"We take time to sit down with Junichi Masuda, director of Pokemon Diamond and Pearl to discuss all things Pokemon."
Pokemon Diamond and Pearl have received huge success all over the globe. What do you think is the reasoning for this?
Masuda: Well when we are creating Diamond and Pearl we set out to make it much more user friendly. We made it easy to get into and fun to play. We also tried to make it appeal to a wider audience of players which it is doing. There are the people who own a DS and haven’t played since the originals who are getting back into it. Then there are the people who own a DS and just want a good RPG to play. The list goes on and on as to people the game appeals to.
Many of the legendary Pokemon are obtainable through events, any plans for upcoming events?
Masuda: Well we recently held the Darkrai event to coincide with the release of the new movie. I wanted to have an event to release Arceus on the Japanese New Year however I feel that would be too long to wait. We plan on holding the Arceus event on August 15th to coincide with the Bon Festival.
Why the Bon Festival?
Masuda: Well Arceus is the original Pokemon. The Bon Festival is about respecting your ancestors and I felt the two had a related theme since Arceus is an ancestor to all current pokemon.
Now that the hype of Pokemon Diamond and Pearl has subsided what’s your next plan for a game?
Masuda: Well the Diamond and Pearl hype might of subsided but not all Pokemon hype has. We’re already beginning work on the next Pokemon game.
The next pokemon game!?
Masuda: *laughs* Yes, the Pokemon games have been coming in trilogy’s so we are working on the third game in the Diamond/Pearl trilogy.
Can you tell us a bit about it?
Masuda: Well it will be titled Pokemon Jade to go with the precious gem theme of naming. We have quite a bit of new ideas in store for it.
Well you can’t leave us hanging like that, what type of new ideas!?
Masuda: First off the game will feature an all new legendary pokemon. We don’t have a name for him yet however he is a Dark/Dragon type combination and we have a rough concept art drawn for him. I told the crew to draw the art and get that the way we like it and then a name will come to us.
So if Jade is having an all new legendary how will he fit into the mythology that Diamond/Pearl introduced?
Masuda: Dialga is the being of time and Palkia is the being of space. And then we have Arceus who is the creator and original one. Arceus actually created 5 beings, 2 of which are Dialga and Palkia. The 3 other will come into play in Jade and all 3 will be obtainable.
Since Jade has all these new legendary’s how will trading with Diamond and Pearl work?
Masuda: This was an obstacle that faced us when deciding to introduce new Pokemon. We were puzzled at first as to how to do this and almost scrapped the idea of introducing the new Pokemon. However it came to us one day. We could update Diamond and Pearl through the GTS. We would add an option to the GTS menu and it would download the updated Pokedex to your game.
That means it’s possible to patch a DS game.
Masuda: Exactly. We hope this discover will cause other game producers to do the same. This could allow the DS to have endless games that have updates over time. This really excites me with Pokemon because now we could add on new areas. That is of course until we fill up all the memory the cartridge has. *laughs*
New legendary, updating old games, what else does Jade have to offer?
Masuda: Well there will be a new area that we are adding. We are adding an island that will be accessible from Canalave City. As to what is on that island, well it’ll have to wait until the game is released. *laughs*
Can you tell us when then this game will be released?
Masuda: We’d like to get it a simultaneous release in both Japan and North America sometime later this year.
Well thank you very much for your time, you gave us quite a bit to look forward to.
Masuda: The pleasure is all mine, I just hope Pokemon continues to have the success it is having right now.
Not sure if it's true or not, so can someone help?
