Throughout the entirety of the Pokemon anime, the show has been, barring some exceptions (like Origins and the Victini movies, which was co-produced/animated by Production I.G. and Xebec), animated by OLM. It has been what put them on the map, their cash cow, whatever you wanna call it.

However, there have been also different animation teams or divisions inside of OLM that have been handling Pokemon on and off throughout it's different generations, including specials, including Team Ota, Team Iguchi and Team Kato for the main TV series. As well as Team Koitabashi for all of the movies and some specials up until the Diancie movie, which was animated by Team Kamei.

Which leads me to my question, what is your favorite animation team that has worked on Pokemon up to this point?

For me, it would definitely has to be Team Kato for the current XY series. They've really upped their game since taking over near the end of DP, and now the animation actually looks like something I can be invested in watching even more than before. Whether it was a change in animators, animation producers/directors, a budget increase, or all three, the Pokemon anime has never looked as good as it did now, barring movies and certain specials, of course.

I'm also fond of the OLM/I.G./Xebec team-up with the Victini movies--it looked more vibrant and fluid than any Pokemon movie that came out up to that point, and even since, to a degree. Also Origins episode four, but that goes without saying, heh-heh.

While I kinda realize that a question like this might not matter, since from what I can tell with anime production, it mostly relies on the time crunch between when the episode is conceptualized and produced to meet deadlines, and who's the animation director/producer, I just wanted spit out some questions, as I'm very interested in animation in general and I've never heard anyone ask something like this before. Call it curiosity, I guess, heh-heh.

Also if I'm wrong with any of what I said before, particularly in the last paragraph, please let me know. I'm just spitballing and paraphrasing from what I heard other sources, so I would appreciate any corrections.

Quick bump before this thread gets lost in the archives. Kinda interested in hearing you guys thoughts and opinions. :p

1. Kamei
2. Production I.G. and Xebec
3. Kato
4. Koitabashi
5. OLM/OLM Digital
6. Ota
7. Iguchi

If you need any reasons, just ask.

That's a rather interesting list ya got! :D

Any particular reasons why the first four on your list are in that order, particularity Kamei and Koitabashi? I can understand why Teams Ota and Iguchi are at the bottom of the list, given their episodes of AG and DP were...pretty meh, animation-wise.

I'm just slightly surprised Koitabashi wasn't given a higher placing on your list, was all.

Kamei...the introduction to M17 says it all. That CGI, shadows, and lighting ;) Also, do you know if they animated M18?

Koitabashi is good, it's just that it's outshone by the more recent animation teams, and their animation hasn't aged well in comparison. Take a look at some of the cheesy special effects with Mewtwo or Deoxys's attacks from their respective movies. I don't know if this was the storyboard artists or the animation team, but I also didn't like how they still cel-painted, rather than digitally colored, the AG movies even though the main series has long gone digital by this point. Don't get me wrong, it looked good, but outdated. They did get better M10 and on, which is why I still like them (along with some still impressive animation in the previous movies). M15 is a good example, with the grass rustling effects as Keldeo runs through it. And the first five movies' CGI was really good for its time. TL;DR: Good, but their successors make their animation look obsolete.
