I was just playing the game and someone wants to trade. That's cool, so I say OK and they show me a Japanese Lv 100 Shiny Arceus. I know I have nothing comparable so I show one of my better pokemon, which of course gets rejected. Then he shows me the Arceus again.

The thing is, this happens all the time. People wanting to trade Lv 100 legendaries, often shiny. What are they up to? Are they all hacked? What do they expect me to trade them?

As a secondary question, I love GTS and Wondertrade but I've never got the hang of trading pokemon manually with people unless they are in the same room as me. Maybe my etiquette is wrong. Do you have any tips you can share?

Looking forward to seeing the replies to this post, maybe you should change the title though so people know what this is about.

Some may have been obtained through events or whatnot, though a lot of those Pokemon are most likely hacked. It's possible that they're just trying to show off their collection...I've never had any luck trading from random trade requests online so I never accept them >.>

Hmm just try communicating as if you're talking to the person in real life, be generally calm and polite when working on the deal. Which is why random trade requests are difficult since you're being thrown into it with hardly any means of communication :/

You can check out our Trade Station and see if there's anything that interests you, we're a friendly bunch here so it shouldn't be much of a problem :p Best of luck!

Thanks for the suggestion. It looks like I can't edit the title but if a moderator would like to help me out then how about "Etiquette in trading online"

It's nice to hear others have the same problem with random trading requests. I see what you are saying about communication. Even something minimal like on the GTS would help. I will make a point of stopping by the trade boards and have a look there.

Changed your thread title for you.

I havent had luck with random trade requests myself, either its people showing off shiny legendaries or people begging to be traded shiny Pokemon. I might just avoid them. Its better if you arrange a trade with someone if you're able to.

I usually don't do random trades but incase someone desperately wants to trade (as in spam requests) I got some pokemon with nicknames to communicate ready. There is one named "What u want" and one "LF ☆/Event" to show him my wants. Mostly these people aren't prepared for this though so I don't know what they want.
Most of the times though I have already planned the trade with the other person beforehand, so it goes by nice and easy. I still have a pokemon named "Check chat" to show my partner that I need to talk to him. This usually works out pretty good.

What you mentioned, with the other guy showing the same Pokemon to you, seems like a very common thing. The person attaches a value to the thing they want to trade, and will take nothing less than what they think it's worth. While it makes sense not to trade an Arceus for just anything, I believe that people who get aggressive and kind of snooty with their trades are poor sports.

Going back to your situation, if that Arceus was the only one I had (I have two or three in real life), why the heck would I offer to trade it for anything else? Arceus is pretty rare Pokemon, and I would most definitely want to keep it for my own Pokedex for future games. It seems to me that the person had a clone (possibly several) and was trying to scam people into trading away something thats value has just decreased exponentially.

This is the problem with anonymous trading. You don't know the integrity of the other person. Yes, there are good people out there willing to do fair trades, but there are also a lot of people that think "oh, this is a Reshiram, which I have three of. I won't take anything less than a version mascot for each one!" This is why when it comes to trading, I find it best to set up the trade beforehand. The forums here have been pretty damn good to me with regards to that. Yes, it defeats the purpose of online trading, but it makes the reward more equal to the risk otherwise.

Now on to Wondertrade etiquette. This form of trading is essentially a lottery. You make a wager (the Pokemon you're trading), and in turn you win something. Sometimes you win big (I got a Ho-Oh once) and sometimes you win small (Slurpuff). Other times you downright lose (caterpie, bunnelby, bad IV breed rejects, etc). That's the nature of it. The most you can do is be the bigger person and offer something decent. Another thing you can do is Wonderchain, where you keep trading off whatever you get via trade until you find something you like. It's really an unfix-able mess.

I don't really have much else to say in terms of what I believe to be good trade etiquette, so for sake of those who are just gonna TL;DR this post, I'll sum it up as simply and concise as I can: Don't be a dick.

"Etiquette" and "online" tend to not go together often. I'm pretty sure your average passer-by either likes trolling others with their collection, showing off, or both.

As a couple people have mentioned, nicknaming Pokemon to convey messages like "No" or what you're looking for can be helpful if you happen to come across someone who isn't just a random jerk. One rare occasion, you'll meet someone like you; legitimate, looking for actual fair exchange, willing to act normally, and these encounters can be highly profitable. I once got a WISHMKR Jirachi and several other good trades from one reasonable, friendly passerby. So, more than half the time, most difficulties can be blamed on the other guy, not you, if you're just looking for a good deal and not showing off like a little prat with a big ego.

Of course, I think it's easier to avoid the luck-based mission of finding someone who's not a duck and just post requests or offers on forums like this. Then, you're pretty much guaranteed to find someone who won't just spam you, tease you with legends, or otherwise act like a jerk.

Trust me here. That Level 100 shiny Arceus was never gonna get traded anyway, no matter what you offered. People just show that kind of thing to show off and troll others with that collection. That's why I cancel trades if someone shows me something like that.

It's not you - it's the other dude.

Normally I reject trades that random people request since all they want is ether a shiny and I don't have a shiny Pokemon that I want to trade, want to just show off their legendary Pokemon, or want a legendary Pokemon. I had even seen people ask for Hoopa and Volcainin. There is one time a year ago someone randomly traded me a Jirachi and a shiny Shaymin, not really caring what Pokemon he got in return, I was really happy about that trade. Both Pokemon are legit.

GTS on the other hand, it's just full of kids placing Pokemon on there and asking for legendary Pokemon while trading a Pokemon like a Catterpi and a Bunnelby. I almost never use GTS now since I have a mostly filled Pokedex.

I really like the idea of using pokemon names as pre-canned messages. I'm going to put some together.

Hmm, I gotta admit, I've been guilty of catching First-Route Pokemons (The weak low-level ones you meet on your first Route) just for the purpose of Wonder Trading them in hopes of getting something good.

That's OK if it's the start of your game but there is an infinite supply of pokemon on every route. Why not just catch something wherever you happen to be and throw it on wondertrade?

Although I had experienced reasonable trades mostly, there were definitely people showing off their shiny legendary collection. I've seen quite a few. I just cancel the trade since there's no point wasting time looking at the other person boasting.

GTS and WonderTrades are mostly just lotteries. I did manage to get a few shinies off GTS either by lucky chance or by a generous someone. Wondertrade is the same.

There was one time that I hit a jackpot. The other trader wanted to trade legendaries with me, and if I remember correctly, he (The avatar and name were masculine, so I'm going to assume the trader was a 'he'.) wanted to trade one of his Gen 4 legendaries with me. However, at the time, I only had a Xerneas and a Celebi with me, and the latter he already had. He accepted my Xerneas, and thus helped me start a long chain of trading with, and filling the dex entries of, what eventually turned into all of the Gen 4 legendaries. :D

Because they're low-leveled and easy to catch. I can just use a moderately well-trained Pokemon with False Swipe, and it never cost me more than one PokeBall/Pokemon.

Yes, I'm evil that way.

A level 100 shiny anything is a huge red flag and an immediate disconnect from me.

Two nights ago, someone was showing off their level 10 hacked legendary Pokemon. I just stopped the trade because those Pokemon were hacked and it's pointless.

It's like they expect you to be envious of their action replay
