I'm currently rewatching through Diamond and Pearl and just got to DP035 (An Elite Meet and Greet) and it struck me as interesting the explanation that was given as to the process for facing the Elite Four "If you're from Hoenn, you have to have won the Hoenn league; if you're from Johto, you have to have won the Johto league...". Now immediately afterwards Dawn deduces "Win here and you can challenge the Elite Four?", which Lucian answers yes to.
Now to me, the initial explanation seems to imply that, for example, Ash would need to win the Indigo League and battle that Elite Four, at the very least to do that first before being able to challenge the other Elite Fours, because he's from Kanto. The followup question simply gives the more logical answer that anyone beating any league challenges that region's Elite Four, but it seems odd to me the wording emphasising that if you're from a particular place you need to win that league.
Am I reading too much into that or just a quirk in the translation? Because otherwise it seems like there's little gained from travelling all around the Poke-world to win all the other leagues if you need to have success at home first.
I know it doesn't make much sense to go with a literal interpretation, he could just be meaning that you can't challenge a different region's elite four unless you've won that local Pokemon league - but a lot of emphasis was placed on 'home' league in the explanation.
