I'm currently rewatching through Diamond and Pearl and just got to DP035 (An Elite Meet and Greet) and it struck me as interesting the explanation that was given as to the process for facing the Elite Four "If you're from Hoenn, you have to have won the Hoenn league; if you're from Johto, you have to have won the Johto league...". Now immediately afterwards Dawn deduces "Win here and you can challenge the Elite Four?", which Lucian answers yes to.

Now to me, the initial explanation seems to imply that, for example, Ash would need to win the Indigo League and battle that Elite Four, at the very least to do that first before being able to challenge the other Elite Fours, because he's from Kanto. The followup question simply gives the more logical answer that anyone beating any league challenges that region's Elite Four, but it seems odd to me the wording emphasising that if you're from a particular place you need to win that league.

Am I reading too much into that or just a quirk in the translation? Because otherwise it seems like there's little gained from travelling all around the Poke-world to win all the other leagues if you need to have success at home first.

I know it doesn't make much sense to go with a literal interpretation, he could just be meaning that you can't challenge a different region's elite four unless you've won that local Pokemon league - but a lot of emphasis was placed on 'home' league in the explanation.

It might just be something that Lucian does. He might consider your home league the most important one to beat because that's what he did, or something.

I don't think it matters where you are from. Ash took the effort to travel to all of these regions get the gym badges and challenge the pokemon league. If would have won a league, even if not his 'home' league it really shouldn't matter. For nastalgia sake though would be nice if Ash challenged the kanto elite 4.

People keep misinterpreting this. Just win the regional League and you can face their Elite Four.

Yes, it has been mentioned several times throughout DP that one can officially challenge a region's Elite Four after winning a regional competition. I don't see why it would not be the case for any of the other regions with their own Elite Four.

I certainly recognise that, but my point is that it was a very odd choice of words if that was the intended meaning, I don't know how you could call it a misinterpretation to take literally a fairly straightforward statement. Yes, he gives the 'correct' answer to Dawn's question, but that's still at odds with his initial statement.

Why the multiple references to 'home' regions if it doesn't matter?

One thing for sure, Paul, Ash, Gary and Barry (xD) can re-challenge the leagues because they already have the eight badges. Ash can go back and win Indigo and Hoenn and Sinnoh anytime they host a league challenge. Althrough i have few doubts if he won all hoenn badges.

Yeah, I think you just have to win a region competition and you can then challenge the elite 4 of that region. Doubt it has to be your home region. However, I imagine that unless you manage to defeat the Elite 4 you'd have to win the competition in other regions as well if you wanted to challenge their elite 4's.

It's same as a Gym battle
Think about it, Why a Trainer has to win 8 badge ?
To prove himself/herself wealthy for entering League conference
The same way, A trainer has to prove himself/herself Wealthy to enter Champion league by wining the Champion league
After all, wining 8 badge doesn't prove a trainer Wealthy to be in champion league because more then 200 trainer enter
league conference every year
About Lussian
When he mean home region, he might mean that a trainer want to enter surden region's Champion League then He/She must win That Region's League conference
Plus, the hole ''Home Region" might be a Dub error

If Ash won the Sinnoh league he would have faced the Sinnoh Elite 4 and Cynthia.

If Ash goes back to the Indigo league and wins, he's face Lance and the Kanto Elite 4.

I don't see why this is so complicated.

I'm not trying to say it is complicated, I'm wondering why there was a conversation in an episode that fairly unambiguously contradicts every other answer to the Elite Four question. It's a fairly large mistranslation if that was the case and no one so far has mentioned how that scene goes in the original Japanese episode.
