And, if so, how did you respond?

NOTE: By "flamed", I don't mean comments meant as constructive criticism. Rather, I mean comments that, rather than pointing out where you're going wrong, are designed purely to threaten and/or insult you. For example:

THIS SUCKS!!!! YOU SUCK!!!!!!!! PLESE DELETE THIS CRAP OR I'LL BEAT U UP!!!!!!! I NO WERE U LIVE SO WATCH OUT!!!!!!

That's a hypothetical flame and any resemblence to actual flames (posted or deleted) is coincidental.

I tend to flame fics I truly see as bad. Example: "MAY DIES AT THE HANDS OF CHAINSAW WEILDING AUTHOR! ASH ONLY LUVS MISTY!"

These deserve a nice flaming.

I've been flamed a few times, but more on general topics than on a specific fic - like "Your fics are only popular because you're a mod! They put me to sleep! I could write better!" and that ilk.

Boring, stupid jealous people. People like my story, they don'T like theirs (and often with good reason), so they flame the more popular author, assuming he's cheating.

I've never actually gotten a "flame" flame.
The closest thing I've gotten to a flame is a review on FF.net saying "This is sick" or something like that about one of my stories. I also got a "Gary is gay" but I don't like Gary, so I wasn't insulted... Yeah, that's about it. I think both were for a story where I put Ash in a bikini.
I don't know, I just kind of ignore it. The people who post stuff like that usually didn't even read the fic(or the whole thing), and are just commenting because it's popular, and they can't think of anything to say.
*shrug*

I got told to "grow up and not to be so pathetic" last year just after chapter 7 of Rock-a-Bye went up. Needless to say, that seriously dented my confidence [it takes very little].

I also got told that I was sick and should rate my stories to R because I wrote slash.

Joy.

And as for what Dami says, that's one of the reasons I very rarely post my fics on message boards. Not that I'd get many comments anyway, but still.

Actually, I never have gotten a flame (which surprises me a bit, seeing as many of the authors who are better than I am have gotten a few)... The closest thing I ever got was my good IRL friend telling me that she thought a story of mine was too short. Anyway, I don't think that even close to counts.

I flamed one story, once. It was for a very, very lame Pokémon-bashing 'fic. However, the flame wasn't in caps, and I kept my spelling and grammar nice...although the person deserved a full-out flamethrower.

I take offense to MySTing being listed as a method of revenge. That's why MySTers have such a bad name, and being one myself, I have to say I have never MySTed a fic to get back at someone. I always get permission whenever possible *and if not, like a dead e-mail, post a note saying should the author read it and want it taken down, I will comply*

But yes, yes I have been flamed a LOT. Especially for a fic about Oikawa (from Digimon), where I get anon flames calling him a molester and other horrible things...

Depending on the fic, though, MSTs can and do often tend to be just plain bullyish and bitchy...

Jeesh, it's hard to believe people do that. I'm flamed so much for artwork in contrast to my writing. Although my 'The Attempt To Prevent', despite being apparently well written (it's trash, honestly it is!), had so much violence against the Legendary Pokemon that fans of them basically wanted to kill me. (Which means I'm in trouble when I finish my next Pokemon related fiction.)
Although to be honest, some writing deserves to be bashed. Especially things like parodys or those really gross hentai fanfictions people come up with. That is not writing, it's trash. And deserves to be treated like it.

I disagree. What makes your sense of judgment so superior to everyone else's? Sure, there's room for improvement everywhere and maybe especially in the genres that you cited (I don't actually read much fanfiction) but to say that it's not writing is just wrong. (Is this a flame?)

Anyway, I don't think I've been flamed. If I have, I'm oblivious enough not to know- and it's probably that I abandoned the fic before it had a chance to be flamed. :-D

I don't think I've ever been flamed. At least, not the real, true type of flame. Closest was a "You have got to be a really sick person to write that and you should be locked up Hanibal Lector style" type thing ^^ I thought it was very funny ^_^ All I'd written was a short story about a woman who'd gone crazy and killed her husband and tried to kill her daughter. I guess some people get freaked out when they read things that could, conceivably, actually happen.

There is a difference between writing and stuff that tries to proclaim itself as writing. It is the exact same with artwork. If it has no depth, no purpose, it sort of fails as a piece of literature. A good story will have a plot, or try to get the reader to laugh, or cry, et cetera. A bad story makes the person go, "Why am I reading this?!" Wrong of me to bash parodies and the other genre, but generally, most people don't write them well. Show me a good one and I'll change my mind.

A good, well-written lemon?

"The Bridal Discussion" by RiikiTikiTavi [Rurouni Kenshin] for starters.

There were a lot of good Pokémon lemons on FF.Net but they've been deleted since due to the NC-17 ban and everytime someone tries to rate it R, the soccer moms decide to kill it.

Of course if a fic is just "omg lol ahs fukd misty and cumd in hre aye lol i rite sexx!111", then yes, it is trash, but hentai as a genre is not trash if it is well written and not sex for the sake of sex.

I've never gotten flamed, at least not in the way Clare describes in the opening post. I did criticize another author for writing an inferior (IMO) sequel to a fic I liked and she blasted me via email, telling me how badly I'd hurt her feelings. A friend of hers also blasted me in her review and subsequently took me off of her favorite authors list.

Maturity.

Agatha Christie got bad reviews. Stephen King got bad reviews. If noted authors can get bad reviews, then fanfictions written by people who are halfway to getting their high school diplomas will also get bad reviews. If you write, be prepared for the fact that not everyone will like what you write. Stephen King admits in his book On Writing that getting a bad review "hurts. Oh man, does it hurt," but it certainly doesn't stop him from continuing to write.

Flaming serves no purpose other than to vent your own personal frustrations at the author. However, constructive criticism is another matter. Explaining what scene you didn't like, or how OOC one character appeared in the fic, isn't all bad. Great writers learn their craft over many years and through many good and bad reviews.

My response

As a general rule, I ignore flamers and delete their comments if it is within my power. Mostly, my attitude is that if they have to resort to such low forms of criticism, they are below my notice anyway.

In one or two cases, I have responded, either by email (when they are courageous enough to leave a real contact address) or by way of my writing. By example: On Fanfiction.net, I was being bothered and flamed by someone (who I will not name as he is a poster on this board) who had a bug up their butt about my use of non-canon moves and my generally lassez-faire attitude towards the physics and rules of the canon universe. I got so mad that I included a two-page rant on what is implied by the term 'fan fiction' in my next posting. What is gratifying is that the response to that rant was generally positive. :) The flamer even said that he generally agreed with my comments. He never reviewed one of my works again, so I guess he got my message. :p

I got flamed for my artwork, three times down at TPM. The first two for posting Valentine fan art and the third time for posting baby game character fan art. Believe it or not, this one idiot gave me nasty remarks about how he hated Valentine and all. Yes, some people even defended me and told me to ignore that brat. When I posted pics of game characters as babies, that was when the same idiot crossed the line and made a HUGE fuss over the little things like the color of the eyes and such. Thanks to him, my thread had became a flame war. What's wrong with drawing game characters as babies? I was only doing that for fun.

Fed up, I had to report to the moderator for that. I even told her and others to keep an eye on my fan art posts in case if he ever tried to ignite another flame war.

It was not until weeks later that the idiot then made a public apology after being demodded at TPM. (Well, he deserved it.) He even PMed me an apology for treating me badly. His lame reason? He liked my artwork, but he was just in a bad mood and he doesn't like babies. Man, if he was in a bad mood he shouldn't have used me or anyone else as his verbal punching bag.

I absolutely agree with you. Don't review if you can't be objective and honest. And even if being honest means telling the author that you didn't like his or her fanart or fanfics, there are tactful ways of doing so.

I've been flamed a few times, but one of them wasn't exactly a "conventianal" flame. It was a person telling me that if I didn't update one of my fics "RITE UWAY!!!!1" she was going to come to my house and murder me  . Oh yeah...she'll SURE find out how it ends THAT way...

But other than that, I usually look at what they've written and if it's bad, I leave nice, constructive reviews, despite the fact that I'm MSTing them in my mind.
