E. Coli Fears Lead To Beef Recall

It seems as if everything's being recalled nowadays. Don't people make sure their facilities are clean anymore?

What's especially nasty about E. Coli on beef is that it is transferred to the beef through the cow's droppings. Yeah, somehow the fecal matter makes it into the packaged product. I guess that says something about the conditions...

People are way too paranoid. first terrorist attacks, then the Avian flu, and now, recalled beef.

Yeah, people are paranoid. Which is why they aren't taking enough precautions when it comes to preparing food for sale.

I've actually read the cows eat the feces. Good times!

That probably does happen in feedlots, but it doesn't affect the meat. The E. Coli lives naturally (and harmlessly) in the cows' intestines and is released from the body through excrement - just like with humans. However, the strain of E. Coli is very dangerous to humans if ingested. That's what makes it so disgusting. The meat can only be contaminated with E. Coli bacteria in two ways: somebody deliberately placing the virus on the meat, or the meat coming into contact with cow feces before it is packaged. Now that's good eatin'!

Wait, could it happen at any store like Krogers or is it just the stores like Giant Eagle?
