English Dubs on Japanese DVDs

I'm wondering - which DVDs have the English dubs on them in Japan?

And, if I was to order the first movie on DVD from Japan, would I be ale to watch it in Japanese with English subs that AREN'T the lines 4Kids used, instead an actual translation?
 
The DVDs for movies 1 to 3 should have the English dub on them. But it's the 4Kids dub, of course. (The reason why it's there in the first place is because the DVDs were created after the English dub was finished.)
 
Unfortunately, you can't even watch with the 4Kids English subs and Japanese sound, with the way they're set up. At least, that's my experience with the 3rd movie DVD. There might be some program which can split the streams so you can do it, but I haven't found one.
 
Are those discs from the new boxset? Also, does the dub track use the music they made, or the original music?
 
I'm wondering...do the Japanese even want to watch an English dub?
 
I meant I wanted real subs, not "I haven't blah blah since I last tried putting up a personal ad" or whatever other crap 4Kids decided to make the characters say...so, the Japanese DVDs don't have 'em?
 
I want both, but I don't want them to be 4Kids subs...

The dub is great, but I also like the original - I can watch the dub when I'm with my brothers and dad who happens to like pre-AG stuff who won't watch anything that isn't English, and when I'm alone the sub.
 
Since the 4Kids dub is licensed here in the states, I don't know if the Japanese company would go to all the trouble of securing those tracks for their DVDs, especially since their customer base consists of Japanese kids, primarily. Why would they want to watch it in English? As a general rule, the Japanese are very linguistic, especially in English, but that only comes into play around high school and college age, for the most part. :p And a lot of Japanese don't get into college or even high school. Shoot, some of them don't even learn all of their own language's Kanji (Chinese characters), so learning another language is out of the question.

That being said, unless the Japanese company who's licensed these DVDs is planning on marketing them here in the states (for which they'd have to get 4Kids' permission, since they own the U.S. license, believe it or not), they don't have much incentive to add on the English tracks, although it's possible they might put on English subtitles, if they put a lot of time into them.
 
Has this DVD boxset turned up with any English-language retailers, on or offline yet? I haven't come across anything regarding it in an online search.. A pokemon movie box set would be fantastic, though. I've always loved the movies, even when the show gets a little "eh". It'd be especially nice to replace confusing multi-release VHS tapes, and, of course, for snagging little things like bonus features...!

Honestly, I'd just like to see Birth of Mewtwo subbed. I've never seen a fansub release of it, I'd love ot know what the original dialogue is.


EDIT: Gekijoban Pocket Monsters Pikachu the Movie Box ...that seems to be it! Comes out this September in two six-disk sets. Only CDJapan seems to have an english language site for ordering, and it's quite expensive, though a number of Japanese-only ones have a 20% off sale going on.

Expensive? Those DVD boxsets are dirt cheap!
 
Mm --comparitively cheap if you were looking at importing or purchasing the DVDs individually, or tracking down VHS tapes on ebay, but still, $175 bucks is a wad of money to put down for anything. I always say, if it costs me more than a toonie, it's something I need to mull over first.

So I guess that means a small amount of people in Japan have actually seen the Pokemon English dub. That's pretty cool.
 
I think a lot of them are familiar with the English dub, actually. Blackjack mentioned Pokemon de English earlier, which was a segment that played at the end of Pokemon Encore (a re-running of the first series, which I think got replaced by Weekly Pokemon Station, then Pokemon Sunday). I have a couple clips of Pokemon de English, and apparently, it teaches kids an English phrase by playing a short scene from the foreign version.

A lot more Japanese anime fans seem to be familiar with American censorship than you'd think. One time on Pokeani's message board, someone posted video clips comparing "The Rival Enters! Masamune and Danball!!"/"Less is Morrison" (the scenes where Masamune and Rocket Dan's onigiri were replaced with a sandwich and cracker respectively). I also saw Japanese fan art referencing the edits in One Piece. Probably also worth mentioning that Sonic the Hedgehog games are more or less the same everywhere in the world (being released around the same time... Sonic's a bit of an international project), so they have access to English voice-overs just as we have access to Japanese voice-overs (I wonder if anyone there stirred as much of a commotion when 4kids replaced the actors).

The DragonBall Dragonbox has a feature making fun of the American censoring of the seriesby showing how certain scenes were changed in the American dub, like the one where Bulma uses her panties to fish for Oolong after he transforms into a fish, and the dub changed the panties into a wad of dollars.
 
To jump waaay back up to the top of the page -- a toonie is Canadian currency, a two-dollar coin consisting of a large metal ring with a gold center featuring the queen on one side, and a polar bear (or in some cases, family of polar bears) on the other...the Queen with a "bear" behind. *snicker*

Basically, if something going to cost me more than a cup of tea, I need to think about it, justify it, and make it fit my budget. ^^
