No, this isn't one of *those* topics. But it's something I wonder. Why is it we as anime fans fight hard against any changes made in a translation, but we as people accept and even build our lives around changes made to religious texts?
 
It's mainly because people don't know. In the case of Anime, many fans have seen the originals such are in the know. Personally, I just don't like it if someone changes it because they either want to beef up the language (like how some fansubs do) or dumb down the language (like what Viz does).
 
But we don't base our lives around what a show says, translation or original. People base their lives around faulty translations of religious texts, no matter how far removed it is from the original intent. And in this modern day with the advent of the internet, there's really no excuse for *not* knowing how much things like that have been messed with over the ages.
 
Uh...because people like to enjoy things as they originally were often...and um, like Religious Texts often affect people and aren't merely for entertainment.
 
Yeah...that's why we have those changes in Religious Texts often.
 
Simple: You often grow up with a single version of the Bible. And you're taught that IT is the right version. It's ingrained in you from a young age. And anime is something you stumble can easily gain access to the original (plus you KNOW it was originally in Japanese. I genuinely wonder how many people know the Bible wasn't originally in English).

As for WHY people get more pissed off at anime changes than religious changes? I chalk it up to people, in general, being fucking crazy.

So...if I'm reading you right, you're saying that people should change what these books say to suit their own needs? That's exactly what's been done, and why we're in such a religious mess to begin with, what with people changing what these books really say time and time again to suit whatever random purposes they had.
 
It seems to me people want to believe what they want to believe. There are those who want to believe the original Japanese animes are better than the dubbed versions. There are those who want to believe their take on religion is correct. Thus, Ann Coulter says Jews need to be "perfected".

What it all comes down to is tolerance. Fandom or religion, do we allow ourselves to get angry because somebody disagrees?
 
We shouldn't. Unfortunately, the effects of charged religious disgreements are usually much worse than fandom ones.
 
I dunno, since we Muslims believe the Quran is the same as it was 14000 years ago as we all have to memorize it, at least in part. ^^;

But I guess it's 'cause fans actually saw the original.
 
Well actually lots of people do get as upset over new translations of the Bible if they are used to older changes. The reason is close to the same one of anime, the Bible was originally written in... latin or arabic? I can't recall at the moment and I use the Oldest translation I can find because it's the closest to the original text that I have not the skill to read.

While there is the flip side, where people don't care about newer translations because they are merely understood better, (EX, the NIV bible and dubbed anime) and that is the main thing to some people, they just want the gist of it while others actually care about what is left out and cut out in the translation.

And please don't bring up a question of faith Shedinjask, your mom probably believes what she does for a good reason, just like I do, so why should you condem her? If that is your stand anyways, that you can't stand a God who condems people for certain things, then what right do you really have to demonstrate the same thing in your own person.
