Of the first five Japanese Pocket Monsters movies, which one do you think had the best orginal score. Keep in mind that if you've only seen the Dub versions, you might not be familiar with the music from the first three movies, since the original score was replaced when they were brought overseas. Although, the music from the first movie was heavily kept in the series Dub during the first few seasons.

While I personally think all the movies have outstanding music, my first choice would definately be the second movie, Revelation Lugia. It had same of the strongest and most moving music of of the five movies in question IMO. A few of the instrumental BGM tunes are on CD, but most are no wher to be found unless you watched the original movie or the Japanese episodes (the BGM from movie 2 only started getting inserted into the regular series by episode 186, well past the time when the Dub started replacing most original tunes).

Some of my favorites from that movie included:

A well composed remix of the RBY surfing theme,

The tunes used when Misty, Tracey, and Melody pursue Ash across the see,

The tune used when Ash and co. escape from the flying ship (it was actually kept in the Dub in Battle Frontier episode Going for Choke when Banette starts using frustration,

The tune used when Lugia appears and engages with the other three legendary birds,

The music that plays when Ash and his Pokemon set off to retrieve the final orb, and later with the help of Team Rocket,

The dramatic piece that place when Misty saves Ash from drowning, up until the point when ash puts the final orb in place (Note: many have previously noted this tune for it's usage in the flashback scene in the original versions of episode 275 during the flashback scene, and in AG6 when Jessie and James say their goodbyes to Arbok and Weezing, though I don't think anyone has ever mentioned that the tune originally came from Revelation Lugia),

And the piece used at the very end just before Toi et Moi and the credits.

BTW, none of the above mentioned tunes are on any CD AFAIK.

Hmm...

Out of the first 5 Japanese soundtracks, I guess I'll have to go with the soundtrack for Pokemon Heroes: Latios and Latias. They kept some of the music in that movie, right? ^^;

And you're definitely right about that. Since I've never seen the Japanese version of the movies, I have not heard any of those soundtracks before (except for the First Movie BGM which was kept in the first few seasons - I didn't know that, by the way).

Heh, if you had said "Out of all the movies, what was your favorite Japanese soundtrack?", I would've said the one from the 8th movie. That music was so beautiful! And I'm so glad they kept every bit of it in the dub! :)

I have never seen the original Japanese versions of the movies either but that aside, I really liked the soundtrack for the second movie. It had some great instrumental songs and the pop tunes found on the English soundtrack CD are in my mind at least great. It is good that the original five movies were used in this poll since those are the only ones I have seen and don't have any plans to watch the other five either.

"Revelation Lugia" followed by "Celebi: A Timeless Encounter" (which I hated as a movie, by the way).

I know you have your reasons, nickstr, and I understand how you feel. But still, I say you should at least give it a try and watch the 8th movie.

Wow, this is a hard choice. I actually haven't listened to those soundtracks in a while. I remember liking the First and the Second a lot, Then I liked the third too... The American one actually more than the Japanese one for what I can remember, but I still think I favored the 5th the most for it's original sound. We also got 3 vocal songs, lol. I guess it had "Tommy February" though, I didn't like her song that much. (I still consider "Tommy February" Tomoko Kawase's Bijork phase...)

I still like the 5ths sound track the most though.. but still, I liked the first, second, and third's a lot too. I remember the 5th's as the most memorable for me.

yea i havent seen the Japanese versions either....xcept for the 4th one...but i didnt vote for it anyways so it doesnt matter. so my opinions are based on the american versions.

To me, the third movie had the most moving melody lines to accompany the scenes. I especially loved the choice of instruments used in the songs in the background. As one of the main reasons why I loved the 3rd movie the most, the BGM kept me so focused on the movie. Every accent and cymbal crash was perfectly coordinated and in-sync with all of Entei's jumps and leaps. And the scenes where Molly talks to her Dad, Molly talks to Delia before her battle with Misty, and when Entei fades away. I love the BGM for this movie so much that i have everytune memorized in my head lol. so thats why i chose the 3rd movie.

i also liked the 5th movie's BGM.....thats what i would have voted for a second place. they were great, and matched the scenes well too
