I was playing in that dome thing inside the battle frontier in emerald and looking at my opponents. I saw a sailor named Patrick and instantly thought Spongebob Squarepants . Then I thought about him having a Staru and then I said "Naww". And guess what? He had a Staru! What a coinsidence.

There was a Hal and Lois (the names of the parents on Malcolm in the Middle) in R/S/E as well (as a Young Couple). I guess NOA just decided to stick a bunch of pop culture references in that game, for some reason.

There is a good chance that it is indeed a pop culture reference. There are quite a few in the games and an exponential increase in D/P where they purposefully included a huge amount of internet culture!

One of the translators for Diamond and Pearl, if I recall correctly, is a regular at Something Awful, so it was bound to occur that numerous Internet references manifest within the game.

Not only the "noob" incident. Yes I think the translators added most of the references in for the english version. I hope the same team/translator works on Platinum!

Wasn't Game Freak threatened with a lawsuit about that? The names were changed in Emerald.

That's retarded on so many levels, how could you sue them over a pop culture reference? Regardless whether the lawsuit was legit or not, why would you want to take another company to court over something like that? It's an advertisement/homage for/to their show, why would you want to complain about that? It's an acknowledgment of their cult status and popularity, in a sense an indirect compliment.

If you could sue people over pop culture references then family guy would so be sued.

Anyways that's ironic, eh?

Yeah, that's what I thought. Family Guy, Simpsons, South Park and pretty much any other satirical show would be screwed if that was the case.

Plus, Hal and Lois are NAMES. Hell, my brother used to have this page a day calendar of cats and one day had a fluffy kitty belonging to a couple called- I kid you not- Brock and Misty.

So learning Karate from the internet is a reference from what?

I remember in Iron Island a couple of people:
Black Belt Kendal and Battle Girl Tyler would like to battle!
(i think it was supposed to be Black Belt Tyler and Battle Girl Kendal.)

This is not a reference. The Pokemon in Battle Frontier are random. The Battle Frontier trainers don't have teams like normal trainers, they have Pokemon randomly chosen from Battle Frontier Pokemon (well, there's certain range of Pokemon belonging to one trainer, but still, it's not always the same range). So, it is a pure coincidence, not an intended reference.

How can Game Freak be sued for NoA translators' crimes?
