I am interested in getting the Pokemon anime on DVD, as kind of a nostalgic thing.
Any tips on where to begin? What set? etc.

Most of the series isn't on DVD boxset form yet.

The only boxsets thus far:

Kanto, Orange, Master Quest, Advance, Battle Frontier, and DP.

The first two Johto seasons were never released on DVD boxsets in the U.S.

For region 1 DVDs, check out Dogasu's Backpack. Probably the best-looking Pokémon DVD guide on the net.

Out of curiosity, are you looking into just the first years (in which case, just go with Indigo League volumes 1-3 and Orange Islands) or the whole series? If you only want to see a bunch of old episodes for nostalgia's sake and don't really care to see it all the episodes in chronologcal order, there's also the super-cheap Pokémon All-Stars set, a second volume of which is likely to come out at some point.

You could always have the Australian sets, (as long as you have a region free player).

Try typing Pokemon season boxsets in to ebay. Or use an Australian site to buy them.

I don't recommend getting the DVDs from Amazon, they are hideously overpriced and about the only online store whose prices are higher is the Viz store which sells them for nearly $40 a set! Personally, I recommend eBay for the first and second box sets since I was able to find them for $25 each and WalMart for the third Kanto set and the Orange Islands set since I was able to find them for $27 each. But that is good advice about the Super Wallet sets from Australia and New Zealand if you have an all region DVD player which supports the PAL TV system since those seem to be the best value. But for the majority of us here in the United States I would go for the region 1 Viz box sets.

Every time I've shopped on Amazon I've found their prices reasonable, and usually lower than any retail store in my town. If you buy all three Kanto sets together they are about 83 bucks -- about a dollar an episode. So yeah, they are slightly overpriced compared to some competitors, but I wouldn't say they were hideously overpriced.
