What kind of hip hop do you prefer out of the two?

East Coast

VS

West Coast

I love quite a few albums from both sides, but if I were to rank them, East Coast would win by a mile.

Gulf Coast, baby!

To give an answer that's not a joke, however, it's definitely East Coast for me, hands down. The West Coast attitude, to me, is just sorta obnoxious and playboy-like whereas a lot of East Coast talents like A Tribe Called Quest, Big L, Gang Starr, and Nas put a lot more thought into their rhymes. To be fair, this East Coast-West Coast mentality is only an illusion and so of course there are West Coast rappers who wrote really insightful lyrics like Tupac, and on the other side of that coin there are also East Coast rappers who are just here to brag and stroke their egos, like Jay-Z.

I think I'd have to go with East Coast myself as well although this relates more to to familiarity.

When it comes to East Coast rappers like Nas, Public Enemy, 50 cent, Wu-Tang Clan, The Notorious B.I.G., Lil' Kim, Ja Rule, Eve, Busta Rhymes, Fugees, Fat Joe, and many more are all names I can immediately recognize. With some of my favorites being Eve, Fat Joe, Lil' Kim, Public Enemy, amongst others.

West Coast wise I know there's Snoop Dogg, Dr.Dre, 2Pac, Game, and Kendrick Lamar but not many of them stand out. Sure there's rappers like Ice Cube but I recognize him more for his movie roles than I do his rapping.

I do like various artists/albums from the west and east coasts though. :p

Where rappers came from doesn't really matter to me, but what DOES matter is WHEN it came out. The 90's will ALWAYS have the best quality hip-hop. Biggie and Tupac come to mind, obviously.

In the old days I definitely would have sided with East over West. But it was definitely close.

Now... it's different.

My favorite current rappers are Kendrick (West Coast), Yeezus (born in Atlanta but really grew up in Chicago), Lupe Fiasco (also born in Chicago), and Eminem (Detroit). Really, rap has become a national art form, rather than just East vs West (with Dirty South coming in during the nineties / early 00s). In the early 00's, Atlanta alone was putting out more bangers than East or West, with Outkast, T.I, Ludacris, Nelly, Lil Jon and Young Jeezy all in their primes. It becomes a slaughter when you add in the other Southern cities, giving you Lil Wayne, Trick Daddy, Juvenile, Chamillionaire, Rick Ross, Paul Wall, Mike Jones...

My point is that the East Coast v West Coast debate was no longer relevant to current artists by the time most of us were born (or at least at music listening age). But in the classic East vs West (which was really Pac vs Biggie with the rest picking sides to rep their coast), I'd pick East in a narrow victory over West.

Nowadays it is meaningless, there is no real divide now. I think different sections of the U.S. breeds distinct types of hip-hop i.e Chicago drill, but really with the advent of the Internet you can be from wherever and make the music you want without regards to location.

Going back to the nineties, East Coast I feel delivered better albums, if I was to make a top ten list of best 90s albums it'd really be about 70/30 in favour of East Coast. I feel that the East has aged better and it's classics are still classics.

WEAST COAST, BABY!

I'm not completely joking. I actually like a little bit of both. I love a shitload of 80s and 90s East Coast stuff, but hey, I can't say West Coast didn't have good rap and hip hop, either! I'm not ashamed to admit I love Snoop Dogg (I hate his Snoop Lion moniker) and Coolio.

It's a moot point nowadays, but being a Jersey native, I've gotta stick with my "local team," as it were.

Though ironically, a lot of my favorite hip-hop artists like Atmosphere, Eyedea & Abilities, and Brother Ali come from the Midwest. I blame Rhymesayers. I've also got a lot of good things to say about Aesop Rock, Wu-Tang, and Nas for the East Coast.

Not exactly a huge rap fan, but West Coast I suppose, since Mike Shinoda is from there.

East Coast FTW! I'm a proud New Yorker, and I like the cities that are with the East Coast. Although, I'm not a big fan over hip hop.
