What are your earliest memories of the franchise?

Here are some of mine from when I was around 4-6-

  • Watching the 1st season anime. (that's how I got into it in the first place)
  • My friend telling me they had a 'Pokémon Machine' that could 'make Pokémon' & me thinking they were being stupid if they thought I would believe that, so I told them to 'go make me an Eevee then'.
  • Going to see the 1st movie and getting my Mewtwo card. Seeing Snubbull and Marill and immediately wanting them. Seeing Donphan for the first time and thinking it was the strangest thing ever.
  • Wishing for a Bulbasaur when blowing out the candles for my 5th birthday (with a Pikachu cake).
  • Getting my 'Ash hat'. (Then over 10 years later having it signed by Veronica Taylor.)
  • Getting my first pack of base set trading cards and being disappointed that my rare was 'Scoop Up' instead of a Pokémon.
  • Going to the newsagents almost daily to get new Pokémon stickers, gum with tattoos, the Pokéballs with the figures/sweets inside and Topps cards.
  • Going on holiday and bringing my Pikachu plush everywhere with me, including up the Giant's Causeway.
  • Playing RBY on a friend's flashcart. Playing Yellow on my other friend's official cart.
  • My friend referring to Missingno as 'a creepy shadow guy'.
  • Going to see the 2nd movie with my primary school and thinking Lugia was called 'Mewgia' and evolved from Mew for some reason.
  • Getting Silver for Christmas. Finally finding out what 'deposit' meant when I needed space for the Togepi egg.
  • Being told that in Crystal (before it was out) you could catch 'a crystal Onix and a crystal Sandslash'.

If I can think of anything else I'll add it in later.

-watching the anime at my grandma's house and eventually finding it on Kids WB at home

-reading the official pokemon handbook (like the OP, mine fell apart too lol)

-trying to teach my thoroughly unwilling parents all about every Pokemon

-getting my first game (Ruby) in 4th grade

-drawing in a Pokemon coloring book

-playing with my Pika plush

I probably saw a lot of the franchise when I was in first grade and the franchise was all the rage, but my first clear memory of the franchise was looking at an ad in a kids' magazine for Pokemon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea. I saw the strange people and the strange animal-like creatures and thought, "Sheesh, that looks so weird."

Little did I know that franchise was going to define my life for the next decade.

After watching my friend play the games, I decided I wanted to play them as well. So, I bought an official Gen III pocket Pokedex and learned it practically by heart.

I was like 10 when yellow came out so this is kind of... age of the dinosaur stuff, sorry X3

- trading with connector cables (omg)
- the little light we had to use before screens were backlit
- the first movie was a HUGE deal
- scouring the flea market for pokemon cards
- and for some reason the specific episode where all the clefairies find the moonstone and evolve into clefables together

bonus: the first time I used pokemon amie my inner 10-year-old almost peed on herself she was so happy

I still remember the very first TV ad from 1998. I didn't think much of it until I got a gameboy color and the Blue version for Christmas 3 months later. My brother got the Red version and we traded games because blue was his favorite color.

my first pokemon memory was watching the episode where ash catches treecko on TV and then later that day going to woolworths, finding a reecko figure with a tailow and begging my mum to by me it, i also had the offical pokemon handbook and enjoyed it thoroughly, more memories include winning a pokedex on ebay, watching the second pokemon movie at my grandma's and going on holiday and being giving a torchic plushie, and on many holidays buying pokemon figures most of which i have to this day. On a side note i became friends with many new people i met on holidays through pokemon. these are some of my pokemon memories and i hope in the future i will have many more

I always held the link cable into the slot because I was moderately terrified of it falling out mid-trade.

SAME. I remember the day my friend and I decided to evolve our haunters into gengars... it was the first time we ever used the link cables and we were so terrified.

Getting my Pokemon Blue Cartridge to go with my blue-green Gameboy Color

Starting off with Bulbasaur since I was curious of what it evolves into since I already saw Charizard and Blastoise among other reasons.

Getting the official handbook deluxe edition

Getting the Gold/Silver strategy guide which helped me get out of the Ice Path

Getting my pokemon diamond game- later that day i had a friend from school round and i literally abandoned her to sit in my room, by myself, playing pokemon. I still feel kinda bad about that now!

My earliest was probably anime-related. The very first glimpse of the anime that I had were bits and pieces of the episode when Tracey's future Scyther cuts off Jesse's hair. I remember the commercials for the anime as well(along with the Digimon commercials too, and because of that I would get the two shows confused with each other).

> Spending all my tickets I won at an arcade on a pack of Pokemon cards only to cry when I found out they were just info cards. Can't remember how long ago this was, but it's easy for me to remember.

> Going to the local card shop to hunt for "rare" Pokemon cards. Somewhat generic, but my friends and I would always ask our parents to go there and we would spend a long time just looking at what they had to offer.

> My friend and I trading all the time with our copies of Ruby and Sapphire while helping each other evolve our Pokemon.

Playing Red on my friend's Gameboy, and swapping my DS with her when I got one just so I could play Pokémon. All I did was just stay in one patch of grass training, although one time I started a new game but didn't save it.

Getting extremely excited when I found out that my uncle had a copy of Sapphire he wasn't interested in, so he gave it to me.

Talking to a boy at my primary school and him thinking I was really cool for liking Pokémon.

Weirdly, I don't actually remember much about my first game (Diamond), except that I only used two Pokémon for the whole game and they got very overleveled.

Going to my cousin's house when I was 8 our 9 (1998/9), seeing his Pokemon mouse pad and asking him about it. That mouse pad changed my life.

- The first anime season I remember watching was Johto, when I was 3. Fell in love with it.

- Going to Blockbuster (omg what's that) and renting the three starter episodes from Season 1 and watching them 20 times in my grandmas house.

- Getting Firered in Grade 1 and falling in love.

And much much more.

Sometime in 2006, I bought my first game with my own money, and it was my first Pokemon game too- Pokemon Diamond.

Three things I can still remember...

Running home from school everyday just to watch the anime
Waking up early Saturday morning for new episodes
(it's what got me into Pokemon)

The handbook, loved seeing it over and over, not sure what happened to mine, I think it stayed in California when I moved back to Seattle in 2001.

When my parents went to Target, Walmart, or Kmart - I would always be in the Pokemon isles - seeing all the toys and merchandise, and left the store saddened when I couldn't buy anything (I was about 11 or 12 years old back then)

I really really wish I could find my handbook :/ I used to take it everywhere

My cousin coming over and putting Pokemon on. I recall Ash battling a Seadra in the league(?)
