Lately it seems there's been some conflict regarding users who edit just for the sake of adding spaces to the article. Not spaces in the sense that "Maddy Blaustein is a voice actress. She's dead" becomes "Maddy Blaustein is a voice actress. She's dead," but more adding a space between paragraphs. To make the article look better and "easier to edit."

So, is this a good idea or not?

Apparently I'm the only person who thinks that, if a user sees a way to better-format an article, they should do it--within reason.

I think, though, you guys are referring to something in specific that I'm unaware of.

Ah well.

Yeah, a couple of people are going around doing nothing but adding a single line in one article at the time. It isn't really adding anything if you know what I mean.

Well if there are more than one instances, it might be worth stringing up a few of these space-edits and other small mistakes and calling it a minor edit. Basically, if it's only one spacing error, screw it, but if the article needs multiple fix-ups in grammar and spaces then sure why not.

What 'Deth said. If you're already editing the page to fix or add something else, go ahead and add spaces where needed. If you really, really want to add spaces, at least find something else worth fixing on the article, like an e-acute or a spelling mistake, so everybody's happy.

No. Contributing to make contributing easier for other users to edit is just like saying "I'm too lazy to edit it. You do it."

Ah well.

I think it is a bit more specific.

It's not adding spaces to make the article formatting look better, it's adding spaces/newlines that are only visible in the edit window so that it's easier to edit the page. It serves no purpose to the actual article on the outside, simply makes it "easier to edit". (and boosts your edit count considerably without you needing to do any real edits.)

It's a good idea on the net it helps to break it up a bit and makes it easier to read. Although the net is the only place where it is done, in books (novels) the are no gaps between paragraphs. this is probably down to eye strain.
[hello]
I do think it would be a good idea to but again the is no point in editing just to do it. So to answer the question NO.

I do like the gap and wish people would use one on the forums especially, the amount of times I don't read a post because it just a block of text is insane.

But, as I've already said, it's only visible in edit pages and does not affect the articles themselves. It's just a different way of saying "Too lazy, you do it."

mje89: Having spaces between paragraphs is standard for IT writing. That's not the issue here. This thread is about people making edits to the tune of Magnedeth's example above. That doesn't change anything in how the actual article looks.

I also do tinker like that, especially when there are all manners of templates and categories and language links at the bottom of articles, but only when I'm making relevant edits in those areas anyway. I'm with the consensus: An edit just for that is pointless.

But the edit feels kinda empty if you know what I mean. I mean I could edit thousands of articles to "make it look better" and become top contributor of the month for adding a space.
