I thought this deserved a thread of its own since the trailer came out. Speculation time!

I am pretty hyped for this movie. Hedwig's theme triggered so much nostalgia, and all those references to the Harry Potter series were really exciting.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is originally a textbook Harry uses at his school. This movie is about the author (Newt Scamander) of Fantastic Beasts, which can be considered a spin-off and a prequel at the same time.

1. This movie is set 70 years before the Harry Potter series. Any references/easter eggs/cameos from the original series you expect?

Dumbledore, of course, is mentioned in the trailer. There's hardly anyone else who's older than 70 in the HP series, but I'm half-expecting there to be mentions of Grindelwald somewhat. There's implications that he's heavily tied to WW2 (with his downfall being in 1945), and with this movie planning to produce 5 films, it's possible the plot can span over years from the 20s to the 40s. Also, Grindelwald is said to have been active outside of UK, so it's possible he may have been to America at some point.

2. Any magical creatures you expect to see?

Dragons, of course. Nifflers are my favorite, but I would like to see what Newt says about thestrals because despite the grim connction to deaths, they're highly useful creatures. It does imply stuff: he wrote the book after witnessing someone dying, or added the chapter of thestrals before finalizing the publication.

3. Differences of the magical society you expect to see?

We've only known the British world of magic, with some hints to other countries like Bulgaria and France depending on the book. There's bound to be differences as well in New York. It's rather interesting to think that they're showing a place and time which shouldn't be too far off from The Great Gatsby... but with MAGIC. Any possible school locations? Or how spells would have differed? Where would be the Diagon Alley of New York? Maybe they'll show up in the movie, but there's still around 6 months left till the release so why not take a guess?

You can add your own questions and personal speculations as well.

I remember getting the Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them book as a kid, (as well as Quidditch Through The Ages). You had to collect stamps out of the newspaper each day/week iirc and then when you got enough WHSmith (a book store here) gave them away. So I'm quite excited to see what the film does, because I loved reading all the little write-ups for the beasts in the book. Though I must say I'm less enthused with Harry Potter the last few years, I guess because there hasn't been anything new film or book wise, so this might just reignite the... magic for me (d'oh for puns).

Aye, my expectations came true.

GRINDELWALD IS IN THE MOVIE!!

Wow, more Harry Potter connections!! Since this is a trilogy, I have high hopes they might include that legendary duel at some point. (Dumbledore vs Grindelwald) It was only mentioned in the books, but never shown. I'm glad we might be getting more backstory of the wizarding world during Grindelwald's time.

GRINDELWALD IS IN THE MOVIE!!
Is it true that he's being played by Johnny Depp?

Also, as someone who was a big fan of the original Harry Potter books and movies, I'm very excited for this series. Its gonna be great getting to get to know Newt Scamander, all these magical creatures, see/hear about bits of Grindewald and Dumbledore's past on the big screen, and see more of the wizarding world.

Also, I heard the second one will be in France, so maybe we'll get to see Beauxbaton's Academy.

The good news:

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is going to span over 20 years within the screen, produce 5 movies, and include Dumbledore. The second movie is coming out in 2018.

I heard that they're planning to end the series around 1945 - the exact year of Grindelwald's fall. The year of the legendary duel between him and Dumbledore.

From what's mentioned about the future movies, they're probably focusing on Newt Scamander alright, but it looks like they're going to tell the tale of Grindelwald's terrors with Newt in the midst of the dark ages. Cool :)

This was definitely an amazing treat. So many references to the Harry Potter series, so many shared concepts, and battle scenes... :D I'm just glad that the tales of the wizarding world is expanded to the years prior to the Harry Potter plot.

Anyways, if you've been away from the Harry Potter fandom (or the books in general) for a long time, I suggest reading books 5 and 7 (Order of the Phoenix and Deathly Hallows) just in case. There are certain references worth noticing, and it's exciting to catch the references. The spin-off book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them itself doesn't have much to do with the movie (it's a textbook about magical creatures after all), but I recommend reading the first few introductory chapters if you want to learn more about Newt Scamander. None of these are really necessary, but again, REFERENCES :D

I do have a few questions about the movie, though. Major spoilers.

1. The possession of the Elder Wand
From what we know in the 7th Harry Potter book, Grindelwald had stolen the Elder Wand when he was a young man, but the Grindelwald in this movie is approximately in his 40s. Exactly when Grindelwald had stolen the Elder Wand, the year isn't dated, but it must be before he started terrorizing Europe. But then near the end of this movie, Tina took his wand. As the wand itself looks nothing like the Elder Wand, it's highly likely Grindelwald had been using other wands in disguise. Yet if wands are taken, the right to possess the wand is also taken. So, does this mean Tina was a temporary master of the Elder Wand? There are 4 more movies to come, so I guess Grindelwald winning back the possession would be likely.

2. Ariana Dumbledore
Grindelwald expressed grief and frustration over children having to restrain their magic, eventually dying from Obscurus. Could it possibly be that Ariana Dumbledore had been a host of Obscurus? Aberforth says that muggle kids had bullied her into insanity, but there's a chance that restraining her in the house for long periods of time actually made it worse.

3. Modesty
Witch, or not? Grindelwald mistook Credence for a Squib, but I doubt he'd mistake a muggle for a witch restraining her powers. Then again, Credence's power was let loose at the time, so she probably was just within range of magical influence.

I screwed up trying to get up early so I could see it before work (our local theater on Tuesdays has showings for $5, $6 for 3D), so I decided I'll skip it (I usually prefer to see it the following Tuesday after release so there's people in the audience. Don't want to feel like I wasted my money, like how I was the only one to see the previous SpongeBob movie, or Kubo...and I was the only one in it).

I might go and see it next week at the cinemas. And Channel 9 here in Australia is in the process of airing all eight of the Harry Potter films (or is it on 9Go!, I'm not sure). I hope it is good (I'm also planning to see the new Star Wars film next month, but that is a different story)

Well, I FINALLY managed to go see it last Tuesday (surprisingly, the "SuperScreen" area of the theater, with louder audio and recliners...normally it's like $10 for a ticket to those showings, but they're still $5 on Tuesdays). The plot confused me somewhat, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. I also nabbed a Tina Goldstein fun pack for Lego Dimensions, though I didn't play as her until I saw the movie, to avoid early spoilers. I think I may make her a replacement for Gandalf since she has most of his skills, and more.

I loved the movie. I was lucky enough to view it in an IMAX theater, but I've admittedly forgotten a lot about the original Harry Potter books/movies. I don't even remember Grindelwald's role in them, so I'll have to reread.
Jacob Kowalski was one of my favorite characters in the movie. He even has my first name!

I saw the movie and it was very good. I am looking forward to the sequel.
