I like Gold best. He has the coolest look, was the first protagonist I ever played as, stars in the best games, has the coolest rival, and gets twice as many badges as the others.

I think Red is the coolest, but Brendan is a close Second. I like all of them but Lucas a lot. He's just so plain looking and boring.

Which one is best?
Red, Red and RED. The Original Hero of Generation I. He's just epic win in so many ways.

Which one looks coolest?
Red. He just does. The other outfits are nice, but seriously, Red's wardrobe just makes him look seriously awesome, with the collar up, and his signature hat pose which Black stole.

Red! I like silent protagonists! The back sprite from R/B/Y makes him look like Mario with a backpack plus he just looks so badass

To me there is no other character better than Red, he's the first one I remember playing as when I was a kid and he's just plain better than the rest (male and female).

Gold - Kind of childish with the the backwards cap and shorts.
Brendan - Kind of effeminate (well more so when one has read Pokemon Special)
Lucas - Never played the other Gen IV game but he just looks like a boring, sleepy, plain rip-off of Red
Black - Looks as if Game Freak is trying a little to hard to make the character look cool for the kids (just my opinion).

So yeah, Red is still #1.

Just a passing wish, but once they stop making new generations and finish adding new pokemon and regions, Game Freak or some other company should make a game allowing travel and capture of all the regions and pokemon...starring as Red of course through the whole thing.

Lucas. Red comes a close second
I like Lucas' design, and he was the first player character I played as.

Lucas > Red > Ethan = Black > Brendan.

For some reason I really dislike Lucas, and Brendan is weird looking. Red looks awesome of courese, but I have to go with Ethan. It's really close between Red and Ethan though.

i'm not really seeing what's so "gay-looking" or "effeminate" about him? he just looks like a regular kid with some pretty bitchin' clothes to me :T

Eh, I'm a Lucas fan, though I wouldn't mind him ditching the hat thing he wears. Black is working his way up to my favorite, and will probably overtake Lucas when I can play the Gen V games. As for the others, they are okay, but I'm not the biggest fan of their designs.

people usually like female characters more but i like the male characters.

Each of them have something good about them.

Red:Serious, cool and silent., love him.

Gold:cute, different.He was not trying to look like a rip-off of Red meaning totally original.

Bendan:Again cute, loved his outfit and totally different and i request the thread maker to change the rude comment about him.

Lucas:adorable, loved the scarf, the cute hat and that goofy look on his face.

Black:love his hair, he is very cool looking too.

Red and Brendan are my favorites. Red was the coolest looking and I think Brendan had the most creative character design (hathairthingy)

Anyway, I say Ethan is the coolest design wise. And overall? Ethan. He's the only protagonist who canonly beat ANOTHER protagonist, who just happened to be one of the strongest trainers in the franchise.
