Favourite Game Genre(s)

JRPGs are my absolute favorites. Especially when they are turn-based, but I slowly warmed up to the more action-oriented ones too (thanks, Kingdom Hearts). I like the style of story and characters that these games tend to have, and I like the character designs WAY more than the more realistic looks a lot of western RPGs have. The great music in a lot of JRPGs also helps.

Others I like are fighting games (not particularly great at them, but I do enjoy some Tekken, Soulcalibur, etc), some platformers (the non-Galaxy 3D Mario games + many of the 2D Marios, Sonic the Hedgehog which is one of my favorite franchises), "Metroidvania" style stuff like Castlevania starting with SotN, rhythm games, and in general stuff that is story-oriented, like Mafia II and L.A. Noire are.

I'd say simulation games, but I really only play The Sims and some of the old Tycoon games in that category, so I dunno if that counts.

Some sports games are all right... by which I mean the Mario ones lol. I LOVE Mario Golf. Tennis is good too, a bit spotty in quality post-N64 though. The baseball Mario games were fun too.

Pokemon is really the only game of its kind that I play.
Adventure games on PC are a mainstay of mine. Sierra games like King's Quest and Space Quest. Also Zork Nemesis is a somewhat random standout favourite.
Platformers are good, Rayman and Rayman 2 are favourite games on the PC of that genre.
Many other platformers on Gameboy - mostly Wario games really.
I like puzzle games in general, too. I like games in which you roll a ball around as if it's one of those tilting mazes. There's a great open source one called Neverball and an associated golf game Neverputt that I got particularly obsessed with.
And then there's Spider Solitaire, of course. :giggle:

Platformers are my favorites. I find them really enjoyable. Run, jump, dodge, collect items, beat a boss. Next level.

Action-Adventure is another one I enjoy, but lately newer games have been nothing but a bunch of Zelda clones and I find less joy in them.

Of course there is that one RPG that is my favorite game series of all time, what is it called... Pogerminz? The one this forum is dedicated to? Something like that. :ROFLMAO:

Puzzle games are a fun way to pass the time. I think they're great.

RPG's in general is a genre I favor the most, with my three favorites being FE, FF, and Pokémon. KH, Fallout, and Diablo (and some others) are up there too in my favs.

Racing, puzzle, fighting, rhythm, platformers, and a few visual novels are fun genres I like as well.

I find that a lot of my favorite games happen to be RPGs, namely JRPGs. Many of the ones I played just have complex, riveting stories and awesome characters I really cared about. Plus, most of them have absolutely amazing soundtracks. I still listen to the Mana series' OSTs and various Tales OSTs, so do I need to elaborate further?

I do like a few platformers (Kirby), puzzle games (Pokemon Puzzle Challenge. It's a surprisingly good outlet for when I'm angry), visual novels (Only good ones like Clannad, Katawa Shoujo, Harmonia, and some indie ones I know of like Doki Doki Literature Club, Cute Demon Crashers, Little Lily Princess, etc.), and simulators (Harvest Moon, Story of Seasons, Stardew Valley). It really depends on the content of the game and whether I like it or not. I didn't like Kirby's Dream Land (The very first one for the GameBoy) because it was too short and too easy, but I absolutely love Tales of Zestiria, widely considered one of the worst Tales game ever, even though I'm aware of its many flaws, because something about it just resonated me, and the characters were all so charming to me (Except Dezel).

I've played games of all genres, but the ones I tend to return to the most are action/adventure games (with or without RPG elements).

FPS was fun in its early days, but now they are just all the same -- if you played one, you've played 'em all.

I'm a big fan of platformers. Suck at them, though. Leaping off every available surface is a national past time in my house and 'coordination' is a concept that is quite foreign to my brain. Did I mention its also xenophobic towards the idea of learning what my buttons do? Well it is. My brain is a bigot.

Open-world adventure games make the top of the list. Beyond Good and Evil, Zelda, Ratchet & Clank - that sort of thing. I love them.

Hack & slash, certainly. Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors and Orochi and all that junk are pretty much woven into my gaming history. And fighters like Smash Bros. I hit those buttons harder than a stormtrooper on the forest moon of Endor. And racing games because apparently crashing and burning in real life is not enough for me. Brilliant. High velocity is bloody fun.

Uhhh...did you highlight those and put in that gif as a compliment or as an insult?

Hilarious joke. It was too perfect, really. But never an insult on any serious degree - I dig Harvest Moon, actually. Finding a spouse is a lot of the fun/godless torture, and as a kid I enjoyed myself for ages on Magical Melodies. Married Gwen.
But then I was traumitized.
Danny, my farmer, had a dream where my precious cow died and by the time I realized it wasn't real I was a broken soul. So now I don't play them much. Can't fit it in between my therapy appointments.

RPGs and JRPGs, primarily. To start with, they're time sinks mostly due to level-grinding but that's what I appreciate; I love having a sense of progression based on what level I'm on, and having room to grow even more powerful. It's why FFX will always be one of my favourite games; the Sphere Grid provides an actual sense of progression as you grind more and more, so you actually gradually get stronger along the way. It feels seriously amazing when you overlevel to a point where you're easily able to dispatch bosses that would've been difficult if you hadn't take extra time to level grind and all that.

Aside from that, I've always loved how story-focused most JRPGs are. It allowed me to get to know each character individually and even get attached to them. The Tales series is a good example of this, I think. Although I'm thinking of Berseria as an example, I love how each characters has depth and purpose for being there and no one is really... boring, so to speak, thus making everyone really blend together well as a party.

Life simulation (like The Sims and Animal Crossing) and open-world adventure (like Breath of the Wild).
