I'm a newbie competitive battler preparing my first team. I'm trying to EV train one of my 'mons, but the results are surprising me.

Meet Kilgore, my Archen, whom I'm EV training for a 252 Atk/252 Spd build. As the pic shows, he hasn't been trained since hatching from his egg, and he's infected with Pokerus.

I started training Kilgore on Route 1 for his Attack EVs. Lo and behold, a Patrat appeared. Sorry for the terrible image quality.

I swapped in a bigger bird to take care of the Patrat, and this was the stat boost Kilgore received when he leveled up:
D2Bd7

I know that the Patrat should give 1 Atk EV upon fainting, but I've got all these other boosts going on. Are the other stat growths the result of leveling up (with the EV being hidden) or is Pokerus messing around with my EV training?

I suspect it's the former, in which case I'm being a total n00b, but I don't want to mess up my Archen--he's got IVs of 31 in both Attack and Speed.

Each Patrat will give 2 Attack EVs to your Pokemon since your Pokemon has Pokerus, which doubles all gained EVs.

Pokerus DOUBLES the amount of EVs a 'mon gains per battle--the power items you get from the Battle Subway (for 48BP each) adds FOUR EVs to the number of you gain per battle. So if a Patrat gives one Atk EV, combined with Pokerus and the Power Bracer, you gain SIX EVs. Because 1 x 2 = 2, and 2 + 4 = 6.
For EV training you will need to do your maths.

No, with the Power Bracer+Pokerus you gain 10 EVs per Patrat. It adds on the 4 from the Bracer to the original 1 EV THEN doubles it to 10.

Thanks for the information about EV training. However, I want to know whether the stat growth in all areas is a result of the Pokemon leveling up, and if Pokerus promotes this stat growth in all areas.

The stat growth in all the other areas is normal, don't worry. Your pokemon gains stats based on it's base stats in addition to the Effort Value points you gain for battling specific pokemon. Every four EVs equals one point of stat gain, though I've found that these stats don't come to you all at once but are rather distributed over the course of your training.

In HGSS, I trained a Dragonite with Pokerus and a Power Bracer with around 252 Attack EVs in one level and I gained +15 stats of Attack. When I did something similar in Black with a Leafeon I found the maximum stat increase was +5, though I noticed it did more +4 and +5 attack every level as opposed to +2 or +3 when raising other Leafeon without special attention to EVs. I'm raising it to 100 and it's on track to have the maximum attack possible so at least I know the EVs worked.

Regardless of how it happens, you'll see your effort values pay off in the long run so long as you work on the right areas. The rest of the stats happen naturally.
(But if you mess up, you can always reset the stats with the stat reducing berries from the Dream World. That Dragonite was actually retrained after I realized I accidentally trained Sp. Atk. but the berries cleared it right up even after I hit the Max 510 EVs)

The difference in stat gains between Dragonite and Leafeon probably has something to do with their individual base stats. Dragonite has a base Attack of 134, whereas Leafeon's base Attack is 110. An Adamant Dragonite with 252 Attack EVs will reach an attack stat of 403 at level 100, but a similar Leafeon's attack stat will max out at only 350. 53 stat points is quite a difference.

Thanks very much, Raine. I lent my Power Bracer to a friend, and he's still got it--so perhaps I'll just train someone else instead.

No Problem. You're welcome Jennasect ^^

True, I realize the difference though what I aimed to point out was how visible the results are after a level of EV training. For Dragonite, the gain was very apparent after one level whereas training Leafeon in one level, the gain was not as apparent. I trained a Leafeon in Diamond and I saw a +7 attack gain there too, but in Black I never saw a gain over +5.

I just wanted to show EV trainers that the results will happen even if it may not seem like it will.
