I just started playing gen IV after playing up to silver quite a few years ago. After comming back i now have a bit better understanding of game mechanics and such i didnt have when i was younger. My question is this whole "ev" training thing, how important is it? Am i going to be rolled by teams who ev train or will it only make a slight difference? ie not gamebreaking.

Any info on this would be apreciated as im still geting aquainted with gen IV

You will get rolled over. The other pokemon will be faster, stronger, albeit a bit frailer, or will be sturdier than you would be able to break through that being said, start out with out Eving, then slowly move in on EVing. Obviously dont EV train in-game, you dont need to. All in all, the right evs will decide the game alot of the time.

what do you mean dont ev train in-game? I thought it was all about breeding the right nature, useing thoes battle frontier leveling items and a few other things. im not sure i understand what all EV training involves

in-game refers to the main story of the game. EV train for competitive play and the frontier.

Also, this could have gone in the simple questions thread.

Every 4 EVs on a particular stat will raise it by 1. There is a maximum of 255 EVs on one stat and an overall maximum of 510 meaning that maxing out your EVs on one stat will give that stat +63 which is a pretty big difference.

If you dont start properly EV training your pokemon at the beginning of the game, then you may wanna stock up on those EV-lowering berries so you can fix up their EVs after finishing the game.
