frlg too, but there is something in it this time.
