Don't worry hardcore Spidey fans, Evan Rachel Wood is not replacing Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane, Peter Parker's girlfriend. However, according to the actress herself, she's signed on to play Mary Jane in Spider-Man: The Musical, which begins rehearsals in June, 2009, and will most likely arrive on Broadway before the next big-screen sequel in early 2010.

We've known for awhile now that the musical's director, Julie Taymor, has been championing her Across the Universe stars for the lead roles in the musical. Now that Wood has nabbed the co-lead, will Jim Sturgess play Spidey? According to Wood, who spoke with IESB at a press junket for The Wrestler, they're "still trying to convince him." It's important to note that both Wood and Sturgess have workshopped the musical with Taymor recently, so chances are good both will open the show in New York. Remember, music and lyrics have been provided by U2's Bono and The Edge -- and with two pretty movie stars in the starring roles, this thing could take off. Whaddya think? Will Spidey ruin his superheroic kickass appeal by deciding to belt out a tune or three on Broadway?

I still don't quite know why I'm fascinated with this... I think I'm just...expecting something really bad or really amazing.

Reminds me of that episode of Batman Beyond where Bruce went to that humiliating Batman Musical.

Anyone else annoyed by celebrities who insist on using three names?

Eh, in her case it kinda makes sense, since "Evan" is almost always a boy's name. Evan Wood sounds like some random guy. Evan Rachel Wood sounds feminine.

Aside from that...yeah...kinda.

Maybe she likes her first name. Maybe she's named after a member of her family she wants to commemorate by continuing to use their name. Maybe she's crazy.

Whatever, I was just saying that for the heck of it anyway.

What does it matter? I think she has a really cool name, to be honest. It has a certain ring to it.

But about the musical itself? >.> I really don't know about this... making Spiderman into a musical? It really could go either way.

Ugh. . . a Spider-Man musical.

I have a terrible feeling that this is going to be unwatchable. Superhero and Musical doesn't sound like they go together.

Well, to be quite honest, Legally Blond and Musical didn't sound like they went together either, but it's a hit. Neither did Shrek and Musical, but it's apparently getting crazy reviews.
