Please note this thread will feature open discussion about unrevealed megas, including those intrinsic to the main story.

So the base game of Pokémon Legends Z-A has graced us with 26 (24 available atm, with Delphox and Chesnaught being distributed at a later date) new Mega Evolutions. Do you have any new favorites? Have you had the opportunity to use them in your playthrough?

I'll be honest, the megas felt sorta hit or miss this time (though I wasn't really crazy about the concept of megas in the first place), but there's still a fair bit here I really vibe with:

  • Scolipede - In terms of pure design, this is the big standout to me. The armor gives it like feudal Japan horse armor energy and the added blues are very striking. I went out of my way to grab a Venipede for my playthrough because of it.
  • Excadrill - Another visualy striking one. And it's for a mon I didn't initially care about. Also like, it's stupid powerful too. What I initially recruited to help me cover one of the rogues ended up being like the mvp of my team both in the main story and the online battle club. Definitely gives me a whole new appreciation for Excadrill
  • Froslass - This one is really majestic and i love how towering it feels compared to most other megas. I really wish I was able to use it, but I didn't get a dawn stone til late game, when I ultimately already basically had my final team set.
  • Starmie - Definitely one of the more controversial ones, and I totally understand that. I struggle to say it's an objectively good design, but I love it. It's so stupid yet equally terrifying (particularly with that (story) run in the rogue fight). Starmie is already a mon I really liked, so I liked he got something extra here, even if it's objectively maybe lazy compared to other megas.
  • Drampa - They made him youthful again, and i think that's funny. The black color scheme, viking horns and storm clouds and the complete opposite energy of it being menacing is neat too. It and the original form basically tell the story of a menacing warrior mostly mellowing out with age.
  • Delphox - I admittedly can't judge it in game yet but in terms of pure visuals of what we've seen, I think it's great! It feels more complete and satisfactory compared to the base form and explicitly more witch-like. I think the added purples do a lot too.
  • Greninja - Much like Delphox, this definitely helps make the ninja characteristics nore obvious, and the giant shuriken is bad ass. I wouldn't say it's better than the base form (Greninja is one of my like... all time favs), but I still really like this mega and am pretty satsified with it.

I still haven’t actually seen them all yet (I think?) just generally and I certainly haven’t seen them all in-game so this list could change once I’ve gotten to experience them all properly in motion and whatnot but….

I think so far my favorites are….

Mega Eelektross and Mega Skarmory (top tier)
Mega Drampa and Mega Starmie
Mega Hawlucha and Mega Excadrill

Mega Meganium, Mega Raichu Y and Mega Dragonite are my favourites.

I really don't think there's a new mega that I really dislike! They all run the gamut of cool/funny/weird. I guess I couple stand out to me more then others though:

Mega Feraligatr is so charming with its silly helmet that makes it look like a giant Totodile. Definitely not what I was expecting. Probably better then what I was expecting.

Mega Starmie clears ngl. I blacked out during its Rogue ME fight and didn't even care because I was having so much fun fighting it. The fact that its both a Tokusatsu and Earthbound reference is neat!!

Mega Clefable is really cute and reminds me a lot of Pompompurin. I'm so glad they keep giving my faves megas lol. I really wanted to use one on my team, but I don't think it was catchable until late game. :c

Mega Barbaracle is an Evil Intimidating Horse (affectionately.) Like Mega Starmie, I think this one is also a Tokusatsu reference that's flying over my head lol. It gets an honorable mention for being the one Rogue ME that I completely underestimated. (wdym its Rock/Fighting??? lida LIDA.)

I haven't seen them all in-game yet (I have seen leaked images though, some of them I just haven't looked at closer). No one in particular stands out as a favorite but there's a lot of them I like. Mega Hawlucha is awesome. I've loved it from the moment it was revealed and I still love it. Idk why I don't even care about wrestling I just love the big bird. Mega Delphox is also awesome. Adding in more of that black accent color really helps Delphox's other colors pop, and I really like how dynamic the dsign is. If it wasn't locked behind the online ranked system I would have used it on my team. Mega Dragonite is really cool. I've liked it form the beginning but I think it's shiny is what brought it over the top for me. That blue just works so well with it. And finally Mega Froslass. This thing looks so cool, so elegant and ethereal looking. I didn't use one for my team because I think I've used Froslass relatively recently and I've wanted to use a Chandelure for years. I might train her up in post-game and swap her in with someone for the Mega Dimensions DLC.

I simply love Mega Greninja & Mega Froslass.

Picking out my favorite from this batch might've actually been somewhat of a struggle if it weren't for him

I would also prefer to rank all the new megas via a tier list, although without an image and I explain my reasons.
The only one I don’t like:

Mega Starmie - And to be fair, I don’t hate it. In fact, coming straight off the part in the game where I fight the rogue version of it, I think it’s movements are hilarious, and overall just seeing it run around was just so amusing.
But in all seriousness, it commits a massive problem: being a design I can’t take seriously. And most importantly, I don’t like how it doesn’t fit Starmie‘s theme. There are many ways they could have made a cool space starfish thing, why make it the same thing but with longer legs? And that’s another problem I have with the design, it’s just simply the same thing but with legs stretched, really uncreative. I mean, it is an amusing design that would probably make great memes, but I still acknowledge that this design… just doesn’t work.

Meh tier:

Mega Froslass - Wow, the exact same thing except it’s longer. How original. I know some megas are somewhat simple designs but this… is too simple. I understand the appeal, but this design just isn’t for me.

Mega Victoreebel - What I said about the new Starmie applies here too, but at least this one feels fitting on the original mon. I also think it’s strage how big it is. Overall, not much to say other than I think it could have been better, much like the other two mons I’ve said so far.

Mega Feraligatr - I mean I’m definitely growing on this, but I really do feel it could have been so much more. Howabout gaining a massive jaw to destroy more stuff or being more dragon-like? But no it gets a weird hood that looks more like a toilet seat than anything and it can’t use it’s arms if it wanted to bite things. Again, it’s not bad or anything, it just… could have been much better with another idea.

Mega Malamar - I’m starting to get tired of mons or forms of mons that are just ‘the same thing but tall’. It wasn’t bad at first but now it’s ridiculous because so many mons like the new megas for Starmie, Froslass, and this are all ‘longer’ versions even though it makes little sense for any of them.

Good:

Mega Clefable - Well okay this is more mixed but more on the good side. Those wings and hat are… interesting.

Mega Dragonite - One of the first revealed megas and I think it’s… fine. It could have been better but also much worse.

Mega Meganium - I’m just glad this one wasn’t disappointing. I know it’s similar but with more flowers but I do think it’s quite good overall.

Mega Pyroar - I saw some people bashing this design, but I dunno, I think it’s quite solid, even if somewhat simple.

Mega Excadrill - Now that is a massive drill. Same rating as above, really good design even if it would have been better of more stuff changed.

Mega Scolipede - Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t think this is bad at all, but that armor just seems… a bit clunky on that design, and while it looks awesome, it also looks kind of weird too. But I do kind of like this overall.

Great:

Gen6 starter megas - Overall I’m satified with what this group got. No massive explanation or anything, I think these are neat designs all in all.

Mega Zygarde - Now that is a massive design and… not much else for me to say here.

Mega Emboar - Definitely the best of the actual game’s starters, too bad it’s on someone I didn’t want to pick. The staff looks excellent and the changes to the actual design are very well done.

Mega Barbaracle - Didn’t expect a mon like this to get a mega, but I’m glad it’s one of the better looking ones.

Mega Scrafty - I like it’s hood.

Mega Falinks - Interesting formation.

Mega Drampa, Chandelure, and Hawlucha - Very excellent designs on all three of them.

Top tier:

Mega Skarmory - Thanks to a nuzlocke ruleset I did, I happened to know what this design is based off. And all in all, it’s still an excellent design with an excellent colour scheme.

Mega Eelektross - While it might change over time, this is currently my favourite new mega. Everything in this design flows together very well and it really does bring out the design excellently.

Overall, to answer the thread’s question, my favourite megas are the ones for Hawlucha, Chandelure, Skarmory, and Eelektross, with the last one being very easily my absolute favourite of the new megas.

Maybe dragonite? Mega meganium feels a liiittle bland, but I do appreciate the typing. Drampa and dragalgae are really cool.

Emboar, both of Raichu's, Dragonite, Drampa, and Scrafty are my favorites personally.

Barbaracle's I really dislike the most; never liked it or its pre-evo, and I really don't like barnacles in general. Starmie's also just really unnerves me, so that's another one that's a major miss for me. The rest are just meh for me, no real strong feelings for them.

this is probably the same tierlist yung dramps used; i just clicked on the first one that i saw lmao

Hawlucha, Victreebel and Falinks are so OP! :PRS:

it's gotta be Mega Hawlucha. they turned him into goddamn Ultimo Dragon, man, you can't beat that. Mega Froslass and Mega Scrafty are absolutely worthy silver and bronze medalists, too.

shame about that speed stat on Mega Scolipede, though. might as well ship him off to Alola.
